Even though they were in position for a short period of time, I appreciate all your help and all you did for Chapter I. We wish you well and look forward to seeing you when you can attend. Again, Thank You both. I m looking forward to seeing you soon. Ride Safe- Drive Safe and Love Life..because you can =) Bijou and Mike White GWRRA-OR-I Chapter Director
3 FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR AND RIDE COORDINATOR: With each new year there are seasons in which you can see the changes outside, in your personal life and work life has been rather full of changes in our household so far. Both Bob and myself have had job changes within the last 3 months which requires some weekends and evenings. We are starting a new chapter in our life. With the new jobs come change like the seasons. Bob and I will be stepping down from our positions with Chapter I as your Ride Coordinator and Assistant Chapter Director effective immediately. Please help Bijou as she looks for replacements for our positions. We will still continue being Rider Education instructors in Oregon. We will be participating with the chapter when we can and wish that you give Bijou your support in her term as Chapter Director. She has many great ideas to have fun but it takes more than a handful of people to accomplish that. It takes all of you working together to have fun. We hope to see you when we are able to visit or perhaps on a ride. Keep the shiny side up! Bob and Dawna Hitch
4 FROM THE RIDER EDUCATOR Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Joshua Smith and I am your new Rider Educator. I have a beautiful wife and 6 wonderful children. I received my first motorcycle from my dad when I was 11 years old. It was a Honda XL80. I have enjoyed motorcycling ever since. In 2016 I discovered long-distance riding. This lead me to the ultimate long-distance luxury touring machine. I purchased my 2010 GL1800 in August of In these few months I have accumulated about 20,000 miles. I put 9,000 miles on a recent two-week trip. This trip involved me riding from Portland, OR to Meridian, Mississippi to meet with my dad and 2 uncles. From Mississippi we rode to Orlando, Key West and Deals Gap for a rainy ride on the Tail of the Dragon. I really enjoyed the sunset in New Mexico. The setting sunlight made the hills glow an amazing red. We really can enjoy some amazing places on a Gold Wing. After having what is now my favorite fish tacos at El Bruno s Restauranté I rode to the national forest to camp for the night. I was turning off pavement so I stopped to check it out. My first thought was to get off the bike and walk the route I wanted to go, but it was getting late, so I looked from the bike and saw packed gravel. I started down the forest service road and it quickly turned to rutted packed sand. I turned a corner and it then turned to deep sand. I caught the Gold Wing before it fell, but I could not lift it back. I made the decision to let the bike fall in the sand. I have to say, I have picked my bike up before, but on a hard surface. It is not easy to pick up a heavy bike in the sand. I tried until I was exhausted then set up my tent next to the bike. About the time I was going to get in the tent, Miles pulled up in his F-150 and helped me. Miles works on cell towers. I am thankful he arrived to helped me. The GL1800 is a heavy bike. It was designed to be picked up, but if the conditions are not right it is very difficult and should be done with at least two people. I hope to have my video completed of the ride through the keys. The emerald green water speckled with islands was a beautiful sight. No better way to experience 7 mile bridge than on a motorcycle. Key West is an amazing place, but not the best place for large motorcycles. There were scooters everywhere and it may be the best way to get around. We settled for walking. There are so many things to see that a scooter would pass too quickly. I m a Jimmy Buffet fan and had to have a drink at Capt. Tony s. We also stopped at Sloppy Joes, Bistro 245 (Mallory Square), Hogs Breath, and Margaritaville Café. We slayed the dragon at Tail of the Dragon. Well, actually, we more tiptoed past it. The day we had to ride it was very wet. The night before our ride we had an interesting dinner time at a nearby lodge. The food was good, but they seated us far from the other customers. It could have been that they thought we were rough bikers, or it could have been we had been on the road for six days. There are a lot more stories from that 2 weeks and 9,000 miles. I hope I have fanned your spark to ride and have your own adventures. We only have so many trips around the sun let s make the most of them.
5 Some FUN things to know that could win you cash or prizes! Chapter I members, wear your Chapter colors and vest to our Chapter gathering and if your name is drawn from the bag and you win $$CASH$$$. Chapter colors consist of any of the embroidered shirts that has our Chapter I logo on them. The grey, burgundy or the current green is honored for the drawing. Bring to the gathering a minimum of 5 any cans, bottles that have a deposit on them and trade them for a drawing ticket at the Chapter gathering and you could win a nice prize. *************************************************************************************** Dianna and Fred Borke, Don Winterfield, Mark Brooks, Bijou and Mike attended the April Dinner Social at the Corner Saloon. This was Art s pick but he was a little under the weather so he didn t attend. Most everybody had sandwiches, which looked great and those folks said they were really good. Bijou and I had steaks and they were cooked perfectly. Who would have thought a bar and grill would have a really good steak. Service was good; got served by numerous servers. They didn t make any mistake. Took a little time but with all the great conversations going on, we didn t care. Bijou and I will be back again. *************************************************************************************** TELL YOUR RIDE When I ask you, What was your favorite ride? The first ride that pops into your mind is what I want you to share with the world. So many roads out there just calling to be shared with others. If you can put into writing the names of the town, road names, attractions, best time of year to ride, duration, suggestions to make the ride better, highlights, and as much information you can give, we will be able to create a collection to pick from for all future rides. The information will be gathered and entered into a database to share with all those interested in riding more and enjoying the great outdoors that is here in the Pacific Northwest. Please submit this information in a way that is easiest for you. the chapter to any of the contacts listed on our website. Facebook for all that prefer is available. We will compile what we gather and get busy on riding these rides. The more we have the better. So, please take a minute to jot down the above information and just get a note to us so we can get busy building this project. Thanks in advance. Mark Brooks HELP WANTED Looking for fun and friendly male or female to help grow our Chapter. Experience not necessary. Pay is excellent!! Benefits are riding your motorcycle, helping the Chapter. Do you have 1 hour a week spare to help? Contact Bijou if interested.
