It s time to crawl out from our hangars and get back into those aviation events we all love so much. You ll see elsewhere in this month s Strobe that we ve kicked off our IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) Club gatherings. These are extremely informal meetings. The first one was well attended and greatly enjoyed. Look over Dick s article on it. If you re looking for somewhere to fly, the EAA s B-17 will be in Concord from March and then in Vacaville from March If you want to support Young Eagles, EAA Chapter 1476 is looking for pilots for their YE event on March 26th. Jim Wilson, Navigator/Tacco USNR, will talk about the 50+ year history of the P3 Orion in the US Navy, the ASW mission and maritime patrol in the Pacific and beyond. From 1962 to the present, this stalwart aircraft has served many nations of the world. Some harrowing and some humorous stories will be told by a navigator who seldom say daylight from the nearly windowless tube! Kim will bring card to meeting next week for everyone to sign and send to wife. Al will get Kim all the information for the newsletter. Budget/Spending Al would like us to get a formal budget, each committee member needs to submit their 2017 income & expense for all projects/activities by April Board Meeting. Jim Wilson - Vice President Pancake Breakfasts we start next month. Kim will order generic postcards and new banner, Jim will start shopping for supplies. Scholarship Programs Incentive rewards, Brandon was awarded $500 and we have 6 students under 25 years old that will be eligible for FAA written course to be paid from this fund, if they pass our class and test. Ground School 18 students attending; it is going well and our new instructor is doing an excellent job. Great facilitator and teacher. Meeting Programs Jim Wilson is the presenter at the March general meeting; have a SR71 pilot Jim will try to get to speak to us. Hanger Improvements Timing switches on heaters have been installed, please don t for get to close propane tank, before leaving, it does syphon into the hangar. John Vybril donated his nephews time and $100 to ensure this was completed properly. Installation of front and back lights has been completed by Dale Kral Robin Stanton donated a very nice stove, so we are ready for pancake breakfast eggs. Jim would like to change out the hangar florescent lights with LED, Kim made a motion, Al 2nd, all approved. Jim will request that Matt install a key pad at our gate, if needed we will pay upto $100 to have this completed. The left heater keeps flaming out, we need to find someone to repair this properly. Flight Simulator Jason Brand will bring up 2 monitors this Saturday to set up panoramic view and see how it runs. He also has loaned a joy stick and throttle from an A10. 3 February 2017 The Hangtown Strobe Page 2 Strange Birds and other Aviation Mysteries redistributed by your Strobe Editor, from the Washington Post, by Amy Wang It was one of the longest and most exhaustive investigations in FBI history and to this day remains the only unsolved skyjacking in the United States. In 1971, a well-dressed passenger hijacked a Northwest Orient flight, demanded $200,000 and later escaped by parachuting out of the back of the plane with the ransom money. But who exactly was D.B. Cooper, the mysterious man who managed to pull off the heist and disappear without a trace? More than four decades later, three amateur scientists think they may have found evidence that would narrow down Cooper s identity to that of an aerospace engineer or a manager. The scientists, working for a group called Citizen Sleuths, said they have been analyzing particles found on a clip-on necktie that Cooper left on his seat 18E before jumping out of the plane. To the naked eye, the piece of fabric was a nondescript black tie from J.C. Penney. But to the modern-day scientists, the tie was an incredibly fortunate piece of evidence in the investigation. A tie is one of the only articles of clothing that isn t washed on a regular basis, reads a section on the Citizen Sleuths website devoted solely to the tie. It picks up dirt and grime just like any other piece of clothing, but that accumulation never truly gets reset in the washing machine. Each of those particles comes from something and somewhere and can tell a story if the proper instruments like electron microscopes are used. Using a powerful electron microscope, the scientists say they have identified more than 100,000 particles of rare earth elements on the tie, including Cerium, Strontium sulfide and pure titanium, according to the Associated Press. Of those, titanium was the most notable. Titanium was a rare metal in 1971 and this makes it extremely unlikely it is a post-event contamination, Citizen Sleuths notes on its site, which lays out in painstaking detail all of the findings from the case. Its presence constrains Cooper to a limited number of managers or engineers in the titanium field that would wear ties to work. At the time, they noted, the element was used extensively by the military in aircraft and helicopters. Scientists think he may have worked at Boeing, which at the time happened to be developing a Super Sonic Transport plane that used those elements, Tom Kaye, a lead researcher with Citizen Sleuths, told King 5 News. The tie went with him into these manufacturing environments, for sure, so he was not one of the people running these [manufacturing machines], Kaye told the news station. He was either an engineer or a manager in one of the plants. [The D.B. Cooper case has baffled the FBI for 45 years. Now it may never be solved.] The mystery began on Nov. 24, 1971, when a nondescript man going by the name of Dan Cooper purchased a one-way ticket from Portland, Ore., to Seattle directly from the Northwest Orient Airlines counter on the day of the flight. He used cash to pay for his ticket, then boarded the plane. Authorities later described him as someone in his mid-40s, dressed as an executive in a suit, a white shirt and what probably is the now-infamous black tie. The agency s official summary of how the hijacking unfolded reads like the plot of a Hollywood thriller from another era: He ordered a drink bourbon and soda while the flight was waiting to take off. A short time after 3:00 p.m., he handed the stewardess a note indicating that he had a bomb in his briefcase and wanted her to sit with him. The stunned stewardess did as she was told. Opening a cheap attaché case, Cooper showed her a glimpse of a mass of wires and red colored sticks and demanded that she write down what he told her. Soon, she was walking a new note to the captain of the plane that demanded four parachutes and $200,000 in twenty-dollar bills. When the flight landed in Seattle, the hijacker exchanged the flight s 36 passengers for the money and parachutes. Cooper kept several crew members, and the plane took off again, ordered to set a course for Mexico City Somewhere between Seattle and Reno, a little after 8:00 p.m., the hijacker did the incredible: He jumped out of the back of the plane with a parachute and the ransom money. The pilots landed safely, but Cooper had disappeared into the night and his ultimate fate remains a mystery to this day. The FBI pursued hundreds of leads. No body or parachute was ever found, but in 1980, a boy digging near the Columbia River found three bundles of $20 bills whose serial numbers matched the money Cooper had demanded.

EAA to Celebrate Apollo Program s 50th Anniversary Astronaut reunion planned for EAA AirVenture 2017 January 31, Astronauts from most of the Apollo missions that put humans on the moon for the first time are expected to be at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo program. The reunion is expected to be the largest gathering of Apollo astronauts at Oshkosh since the memorable 1994 Salute to Apollo program that brought together 15 of the men who were the faces of the American effort to put men on the moon. Many of the activities will be centered on the event s Apollo Day on Friday, July 28, which is highlighted by a major evening program at Theater in the Woods. This will be a rare, unforgettable gathering of the people who met the challenge of flying to the moon and safely returning, representing hundreds of thousands of individuals who contributed to its success, said Rick Larsen, EAA s vice president of communities and member benefits. You may never get another opportunity to see these people in person and up close, as you will at Oshkosh this summer. Those who have already confirmed their attendance include Frank Borman (Apollo 8), Walt Cunningham (Apollo 7), Fred Haise (Apollo 13), Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 and Apollo 13), and Al Worden (Apollo 15). Additional astronauts are expected to confirm their attendance in the coming weeks, and further details on events and schedules will be announced as they are finalized.
