1 October 2016 Oregon Trail News Chartered in May of 1987 Our website location is: We are on Facebook at: Chapter I meets for a Breakfast Gathering on the Second Saturday of every month at: Wichita Bar and Grill Molalla Ave. Oregon City, OR
2 Chapter Directors Corner Hello everyone! It's already the 1st of October, where has the time gone this year?? Over the past month and one half, Cindy and I along with Sandy Neuburger, Rick & Kathy Mashek and Richard & Pat Priest have had a fantastic vacation travelling to Billings Montana for the 38th Wing Ding. Starting in August, the Priests, Cindy and I, Derek Priest, Cindys sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Jerry Harmon, and our great-nephew Stanley went on our annual Buzzard Butt Buster, starting in Prineville, OR to Ellensburg, WA and on through Leavenworth to Ferndale, WA to the Lummi Indian Reservation. We ended at the Silver Reef Casino and Resort. Now mind you that Stanley is only 7 years old, the youngest person to do the Butt Buster ever!! After BBB, the Priests, Cindy and I took off and rode the ferry to Vancouver Island, and went to Victoria BC. We spent 3 days there and enjoyed some of the "normal" sightseeing things, but the most fun thing we did was ride the doubledecker buses. Of course that is to be expected from 2 retired bus drivers. Richard and I were like little kids sitting upstairs in the first seats. After we got back to Portland we had one day to change trailers, do laundry and get ready to head out with the rest of our party to Billings. Our trip had a couple of issues though. I have to take this time to THANK Mark Cole and his crew at Cycle Specialties for their hard work, attention to detail and quickness in repairing my bike. On the BBB, we began to notice some strange noises coming from the bike, on our last day the noises and thumping sounds had increased to the point that I could hear them while going down the road through my helmet. I called Mark and went straight to his shop at 4 in the afternoon, where he diagnosed the problem as a u-joint being out. By the end of the next day, he had my trike repaired and ready to head out. We left the next morning, and by the time we got to Cascade Locks, we discovered that Sandy had a bad leak in her air shocks on her trike. We once again called Mark, and he said she needed to come straight back to his shop so he could repair the issue. She told us to go on and that she would catch up with us. She got to Marks and he fixed the problem and got her back on the road, by this time she was about 3 hours behind us. We kept in contact until she caught up with us in Walla Walla at the RV Park. The next day was a very long day getting to Victor Montana, up over Lolo Pass. We arrived after dark at Pats aunts home and had dinner waiting for us when we got there. That was the best dinner yet! Of course we were very hungry and very tired. We went over some tall mountain passes the next day and I really learned how my GL1500 is lacking in power. Crossing the Continental Divide 3 times that day we went to Big Hole National Battlefield. This was a very heart-wrenching experience to learn about the massacre of Nez Perce by the cavalry. We travelled the next day to Nevada City and Virginia City, and now I wish I had spent more time in Nevada City as Virginia City was too touristy and commercialized. We stayed at the Yellowstone River RV Resort in Billings, which was very nice. Rick and Kathy Mashek finally caught up to us there. We went to Wing-Ding and enjoyed ourselves. We saw lots of old friends, made some new friends, bought things at the vendors, enjoyed the GWRRA Talent Show and other events. The highlight for me was the Drill Team Competition, with the integration of some GWRRA members from Israel on a team. The tough part was watching a couple of bikes go down during the event. We did the tourist things like visiting Little Bighorn National Monument. A very moving experience. We had a wonderful home cooked dinner at my close friends home, and Richard played Pie Face with her grandkids. Naturally. The weather began its seasonal change while we were in Billings, and we headed south to Cody, Wyoming since they closed Beartooth Pass the day we left. Cody Wyoming is famous because of Buffalo Bill Cody. There is a museum that has 5 separate museums within, all different. I could really go back. Dave and Shirley Ridley came in to the KOA we were at on the night before we headed for Yellowstone, it was great to hear about their trip after Wing-Ding to Mt. Rushmore etc. Yellowstone Park was awesome, we should have stayed there at least one more day, but we had miles to travel. The Tetons were beautiful in the setting sun, we ate dinner in Jackson Hole and camped that night in a gravel parking lot at the KOA. They still charged us too much for gravel and no hookups.
3 Chapter Directors Corner (Cont): We headed to Arco, Idaho the next day where we stayed at a nice KOA. Arco has the distinction of being the 1st Atomic City in the USA. A lot of history there, that is still classified. And one heck of a lot of miles where if you get off the road, you are on government property, and I'm not sure if my family would ever see me again. It is kind of like Area 51, but not as well known. And, I'm not joking! We headed for Vale, OR, but not before we visited the Craters of the Moon National Park. Eerie landscape out in the middle of nowhere, this is what scientists thought the moon was like, so they tested the first lunar landers there. Also, just so everybody is real careful in the future, the freeway system in Boise is AWFUL! Sandy, Cindy and I split off from the rest of the group in Vale so that we could head for Spray, to visit our kids and grandkids, then home on the 11th of September. Cindy and I did 3465 miles total with Richard & Pat. Over 2430 miles were with Sandy, Rick and Kathy added in. What an awesome trip! I'm ready to go again, but will have to wait a few months. If you want to go, Wing Ding 39 will be held in Grapevine, Texas Aug Sept. 2, It is a fun experience and what you expect it to be is determined by what you want it to be. This is what being a member of GWRRA is all about, Fun, Friends Knowledge is not just a motto, it's a way of life for all of us. To be on the open road with family, there's nothing else like it out there. We are all family, not just another warm body or number. Others that went on their own trips to Billings had different experiences, but still we all care about each other, and are there to help a brother or sister biker out when they need it most. Don't forget to enjoy yourselves and the company of others. Till next month! Ride safe and keep the rubberside down! Alan & Cindy
4 October2016 RIDING WITH THE FALL SEASON By Ervin L. Reichert GWRRA Chapter I Ride Educator Well here we are going into another Fall Season and all that comes with it. So far we have seen temperatures in the 80's one day and the 60's the next and down to the 40's during the night. We have full sun one day and liquid sunshine the next and any combination of each the other days. The days are getting shorter and the dark nights are getting longer. As fast as the scenery is changing we too must change and be prepared for this new season that is upon us. I for one am still riding as often as I can. However I am finding I need to make more adjustments in how I ride, when I ride, where I ride, what I wear and what I take. I want to share a few things about Fall Riding. Lets start with the road its self. Pavement is at it's slickest just after it rains, more so if it has been dry for a long time. The first 15 to 60 minutes is the most dangerous. This is due to vehicle deposits of oils, fuels, grease and other fluids along with dirt and debris built upon the pavement that is brought to the surface as it rains. Ever see a rainbow on the road? It is most likely one of these fluid spills that has not been fully washed off the road surface. Watch out for those metal manhole covers or the steel plates that are commonly used in road construction, along with the painted lines and symbols for crosswalks, intersections, turns, etc. These along with the tar used for patches are slick without the rain and only get slicker as it rains. Those leaves we enjoy watching turn into the vibrant fall colors can be like ball bearings under the right conditions. Not to mention the dirt and gravel debris that could have washed onto the road just after that last rainstorm. How are your tires? Motorcycle tires by design are efficient at displacing water but are not exempt from hydroplaning. What is hydroplaning? Hydroplaning is when a tire encounters more water than it can dissipate and the tire is riding on a thin film of water causing a loss of traction to the road surface. The result is loss of steering, braking and power control. So again, how are your tires? What does hypothermia and wind chill have to do with riding a motorcycle? Well hypothermia occurs as our body temperatures passes below 95 F. Shivering could be a sign of mild hypothermia. Riding 55 MPH in 45 F weather can produce a wind chill factor of 32 F and riding 55MPH in 32 F weather can produce a wind chill factor of 14 F. How well are you prepared? So what should we do to be safe and enjoy the ride in this time of the year? My first thought is to be prepared. Inspect your bike, check your fluids, tires, lights, battery, etc. Dress in layers so you can easily adjust for the changing weather. Watch the weather reports before and during your ride. Ride with others. Increase your viability by looking farther down the road for potential hazards. Increase your viability to other drivers. Increase your following distance so you have more time to react to hazards. Watch for shiny spots and puddles on the road. Watch for wildlife, they become more active this time of year. Give yourself more time and loosen up. Find a dry line. Be wary of intersections and other drivers. Did you know that a recent study showed there are 29% more accidents in rain related weather than in snowy weather? Till next month be safe and enjoy the ride.
