1 SAN FRANCISCO POLICE DEPARTMENT RICHMOND STATION May 25th, 2017 Volume 1, Issue 10 CAPTAIN S MESSAGE: I am happy to report that Richmond Police Station had another successful Bay to Breakers come passing through our district, and our officers managed to work the event with little to no problems. However, I was saddened to see that the following day, Manchester suffered a horrific loss at one of their Captain Alexa O Brien large events. This served as a reminder to me that there is a great importance for our community and police to work together in order to keep our city safe and secure. As terror threatens communities around the world and continues to evolve, law enforcement relies on the assistance and support of all of you. So as the summer approaches and more events and large crowds gather to enjoy music, food and fun, our police officers and public must remain vigilant. Report suspicious behavior and if you see something, say something. On a brighter note, this weekend and week was filled with lot of activities for our station. On Saturday, I had the honor of attending the Shared School Yard Event at Sutro Elementary. Some of the people in attendance were Supervisor Mark Farrel, Supervisor Sandy Fewer and Michael Carr. This ribbon cutting ceremony marked another school yard that is open to our neighborhood kids which gives them a safe place to learn how to ride a bike, play basketball or simply just to have empty space to run around. Thank you to Sutro Elementary for their generosity and community spirit! Quote of the week: Survival can be summed up in three words - never give up. That's the heart of it really. Just keep trying. 3 STREET HOCKEY MATCH: SFPD VS. LAFAYETTE ELEMENTARY The children of the after school program at Lafayette Elementary School challenged the officers of Richmond Station to a street hockey match. Great banner made by Lafayette Elementary kids. Officer Bryant and Officer Garrett playing defense, and Officer Moore in goal. The kids certainly had the numbers advantage at one point. Lining up for high-fives after the game. It was a competitive game, and the officers and children had a great time. Looking forward to the rematch! 4 INCIDENTS IN THE RICHMOND DISTRICT THIS WEEK AUTO BURGLARY SUSPECTS EVADE RICHMOND OFFICERS IN A STOLEN VEHICLE POINT LOBOS AVENUE & MERRIE WAY 5/17/2017 8:05 PM The area of Lands End Lookout is a popular tourist destination in the Richmond District. It is also an area where cars are frequently broken into. Officers from Richmond Station regularly patrol this area in order to prevent this crime from happening. When Richmond District officers were driving by the parking lot, they heard a car alarm go off. They drove into the parking lot and immediately saw two subjects getting into a silver 2-door Mercedes Benz. The vehicle quickly exited the parking lot, making an illegal turn. Suspecting that they had just interrupted an auto burglary in progress, the officers attempted to catch up with the vehicle. The officers ran a record check on the vehicle s license plate. The results showed that the vehicle was reported stolen out of San Jose. As the officers activated their lights to stop the vehicle, it sped away at a high rate of speed. The driver of the stolen vehicle was driving recklessly and endangering the lives of other drivers around him as he evaded the officers. With the public s safety in mind, the officers decided not to pursue the evading vehicle. They returned to the parking lot, where they found the vehicle which had been broken into. SUSPECT S BLOOD- ALCOHOL CONTENT IS ALMOST FOUR TIMES THE LEGAL LIMIT! BALBOA STREET & PARK PRESIDIO AVENUE 5/19/2017 3:14 AM Officers from Richmond Station came upon a vehicle collision at the intersection of Balboa St and Park Presidio in which, thankfully, nobody was injured. As the officers were on scene conducting their investigation, they realized that one of the drivers was exhibiting symptoms of intoxication. The officers conducted a thorough D.U.I. investigation, which included a series of field sobriety tests. The suspect performed poorly on the field sobriety tests, and he was given a preliminary alcohol screening test at the scene. The suspect blew a high of.33 BAC, over four times the legal limit of.08! The driver was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. He was transported to blow on the official breathalyzer machine where he blew a.31 BAC. This suspect was booked at San Francisco County Jail on D.U.I. charges. Page 4

5 INCIDENTS IN THE RICHMOND DISTRICT THIS WEEK JUVENILES INVOLVED IN RICHMOND DISTRICT ROBBERY 34 TH AVENUE & CLEMENT STREET 5/18/2017 8:00 AM A juvenile was walking with his phone in his hand when he was approached by two suspects. One of the suspects grabbed the juvenile, pulled him into a nearby carport, and demanded he hand over his phone. The juvenile refused to give the suspect his phone, so the suspect held what appeared to be a gun to the victim s side. The suspect once again demanded the juvenile s phone, but he still would not hand it over. The suspect began to struggle with the juvenile over the phone, when the suspect punched the juvenile several times in the head and neck area. The juvenile eventually lost control of his phone, which fell to the ground. However, the struggle had raised the attention of passersby, and the suspects fled the scene without the phone. Richmond District officers responded to the scene and met with the juvenile. Officers discovered, what the juvenile believed was a gun was actually a gun-shaped knife. Officers also located two persons nearby who matched the suspects descriptions. The officers conducted an extensive investigation into the incident and determined that only one of the detained persons was involved in the crime. The other simply matched the description of the outstanding suspect. The uninvolved subject was released. The detained suspect, who was also a juvenile, was placed under arrest and booked at the Juvenile Justice Center. The Richmond Special Investigations Team is working hard to identify and arrest the outstanding suspect involved in the robbery. AUTO BOOST LEADS TO FRAUDULENT DEBIT CARD USE MLK JR DRIVE & 25 TH AVENUE 5/20/2017 3:00 PM Auto burglary incidents are the most commonly reported crime in the Richmond District. A San Francisco resident recently came to Richmond Station to report that their vehicle had been broken into inside Golden Gate Park. Unfortunately for this victim, their ordeal did not end there. What undoubtedly began as a nice day in the park turned sour when the victim s car was broken into and her purse was stolen. A witness was able to provide a description of the perpetrators, but the incident was reported too late for officers to search for the suspects. The victim s wallet was inside her purse, along with several credit and debit cards. The savvy crooks knew exactly how to take full advantage of the unfortunate victim. When the victim checked their bank account balance, they saw almost $2,000 in fraudulent charges had been made at a local San Francisco chain drugstore. How the suspects were able to make this massive purchase at a drugstore without raising suspicion remains to be seen The Richmond Station Investigations Team is currently exploring all possible leads on this case. Hopefully the suspects will be identified and arrested in the near future. Page 5

6 RICHMOND STATION S OFFICERS OF THE WEEK Officer DeAndre Dudley Officer Dudley is a probationary officer here at Richmond Station. He currently works day watch. He was born and raised here in San Francisco, and he attended Phillip and Sala Burton High School. Officer Dudley has been a police officer with the San Francisco Police Department for a year. Prior to being a police officer, he worked as an electrician in the City. His motivation for becoming a police officer was a desire to serve his community. He also enjoys interacting with people and helping them whenever possible. Officer Dudley s Safety Tip of the Week: I have taken several burglary reports recently. It is very helpful when people have surveillance camera systems. I think it acts as a deterrent for thieves when they see the cameras. When it doesn t deter them, it can provide useful evidence for the investigation. Officer Dudley brightens up Richmond Station. He can regularly be heard singing in the hallways. He likes listening to piano jazz music and watching Western movies. He is also very involved in his church. Page 6
