2 A WORD ON SAFETY 10 Hazards with Autumn Motorcycle Riding by Liz Jansen h p://lizjansen.com/blog With autumn and autumn motorcycle riding officially here, the realiza on that the riding season is drawing to a close shi s the focus of riders from lavishing the dog days of summer to catching the final riding days before storing our bikes. The predictable and cyclical changes in nature occurring at this me of year, create unique hazards for motorcyclists. Even though we can be temporarily teased by unseasonably warm weather and sunny skies, the unstoppable reality is that leaves are falling, temperatures are dropping and daylight is diminishing. Here are ten condi ons to prepare for. 1. Leaves on roads. Dry leaves can camouflage potholes and other road irregulari es. Wet leaves are slippery and can appear unexpectedly in shaded areas. Use cau on par cularly during those scenic autumn rides as condi ons can change. 2. Shorter days. If you do much riding at all, you re likely going to be riding in the dark. Take extra care to make sure bulbs in headlights, brake lights and turn signals are working and lens are clean. Wear high-visibility and reflec ve gear to make yourself as obvious as possible. 3. Sunlight glare. The sun is lower in the sky and glare can be an issue for much of the day, unless you re facing north. Along with this, as trees become barren of leaves, the pa erns of light and shade can be like riding in a strobe light and very distrac ng. 4. Deer migra on and ma ng season. More collisions with deer occur now than at any other me of the year as a result of the drama c increase in their movement. Be especially vigilant at dusk and dawn. 5. Cold res. While touring res with their harder rubber compound are generally more suitable for cold weather, spor er res are not. The spor er the res, the so er the rubber. This is fantas c in hot weather and gives them their grippy characteris cs which aid trac on. In the cold, they re hard and that trac on is gone. 6. Cold riders. Cold is fa guing and in turn can cause greater impairment than moderate alcohol intake. Even when you re wearing good gear and staying warm, the ambient temperature takes its toll. You don t no ce when you re riding, especially over long distances and it can be startling when you stop to realize how red you really are. Staying hydrated and taking regular rest stops help with this.

3 7. Improper gear. Bundling up with lots of layers can be a great strategy for dealing with fluctua ng temperatures during the day. However, too much bulk is not only fa guing, it can impede your ability to react. Heated gear is a fabulous inven on. You need fewer layers and it effec vely and comfortably extends the riding season. 8. Icy road surfaces. Frosty mornings mean that pavement can have a thin layer of ice and you can lose trac on. As the temperature drops in the evening, be par cularly cognizant crossing bridges and shaded areas as they ll ice up first. Be prepared for changing condi ons even during the day if you re travelling through mountains and changing eleva ons. 9. Fewer riders out. This means that car drivers, who don t see us at the best of mes, are now expec ng to see motorcycle riders even less o en. Be more cau ous and alert. Make yourself as conspicuous as possible and assume the don t see you. 10. Isola on. Scenic back roads which weave through quaint small towns, par cularly in tourist areas have a whole different feel to them. Seasonal businesses close and rest stops and favorite watering holes may not be available. Plan accordingly for gas, food, lodging and emergency contacts. Autumn is a beau ful me to ride. There is less traffic on back roads, the fall colors are spectacular and the air is clear and crisp. Once the leaves have fallen, the underlying rocks and terrain become visible. You can see much further and you note things that were always there but covered. The hazards aren t necessarily greater than during other seasons only different. The challenge is being prepared not complacent. The rewards are immeasurable. photo credit: Ne cola via photo pin cc

4 As I m writing this article Wing Ding is just 5 days away, I can t believe David and I have been on the road for 91 days now and 13,000 miles. On our journey through North Carolina we met George and Brenda Harper District Couple of the year and Charles and Sue Langley District MEC. We hope to see them at Wing Ding and cheer them on. It s been nice to meet our GWRRA family along the way. We are following our district and chapter outings on Facebook (FB). I would like to send a very special Thank you to Mary Hunter for overseeing the Oregon District Rally and other district duties in my absence. I would also like to thank everyone who participated and supported both the Oregon Rally and Region I Rally. From the posts on FB, it looks like everybody really enjoyed themselves. David and I would like to send a special thank you to Don and Sharen Weber our Region I directors for providing guidance and support to Oregon District. We are happy to announce that Alan and Cindy Neuberger have agreed to stay on through December as Chapter I Directors, as most of you know this Chapter is going through a rough time right now. As your District Director, I am asking for your input on rebuilding the Chapter. With the new location in Oregon City we have many opportunities. Please contact Alan, David or myself by phone, or text. Thank you for any input. Together we can make things happen. Next up is Wing Ding. If you are going we will see you in Texas, and if not take care and see you next year. Remember you can always contact David or myself any time, and we are in contact with the district team. 5 Trent s Talk Trent s Talk On August 5 th. we held our Trivial Pursuit Ride. I want to thank Dan Burgess for se ng up the route for the ride, Curt and Jan Frink for le ng us start and finish the ride at their house, and for everyone else that helped by manning check points, helping during registra on, cooking breakfast and lunch, and for par cipa ng in the ride. Without everyone s help this would not have been such a successful ride. On August We had 7 members a end the Region I Rally which was held in Tillamook Oregon. A great me was had by all. There were classes/seminars and ac vi es that you could take part in. We had over a hundred people from the Rally take the Coastal Train ride. We basically had the whole train to ourselves. There was a bike show, bike games, a light parade, ice cream social, vender booths, a swap meet, a silent auc on and a brown bag auc on. Fun was there to be had, and you didn t have to look to far or hard to find it. For September, for those who are not planning on a ending Chapter P s Oyster Feed on September th, we have been invited to Bob and Dawna Hitch s house (708 N Second St. Stayton Or, 97381) for their Oktoberfest Campout. They s ll have room for tents and tent trailers. The weekend begins Friday evening with Taco Goodies, Dinner starts around 6:00pm at the Hitch s. Saturday Morning, they will be a ending Chapter G s Gathering then returning to the Hitch s house. Around 11:00 the will leave their house for Mt. Angel to take in the fes vi es in Mt. Angel Oktoberfest. They will return to the Hitch s house later in the a ernoon for a potluck meal around Hamburgers and Oktoberfest sausage. For desert, Bob s mom makes a wonderful Fried Bread. Sunday morning around 8:30 Omelets in a Bag and please bring Breakfast items to share with the group. Please contact Dawna at with a RSVP so they know how many to plan for. Also, please let her know which day(s) you may join them. As September ends, we have the annual End of the Season Campout. Chapter H is hos ng this years End of Season Campout at Hat Rock Campground which is outside of Hermiston Oregon. The campout is scheduled for September 22-24, (See Flier and Registra on in this newsle er.) Check out the September Happenings page to see what else is going on in September As we get closer to the end of the year, we need to start thinking what we as a Chapter want to do next year. Please be thinking what you would like see the Chapter to do in We will start some of the discussions during the September Planning Mee ng. We hope to see you at our upcoming events. ~Trent

Additionally, you can check GWRRA s web site. Pete Patrick won first place in the 1500 class at the bike show and shine. Chip and Kay took first in the Trike games. Mark Bridge will be sworn in as CD and Chip Hass will sworn in as ACD at the Camp Out. This is not the first time this two have stepped up to help keep our Chapter going. I would like to thank them for their many contributions and ask our members to be there Saturday morning at Hat Rock to show support. I would like to thank all the people who have helped Marlis and I this last couple of years as we plane to do some traveling we won't be around but you will always be in our thoughts and prayers. John and Marlis Patrick Linda and I were in Port Angeles and visited the Olympic National Forest. While were there the we also made a day trip over to Victoria BC. While at the Fishermans Wharf for lunch I was eyeballing all the pretty boats about. As we departed on a Water Taxi.,, I spotted this most unusual Gold Wing. She s about 30 feet long and I have no idea what powers her.. But I m guessing she is pretty fast Gerry and Linda Davis...

7 Hello everyone! Chapter Directors Corner I know this newsletter is a little late, sorry about that, but Cindy and I have been out doing what we enjoy. We've been out riding our Trike! We left on the 17th for our Annual Butt Buster trip, and when it was over we headed out to the Washington Coast for the eclipse, we saw nothing because of the morning fog. Then north to Forks, WA for a couple of days, we did not run into any werewolves or vampires, but we did see Bella s truck. Continuing on to Port Townsend and ferrying across to Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island. We stayed in a VFW Campground. We kept going to Sumas WA, then entered Canada and spent a couple of days in Hope BC. We visited Hells Gate on the Fraser River. We went to Osoyoos BC and spent a couple of days. While we were there, we went to the Leesure Lite factory so they could make some repairs to my trailer, then back into the USA and Lake Chelan. Finally from Goldendale WA to home. Rode 1585 miles, and my odometer turned 190,000 miles on my 1990 Goldwing! It was a great trip with our close friends Richard & Pat Priest. If you are wondering why you are receiving a newsletter this month, it is because the District asked Cindy and I to stay on as your Chapter Directors. We agreed to remain until the end of the year. I will continue to do the newsletter until then. There were four options presented at our last gathering by the District & Region staff. Those options included, continuing until December 31st; disbanding the chapter immediately; merging the chapter with Chapter G; or putting the chapter on a hiatus until the end of the year when it would officially close down. Cindy and I do not want to see the chapter shut down, so that is why we are staying on. Hopefully someone will step up by the end of the year. We will be attending the End of Season Campout this month, and would love to see more of our members participate. Please review the flyers in this newsletter and register. Till next month! 10 Hi guys & gals. Oregon District End of Season Campout September 22-24, 2017 Hat Rock Campground Hermiston, Oregon The Campout will be at Hat Rock Camp Ground. Here is what we will be doing, we will have Friday night chili & brats, Saturday morning we will cook breakfast of Eggs, Biscuits & Gravy and Sausage, Saturday night BBQ burgers, Hot Dogs with baked beans and some salads. Dessert will be whatever anyone wants to bring. The cost for campout is nothing, but it will be $5.00 per meal. We will be having a Chapter poker run on Saturday, this will be our only fundraiser for the year. I have reserved 10 camp sites, there are more sites as needed. the sites are big, we can put 2 or 3 tents or tent trailers or an RV and tent trailer. The sites I have reserved are under Goldwing and / or Oregon H. This is going to be a simple laid back campout so come relax and enjoy. Attached is a price sheet from Hat Rock. Anyone that wants to camp contact me for a campsite. You will pay Hat Rock when you check in. Any sites that aren't spoken for by Sept 15, will be canceled so we don't have to pay for them. I will make a registration form so we can get an idea of how many are coming. No one will need to send any money with there registration. They can buy meal tickets at the campout. We are open to any ideas and thoughts to help make this fun and enjoyable.
