1 JULY 2011 From the President s Saddlebag Hi All, June is about gone but not forgotten. We cleared Marie Creek and had two other work parties. One at English Point and another at Canfield Mountain. Also, we made sure the trails were clean at 4 th of July Pass. I use the term we rather loosely since the only one I worked on was the clearing of Marie Creek. Thank you to all who stepped up and took part. Those who rode Marie Creek with Dave and Marilyn got a little damp, but it was a good ride. I just talked to Joni and she had 43 RSVP for the 4 th of July Pass ride on the 25th. It looks like better weather and maybe summer is here for a while. Please don't forget about the pot luck in the park before the July Meeting. Bring an appetite and something to share. Also the BBQ will be going for meat if you wish. Bob and Linda Wuest are sharing the video "Road to the Horse" in segments and boy is it worth staying and watching. Plan on the big event on the weekend of July 16 th for Marion. She needs our support. And the working, fun weekend at Red Ives is the following weekend. 2 2 - JULY 2011 PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMEN MAY 21, 2011 MINUTES President Bob Williams called the meeting to order at 7:05PM Guests: Scott Meer and New Member Kathy Beck May minutes were read, corrected and are now part of the record. WORK PROJECTS - English Point - Karen Kimball reported that the hitching rails were put up at with the help of Bill Clarke with his tractor and auger, Bob Funke who did the welding, Tom Knoll and Les Erickson. Karen took pictures. Trailer Parking signs were passed on as the area is large enough for small group usage. Canfield Mtn - On June 4th Karen Kimball, Bill Clarke, TJ Anderson (Karen's grandson) and Rusty Bailey, a mountain biker, put up a horse gate provided by the FS. They all installed a Kiosk that Rusty built with the Bicycle poster. Ken Eagleston of the CDA bike shop will also be putting a Kiosk up at 4th of July Pass Rec. Area to educate bikers. Marie Creek - it was muddy where you start up the western slope. Karen talked w/fs about creating a thoroughfare there. Maybe we could get help from hikers and the Boy Scouts. Putting down gravel with a motorized wheelbarrow use cargo bags and haul in by horse. This would take 2-3 years. FS should supple gravel and may have an engineer look at. Karen will pursue this with the FS. On Memorial weekend 12 people showed up for trail clearing, the Shriners, Smiths, McCollys, Funkes, Kimballs, and Bob Williams and his granddaughter. MARIAN CRUMB FUND RAISER - Karen Kimball reported that Marian lost her house due to a bad family investment. The court gave her 2 days to move out, so the 4h helped her move, her horses are at the fairgrounds and a construction company came in and dug up all her footing and put it into storage. Some friends are getting her a new place. They are going to buy it and let Marian live and set up there at no cost. There will be an auction and dinner fund raiser on Friday, July 15th. RED IVES - Karen made a motion to move Red Ives to the weekend of July 23rd-24th so we can attend the Marion Crumb fundraiser, Bill Clarke 2nd, motion passed. There will be trail cleaning, nipping on Simpson Ridge. Jerry Shriner said that he, George Miller, Bob Williams, Tom Knoll and Les Erickson will be hauling 20 bales up to Ruby Creek. Karen had a sign up sheet passed around asking who wants to work on trails or assist Jerry. The hauling of hay into Mallard-Larkins will not be happening. BE BEAR AWARE - Joyce Bissell reported that she and Angie went to Como Lake, MT for 7 days. While there they me a guy from the Bitterroot BCH who does Be Bear Aware Training, such as spray a wall of Bear Spray around yourself, not just spray at the bear. Joyce gave his name and # to Terry Sverdsten who will follow up on seeing if we can get him to come over. If so, we should advertise in the NicklesWorth and open it to the public. The horse camp at Como Lake was built by horsemen who brought in the heavy equipment and all the materials and the FS is letting the boaters take it over. HAYBURN PARK - Diane Shriner reported that she and Jerry were down there last weekend and it is really nice. The lower parking lot has been smoother out, the outhouse is working, there are 3 new hitch rails and the trail has been rerouted. The upper lot is blocked. 4th of JULY PASS FUN RIDE & MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - Joni Lueck reported that while clearing the trail last week she broke her foot. Please RSVP for lunch. She's gotten a lot of calls from single inexperienced riders. Need lead and drag riders for the two groups. Marilyn said she'd lead. There will be additional trail clearing on the 19th. 4th of JULY PASS CLEARING - June 19th Angie Bissell and Bill Clarke will be doing the outhouse doors, clearing the brush around the creek at the trail head and cutting out a big log in the tunnel. MARIE CREEK WEED SPRAYING - Bonnie Thompson said that the weeds aren't up yet, so the June 20th spraying has been put off until July 11th. FUNDRAISER - Lea Williams needs the donations ASAP. Please bring to the July meeting. The baskets will be assembled in August. Diane Shriner will go to D&B, Ashlin Finch and Terri Horton. Karen Kimball will go to Hickman's, Cenex, Chelle Caruso, and Les Schwab. Bob Williams will go to Indiana Harness, Will Rodgers, Ashlin Finch and other WA stores. We will need to set up tables and such the day before and at 7:00 am the day of. If you want to stay overnight you'll have to make arrangements with the park. Can't sell anything in the park but you can have a display. EQUINE HERPES - Bob Williams said that McKinlay and Peters are open again. The virus has pretty much run its course. It is still advisable not to use common water. Also you will need to carry a current health certificate with you in WA showing that your horse has been tested for herpes. It's about an 11 mile loop and there may be small logs to step over. Debbie Stanley won the drawing for the Progressive Pot. There were 28 members present. The July Regular Meeting will be our Annual BBQ & Pot Luck, held at the park next to the Dalton Gardens City Hall. The grill will be fired up, so bring your own meat to BBQ and a side dish. 5 PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN JULY CANFIELD MTN. FUN RIDE I will lead a ride up Canfield Mt on July 16th. Be ready to ride by 9:30. Bring a lunch, we'll ride to the top and have lunch and back on the same trail. It's a beautiful view. Horses should have shoes and trail is not for real green or out of shape stock. Dalton Arena is in Dalton Gardens on 16th Street 1/2 block north of the corner of 16th and Wilbur. Arena is on the East side of the road. We can park there. Please no dogs. This is a members only ride. Questions: call Karen Kimball ST JOE WORK PROJECT AT RED IVES 22nd 24th Saturday & Sunday The date for this work project has been changed because of the fundraiser for Marian Crumb which is July 15th. Several of us wanted to take part in this. This is a great work party to go on and a chance to see beautiful country and have fun around the camp fire. We do need help with clearing trails and some of the guys are packing in hay about 5 mi for the forest service. It you are interested in doing this give Jerry Shriner a call at Everyone will be camping at the Red Ives corrals. Jim and I are going up on Thursday, July 21, clearing some trails on Friday and Saturday. Saturday we will be clearing a trail of logs and brush. I will bring the nippers that the club has. We might do a short ride on Sunday and then home. Friday night bring your own hamburger if you would like. We'll have the grill going. We'll have all the trimmings. Saturday morning breakfast is on your own so we can get an early start. Saturday night is potluck. Bring your own meat and a dish if you would like to share. We never go hungry. Sunday morning breakfast is on the club. It'll be all provided. Do your own lunch on the trail. "Please no dogs on the trails and they need to be at campers during meals". If you can make this work project RSVP to Karen Kimball at or jkkimball01@gmail.com DIRECTIONS: Red Ives is on the upper part of the St Joe River above the town of Avery. A sure fire way to get there is take I-90 to the Hwy 3/Rose Lake exit #34, go south to St Maries. At about 22 miles there is a stop sign/light at the Hwy 3/Hwy 97 Harrison "Y". From there go about miles, at the 35 Miles speed sign and Avery/Calder sign, take a left onto St Joe River Road (NF-50). It's about 90 miles from St Maries to Red Ives all on paved roads. Approximately at the 73 mile marker there s a bridge on the right to Red Ives that crosses Gold Creek. Look for one of our red and white PBCH arrow signs. The last 10 miles is paved, but narrow with few turnouts, so take it slow and carefully. Again, look for one our red and white PBCH arrow signs at the Red Ives Historic Ranger Station directing you across the bridge to the camping area.

6 6 - JULY 2011 PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN WORK, WORK and MORE WORK by Karen Kimball On May 27th Bob and Linda Funke and myself went to the top of Canfield, or sometimes called the Bud Howard Trail, and Bob cut out all the logs. It was a rainy day so no pictures. We just went up and back. On Memorial Day, May 30th, 12 people went up to Marie creek and cut out all the logs. Bob and Linda Funke, Bob Williams and grand daughter took the upper trail. Carla & Tom McColly, Diane & Jerry Shriner, Stan & Jamie Smith and Jim & myself went on the bottom. We meet half way up at the top and had lunch then all road down to the bottom and out. Was a beautiful day except going out we got a few sprinkles of rain. It was nice out at the trail head so had our wine tasting with cheese and crackers. 7 PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN JULY On June 4th we installed the 2 hitching posts at English Point. Bill Clarke brought his tracker with auger and dug the holes to place the hitching post in them. Bob Funke welded them together and brought them out. They really look nice and we will put in for a LiteHouse grant for the work. Les Erickson, Bob Funke, Bill Clarke & Tom Knoll Bill, Tom & Les The Hitch Rails Bill Clarke and his tractor June 11th was the day we drove to the top of Canfield to install a horse step over gate to keep the motorcycles off the trail. The Forest Service had the gate. Bill Clarke, my grandson TJ who is a member of the club, and myself took the concrete and all the tools up and the guys put the gate up on the Bud Howard Trail. Rust Baillie, a biker, constructed a frame for the signs to slow down the bike riders and remind them that horses use the trail. They put his sign board up just before the gate. Thank you to everyone who has helped. It takes effort from several club member to make this all happen. We will get paid by the forest service for some of this work. I am looking forward to the Red Ives weekend and hope we have a good turnout there.

8 8 - JULY 2011 PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN MARIE CREEK TRAIL FUN RIDE Sixteen people showed up for the Marie Creek Trail Ride, held June 18th. Of the sixteen, we had two brand new members riding with us. It was overcast and at one point we were riding under rainy conditions. Fortunately the rain slowed down to sprinkles and our saddles and clothing did not get too wet. As usual, the lower half of the ride was slick and muddy. We got a lot of opportunities to practice water crossings. At the beginning of the ride Trail Boss, Marilyn Rousher and her horse Sammie, met up with a moose that was about fifty feet down the trail. Sammie did a very small sideways spook, the moose did a 180 and trotted away from the group. For about five miles we followed fresh moose tracks moving in front of us down and away. We did not get any more moose Bill Clarke David Rousher sightings the rest of the day. There was a lot of elk sign, but nothing else. We had lunch up at the top meadow, about halfway through the ride. All in all, I hope that everyone had a good time. ~ Marilyn Rousher, Trail Boss New Member Vicki Lowell and Jamie & Stan Smith MARIE CREEK TRAIL FUN RIDE and MEMBERSHIP DRIVE by Joni Lueck, Co-Trail Boss~ The day started out cool but soon warmed up and the sun was out to shine on the many new and existing members of the PBCH at the 4 th of July Rec Area Membership Drive ride Saturday, June 25. As co-trail boss on this ride along with Bea Christopherson, we wanted to get the trail marked and hand out maps so people would have a cleared and safe trail to ride. Thanks to members of the Panhandle Nordic Ski club and a local bike club, along with a few PBCH members, who worked on Father s Day to clear many trails in this area, the trail was open. Lucia Anderson worked 2 full days clearing trail and thoroughly marked the route with orange tape. Some of my nonmember friends also helped clear trails Sunday, June 5 which is when I fell down and broke my foot! Folks who stepped up to help out with planning and leading groups out included Marilyn Rousher who led the 5-mile loop and Lucia Anderson who led the 10-mile loop. Bill Clarke did a great job of parking rigs in the circular parking lot. Terry and Dee Sverdsten and my husband Dave Logue hauled up chairs, tables, BBQs and cooked lots of food for the lunch. Secretary Debbie Samovar took money and signed in riders. Co-trail boss Bea hiked in to the restroom area with her grandsons about 2.5 miles in and gave directions to riders and handed out her homemade chocolate chip cookies. The ride was uneventful as far as accidents and I heard that some folks scared up a moose and her calf that quickly disappeared into the forest. by Lucia Anderson, 10 mile loop lead rider~ We had a great ride. The weather couldn't have been better and we saw wildlife! Somewhere around Ian's hut a grouse tried to chase us off the trail, she spread her tail feathers and came at us but the horses weren't intimidated and we moved on. After going through the tunnel in the trees and around the ditch (I always call those ditches tank traps) we stopped for a minute so I could tell riders we were almost to the road and a very young moose almost ran into us. His mom wasn't far behind and luckily the calf turned and ran off the road instead of through us. The cookies and being greeted at the picnic shelter was a fun surprise. The burgers at the end tasted grand! Thanks Dave! by Marilyn Rousher, 5 mile loop lead rider~ It was extremely well thought out and planned. The cookies made by Bea were wonderful (I was told) and a nice touch for the day. The food (I was told) was fantastic. On my part of the ride, the five mile loop, I had a total of 12 riders. It was a good group and we had fun talking and finding out what people want to do as members of PBCH. The weather was pretty near perfect in my mind. To perpetuate the common sense, use and enjoyment of horses in America s back country and wilderness. 2. To work to insure that public land remains open to recreational stock use. 3. To assist the various government and private agencies in their maintenance and management of said resources. 4. To educate, encourage and solicit active participation in the wise and sustaining use of the back country resources by horsemen and the general public. 5. To foster and encourage the formation of new State Back Country Horsemen organizations. In meeting the goals of our mission statements, Back Country Horsemen in the state of Idaho have spent thousands of volunteer hours on trails, trail heads, campsite maintenance and construction. We have established education chairs in each chapter in Idaho who work to bring the messages of low impact and Leave No Trace techniques to both members and the general public. This fund raiser will help us continue on with this mission.

12 12 - JULY 2011 PANHANDLE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMAN Priest River Valley Backcountry Horseman COMPETITIVE TRAIL RIDE PEE WEE CREEK TRAILHEAD, IDAHO JULY 16, 2011 Come and ride the trails with panoramic views of Priest River Valley. Trail is well groomed with mostly natural trail obstacles. There are small bridges to cross. This will be a 3-hour ride This is NOT a RACE; it's a pleasure ride. SIGN UP will be at 8:30 am until 11:00 am Riders meeting at 9:30 First rider out at 10:00 am Cost $15.00 Ages 17 & under and 18 & over Prizes 1 st thru 3 rd in each age group Over night camping is available for free, no hook ups Directions: Take Hwy 57 North out of Priest River, go 3.5 miles to Peninsula Rd. Turn right, go across bridge, proceed 4.5 miles, turn left onto gravel Forest Road #334 (Gleason-McAbee Falls Rd) proceed 1 mile. Trailhead is on the left just past the old gravel pit. FOR MORE INFORMATION Call Dottie: Or Call Dale: Horses should be shod. No running horses. No stud horses or dogs on trail. No alcohol on trail. Dogs must be on leashes at all times. Riders must wear boots. Requirements: Riders must carry a halter and lead rope on the trail ride. Release forms will be signed. Under 18 require parental Release. Under 14 to be accompanied by an adult. No horses left unattended while you ride. Judging will be accomplished in several areas throughout the course with heavy emphasis on natural trails, obstacles, manners & condition of the horse or mule. MANDATORY EQUIPMENT will consist of boots, saddle, bridle or hackamore, halter and tie rope. You should however, carry any item you might need on a long trail ride. The condition and cleanliness of your equipment will be considered.
