1 Richmond Station Newsletter San Francisco Police Department August, 1st 2018 CAPTAIN S MESSAGE: Hello Richmond District Residents, National Night Out is next week on August 7th from 4 pm to 7 pm here at Richmond Station, 461 6th Ave. We have a lot of fun activities including face painting, jumpy house, food, Firetruck, Canine Officer, Mounted Police, and much more. Tools and supplies are sometimes left at the site unattended or unsecured. Here are a few tips to prevent burglary at construction sites: 1.Secure all equipment and vehicles at all times. 2.Consider the use of security systems and locking fencing. See page 16 for more tips. 2 Officer of the Month Marlon Laoagan Meet Officer Laoagan, Richmond Station s Officer of the month. Laoagan has been with the department for 1.5 years and has worked at Ingleside and Richmond Stations. He can be seen working a sector car on the day watch here in the Richmond District. Laoagan grew up in the Central Valley and attended CSU East Bay in Hayward. Before becoming an Officer he worked security and taught and competed in Martial Arts across California. Laoagan still enjoys training in Martial Arts to stay in shape and be ready for work. He also enjoys shooting, traveling, and spending time with his dog. When you see him out on patrol make sure to say hi! 2

3 Citizens of the month Tapestry annex group The Tapestry Annex Group weaves together in the Richmond Station Community Room on a regular basis. The group was formed in June of 2017 after meeting in a weaving class at City College. Members of the group are diverse and have different levels of weaving skills. Tapestry Annex is an artistic outlet for the members. They enjoy getting together to weave for fun and support one another. 3

7 DEFINITION OF SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY Suspicious activity is any observed behavior that could indicate a crime-related incident has been committed, or about to be committed. Unusual items or situations: A vehicle is parked in an odd location, a package/luggage is left unattended, a window/ door is open that is usually closed, or other out-of-the-ordinary situations occur. Examples of Suspicious Activity: An individual peering into vehicles, to try and locate any valuables left unattended. An individual trying door handles to vehicles, and/or residences to gain access to the vehicle and/or residence. An individual checking front doors of residences to locate any unattended packages, or individuals following delivery trucks to see where the truck is dropping off packages. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING DEFINITIONS OF CRIME Robbery Robbery is the taking of property from another by using force or by using fear. Assault An assault is an unlawful attempt, coupled with the present ability, to commit a violent injury on another person. Battery- (Misdemeanor battery) is any willful and unlawful touching of another. (Felony battery) is the use of force or violence upon the person of another that causes serious bodily in jury. **Assault is when a person swings their arm and battery is when that arm makes contact with another person. ** Aggravated Assault Assault upon another person with a deadly weapon or instrument other than a firearm or by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury. Burglary The intent upon entry into a property to commit grand theft, petty theft, or any felony. 7

9 SAN FRANCISCO POLICE DEPARTMENT INCIDENTS IN THE RICHMOND DISTRICT THIS WEEK Driving Under the Influence (Arrest) 07/27/ Hours Lake St/ 7th Ave A witness found a running vehicle partially blocking a roadway, with the driver unconscious, slumped over the steering wheel, and intermittently activating the horn with his forehead. Officers respond to the 911 call, observed objective symptoms of alcohol impairment, as well as numerous open and recently-consumed alcoholic beverage containers strewn about the vehicle. The driver (who was not in medical distress) refused to answer questions or perform Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The suspect was arrested and booked in County Jail One on the following charges: Driving under the influence. Commercial Burglary 07/25/ Hours 3500 Block Geary Blvd A store employee witnessed the suspect enter the store and walk over to the phone display. The suspect then ripped three phones off the wall and fled the store. The suspect entered a blue convertible Ford Mustang and fled eastbound on Geary Blvd. The suspect is described as a Black Male, years old, wearing a black beanie, dark shirt, and blue jeans. The suspect is still outstanding. Theft of Property, Warrant (Arrest) 07/27/ hours 5th Ave/ Lake St. Witness observed the suspect steal a package from a building. Officers responded to the scene and located the suspect on a Muni Bus and placed him under arrest. Officers where able to locate the stolen items and return them to their proper owners. A records check of the suspect revealed he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a similar offense. The suspect was arrested and booked into County Jail One on the following charges: Theft, Possession of stolen property, Warrant. 9
