2 A WORD ON SAFETY FROM GRAHAM MUNSELL Motorcycle fatalities in Oregon Oregon has been implementing more and more training for those riding motorcycles. The goal is to reduce the annual number of deaths in the community of motorcycle riders. The goals of offering and providing many opportunities has been to continue reducing the unnecessary loss of lives. For example, Team Oregon trains approximately 10,000 riders each year. However, when comparing the number of fatalities in 994 through 2105 indicates something is amiss. The number of fatalities is no longer decreasing. In an effort to look at the issues several are taking a look at the trends in Oregon and nationally, regarding population increases, ridership increases, fatalities increases, average rider age, number of motorcycles registered, number of fatalities among four wheeled vehicle operators and number of riders trained. The number of registered motorcycles (US) in 1994 was 3.7 million. In 2014, there were 8.4 million registered motorcycles. The number of fatalities in the 1990 s were about 2,000 annually. Since 2004, fatalities have risen to 3,800 annually. I gathered this information from David Houff s article in Motorcycle Consumer News, November, Oregon, 1994, indicate there were 3,119,940 million residing within. There were 22 fatals that year. 2004, Oregon population was 3,582,600 residents and 37 fatals. In 2014, the population was 3,831,710 with 44 fatals. 2015, 4,028 population, 60 fatals. Finally, 2016, population estimate is 4,093,465 but, Oregon preliminary reports indicate 53 fatals. The discussion becomes are we riding beyond our abilities, what other issues affects our ability to be more safe while ridin g? Checkout the link below!

3 March 2017 notes from the Oregon Director I can t believe it is March and spring is just around the corner. Happy St. Patrick s Day, may the luck of the leprechaun shine upon you. Oregon s first ride is the Blarney Run hosted by Chapter I, Oregon City. This run is a canned food drive for the local community. Let s see who can bring the most canned foods to the run for bragging rights for the year, its measured by poundage. March 18, see Chapter I website from more informa on. Oregon has been busy with a Frist Aid/CPR class and now has 3 Frist Aid/CPR Instructors. Congratula on to our new instructors, Trent Axen and Mike Robinson from Chapter G and Sandy Neuberger from Chapter I. We will put their contact informa on on the Oregon Director website. Next up, we are working on pu ng together an ARC and TRC classes in April or May meframe. We are having a district mee ng April 2, 2017 at Cousins Restaurant in The Dallas, 11:30am. This is to plan out the District Rally, End of Season campout, and the district s future. Your input is very important to David and I and our district. Please RSPV me by March 20 th if you are a ending. We are having a District Rally in June, it s me to ride or drive our two, three or four wheels and have fun. Hope you can come down and support a small community in Oregon and enjoy a great dinner and riding. We installed a new treasurer in February for Chapter H. Congratula on to Gerald and Linda Davis. We appreciate members stepping up and taking posi ons. This makes our Chapter and District run well, we are looking for an Asst. Oregon Director, District Ride ED, and Membership Enhancement. 4 Trent s Talk On February 10-12th, we had our Winter Campout at Riverbend Campground in Foster. There were about 20 members who spent the weekend and on Saturday there were 6 more members who showed up for Saturday s activities. There is a lot to look forward to in the month of March. Check out our calendar for a full list of activities. On Saturday the 11th. We are attending the Fireman's Breakfast in Brooks. For those how want to ride over as a group we will meet at Cycle Country with kickstands up at 8:30. Cycle Country is located at 4764 Portland RD NE. Come join us and support these local fire departments. They are often going to be the ones responding if one of us experiences an incident while we are enjoying our rides on all of the back roads that lead us to FUN. On March 18th, right after our Gathering, we will be heading to Chapter I s annual Blarney Ride. This wonderful event combines a great ride, some good food, and a friendly rivalry between Chapters. Who will bring in the most canned goods to be donated to the food bank? Remember to bring in canned goods with the factory labels on them, any cans with out the factory labels will have to be discarded. The winner will be determined by the most weight brought in. If you can not make it or need it transported, bring it in at the gathering and we will make arrangements. This is really a good way to spend a Saturday with Food, Fun & Friends. Chapter G s next major event is the Right Turn Ride on April 29th. We are starting at Cycle Country in Salem, Oregon. We have been in contact with Cycle Country and they are looking forward to having us start the Right Turn Ride from their business this year. We have started collecting door prizes for the Right Turn Ride fundraiser. If you have any door prizes, you may drop them off with any of the Chapter team members at the monthly gatherings or at the planning meetings. We are looking forward to seeing you at one or more of our upcoming activities. Be safe out there, the only person truly looking out for you is yourself. ~Trent

5 Chapter Directors Corner First of all, I want to thank Erv Reichert for running the Breakfast Gathering on February 11th. Cindy and I were out of town, and he stepped up to make sure that you all could have an informational meeting. Thanks again Erv. Well, the flyer is out for the District Rally this summer. It is included in the newsletter. Its going to be an awesome and different Rally. I am really looking forward to eating dinner at the Cowboy Dinner Tree! I have tried numerous times in the past to hookup with Chapter G when they have gone there and it seems that something always came up. This will be a real camping type of Rally, there are rooms available nearby, but we are hoping the chapter can camp together. More news as it becomes available. Coming up this month is our Annual Blarney Run! Once again we will be raising food and funds for the H.O.P.E. program. I know that Erv is putting together a great ride for all, so come on and lets ride! We are starting a little later than usual, as we will be waiting for Chapter G to come up from Salem to join us. Maybe this year, we can beat them out for the most pounds of donated food. On a more important note, our staff works very hard at putting together a great program for you to enjoy. It takes weeks of work by our Ride Educator to bring his articles and talks to you, all of our staff is involved in many other areas other than just what the title by their name may say. Its not an easy task being a Director, Treasurer or Educator. We also have many unseen or unrecognized individuals that contribute to your GWRRA experience. If you do not feel that you are getting what you want out of GWRRA, then please tell us. We cannot improve your experience without input from you. Because without you, the member, there is no Chapter. We need to have more folks step up and help out also. The same people doing the same things over and over create a stagnant group. New and fresh faces and ideas are always needed. So come to the chapter meetings and help us provide an great program for you. Congratulations go out to Sandy Neuburger, she is now officially trained as a Medic First Aid Instructor. She will be available in the future to put on classes for all the chapters in our area and district. We have finalized the details of our 2017 Rally to be held in Great Falls, MT on July The US Air Force Thunderbirds are scheduled to fly on the 22 and 23. We have already made arrangements with Dicks RV Park to host all you campers, and we have also finalized the details with the Crystal Inn to get you the best price possible. You can go ahead and make your reservations at the Hotel and Campground using Goldwing as your reservation code. The cutoff date for the block we have set up is May 1, 2017 at both places. 18 MAKE YOUR GATHERING OR DINNER MEETING MORE PLEASURABLE AND ENTERTAINING Team Building Game to Play before Gathering Balloon Pass Smash * This is a great group game for getting people to sit in new spots and with new people. Always good to mix up those little groups that form. Beforehand, blow up a balloon for each person (have extras). Inside each balloon have a coin of different value, different dates, etc. Get everyone together in a circle, then, while music plays, pass a few balloons around. When the music stops, anyone holding a balloon has to pop it and keep the coin. After everyone has had a turn popping a balloon, then have everyone sit according to their money (value of coin, year of mint, etc.).
