Volume 30 Issue 10 2nd Place McKillop Award 1996 & 1999 OCTOBER 2018 PREZ SEZ By Tim Sullivan With the passing of John Spencer, EAA 512 will hold a special November pancake breakfast in his memory. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Angel Flight program. Please find the details within this newsletter. As we begin to wrap up the year your elected EAA board is working on a number of items to improve the hangar, and activities for the remainder of this year and on into next year. It is the time of year that we start looking at electing the new EAA board for next year. I have served in every capacity for the chapter over the last 20 years, and this year as your president has been the pinnacle of my experiences with our chapter. I want to invite YOU to bring your talents forward and consider being on the board. It is a challenging and rewarding experience that every member should participate in for at least one term. If you are not able to be a board member, then there are many committees that can also use your talents. We have a vibrant active chapter and your assistance is the key to our chapter s vitality. Nothing brings more joy to pilots and kids than a Young Eagles event. Last Saturday chapter pilots flew over 35 kids; lots and lots of smiles on faces as they exited the planes. I had the chance to talk to the parents during the event and almost all of them said their kid(s) want to be pilots. Some of them will be starting our ground school classes next year. Some will be joining the Civil Air Patrol and some will be working very hard to be placed in one of our service academies. I wish them all the best in their journey of aviation; they are our future and will carry on our joy of flying. Someday I hope they will be writing this letter from the president and in turn passing along the same encouragement and love of flying to their successor generations as well. Fly safe all. At this time each year, the Board of Directors positions open for nominations, and we encourage you to consider adding your name to the hat. We are a vibrant, active, busy chapter with wonderful members and volunteers. We are currently aware that the position of President and the position of Secretary will be replaced with other members willing to step up to the plate. Will this be YOU? Of course, all positions are open for nominations. As Tim said, It is a challenging and rewarding experience that every member should participate in for at least one term. Nominations for board members for next year will be opened at this week s general meeting on Wednesday, October 17th, Our nominating committee chair is Glenn Gordon. Please let Glenn know if you are interested in running. Votes will be taken at the November general meeting on 11/21. 3 YOUNG EAGLES FLIGHT A BEAUTIFUL DAY! By Jim Wilson By all measures, especially the smiles on kids faces, we had a very successful Young Eagles flight on Saturday, October 13. Forty (four zero) kids took flight on a beautiful clear day! The seven aircraft and pilots did a phenomenal job getting their airplanes ready for a 9 AM launch. This included Hal in his 67 Mooney who explained to kids it rhythms with money, fighter pilot Jose in his 65 low rider Cherokee, John in his beautiful l straight tail Cessna 182, Judi in her cute little Cessna , Al in the swift RV7A, and pulling up the rear with tail draggers, Jason s 67 GCAA Citabria and Glenn in the Marquart Charger bi-plane, the hit of the cool crowd. To start off the morning with a bang, the TV crew from Good Day Sacramento arrived at the gate at 7 AM looking to broadcast live and tell the story of Young Eagles. Before I could even get a cup of coffee, the cameras were rolling. This is like 60 Minutes at your front door wanting to ask you questions. I turned the assignment over to Tim. He did a great job assisting the cute reporter into his Long EZ and closing the canopy. End of broadcast!

This being my first YE flight as the YE coordinator, I felt like a ticket agent at the Southwest boarding gate when the reservation system goes down. I have 40 kids and 40 parents who all want to board the next flight out of Placerville. I have all the boarding passes and the parents are looking for their tickets. Despite the rush in the terminal (hangar), everyone showed patience and the first flights (Group A) got on the roll at 9 AM. Group B, C and D marched to the east ramp where the first flights recovered and the next round of kids boarded. Many thanks to the Civil Air Patrol Cadets who escorted the kids to aircraft on the ramp, and crew of ground handlers lead by Wayne Campbell and Nat Prince, assisted by Rick Gaylord, Walter and Helen. The last flight was out the gate at 11:30 and was the only aborted mission. Judi taxied out with her Young Eagle and did her run up, the plane rocked and rolled slightly, and she returned to the ramp. Not a bad mag check, but a very nervous young girl. Log 0.1 for the record! Nearly all the families returned to the hangar picnic area for hot dogs, chips, Audrey s cookies and apple juice. Kids really like hot dogs and can eat more than the pilots. Thank you, Helen for making me a shortage list, MORE CATSUP, MORE HOT DOGS, MORE OF EVERYTHING! All in all, a great day.

OCTOBER 2018 The Hangtown Strobe Page 3 Fleet Week from the Fleet - by Al Herron Fleet Week for me has been an elusive goal. In the twenty-three years I ve lived in Northern California, I had never managed to attend. That changed this year, and in spectacular fashion. Our chapter president, Tim Sullivan, is a man of many interests. One of them is sailing. For most of us, that would probably mean buying a small used day sailor and luffing around Folsom Lake. Not Tim. Not one to do things by halves, Tim belongs to a sailing club in Sausalito and has earned the necessary certificates to captain large sailing vessels on San Francisco Bay. For Saturday of Fleet Week, Tim arranged a charter of the Laulea, a 42-foot Lagoon catamaran. By nine am Saturday, Tim and his wife Angela, and other chapter members Dale and Amy Kral, Rick Gaylord, Dan and Kim Stein, and myself and my wife Gail were gathered at the sailing school clubhouse and ready to go. We were all eager to board and get underway as there is a lot of competition for prime anchoring spots near Alcatraz Island from which to view the Fleet Week air show. However, we were still short one couple: Mark and Deanie Zeitlin were due to fly in to nearby Gnoss field in their Cozy canard, but had been delayed in their departure from Tehachapi by fog and low clouds. That s OK, we re pilots, we get it, hats off for good decision making! We were anxiously following their texted progress reports as they made their approach and then a quick Uber ride to the Marina; they arrived just as the cleaning crew announced the boat was ready to board. Forty-five minutes later we were anchored just off the west shore of Alcatraz, drinks and snacks at hand and ready to watch the show. Beautiful, bright clear day on the bay and couldn t ask for better. The only fly in the ointment was flies! Thousands of them had decided to vacation from their day jobs on Alcatraz and take a sea cruise on our boat! They were only a minor annoyance, however, and Tim & Kim enthusiastically set about on an eradication mission, merrily swiping and swatting all they could. Wasn t terribly effective, but most entertaining to watch.

Soon, the air show began. Performers included Sean. D. Tucker & Team Oracle, the Patriots jet team, the Navy Leap Frogs, fly-bys by a C-130 and United Airlines 777, U.S Coast helicopter rescue demonstrations, and of course, capping the show, the Blue Angels. We had front row seats, if by front row you mean sitting right in the middle of the stage during the performance. Several times one or more of the bright blue-and-yellow FA-18s would make tight turns around us, coming in low and fast just over the top of the Alcatraz prison buildings; we were right at the center of the arc they flew. When they made their iconic bomb burst maneuver, it was directly over our mast. The cruise back to port was briefly interrupted by Tim and first mate Bob (one of the sailing school members) stopping to rescue a boat cushion that had fallen off another boat, with Bob becoming soaked in the process. Dinner that night was at local restaurant named Fish, very good! Some of us left for home after, while others stayed aboard overnight (there are three nice cabins). We all met at Fred s the next morning and celebrated over a delicious breakfast before departing for home.

OCTOBER 2018 The Hangtown Strobe Page 4 We are holding a special pancake breakfast on November 3rd in memory of John Spencer. Our proceeds will be donated to Angel Flight in John s honor. Willard John Spencer November 28, September 4, 2018 November 3rd is the final Pancake Breakfast of the year bring your family and friends Proudly serving Starbucks Coffee!!! A special Thank you to Starbucks store in the Forklift Shopping Center, Cameron Park, for their generous donation of coffee and other supplies. They have supported us for over 10 years now. So, when you go in there, please thank the staff. Chapter member W. John Spencer, tragically perished in an accident while on a volunteer Angel Flight mission. Thankfully, his patient and passenger survived. Our chapter has made a donation to the Dachsund Rescue of Northern California in his memory. We Want Your Batteries! Hal is collecting batteries for recycling. We are no longer taking metal, please let people know to not drop off metal at the hangar. 1st Tuesday of the Month 7pm 8pm The EAA Hangar This month s meeting will be run by Rolf Konstad as Dick will be recovering from knee surgery.

My First Fly-In by Walter Brand My first fly-in really started out as a drive-in. Since our airplane only carries two passengers, it was decided my mom and I would be ground crew and bring in all the necessary camping gear. Driving to Columbia from Placerville takes about 2 hours and flying in our plane about 35 minutes. That is a big difference. When we arrived at Columbia Airport (O22) we had a little trouble finding the gate that would take us to the campground. After driving around in a circle and almost becoming dizzy we finally got accurate directions and selected a campsite. We met up with my dad and sister in the parking area along the grass strip where tow long colorful rows of Bellanca s and a few other type aircraft made for a beautiful display. We roamed along the rows of planes enjoying the many designs and meeting new pilots along the way. Back at camp the sounds of laughter could be heard throughout and the occasional ring of the horseshoe game being played. A few more planes rolled in just in time for dinner. At the dinner hall, we were treated to a wonderful spaghetti and salad feed. After dinner, a couple of gentlemen came over to chat and introduce themselves. They inquired what kind of plane we had flown in for the event. It was quickly learned that one of them had just purchased a kit like our Citabria. His face lit up and he really wanted to have a look at our plane. He asked my dad a ton of questions. Then he told us he owned the biplane and at that moment turned to ask me if I had ever done any aerobatics in our plane. I told him we hadn t yet but that I had always wanted to perform a loop. He confirmed with me that I don t get motion sickness and the next thing I knew, I was being invited to fly with him early in the morning. At 6:30 am sharp I found myself harnessed in the front seat of the biplane. As we parted the cold morning mist, I knew I was destined for a joy ride. The engine roared. The grass was unearthed. The trees shrank below the wings as the Starduster II defeated gravity. Once we climbed to pattern altitude, I asked if we could make a low pass for dawn patrol. The pilot replied with a big YES so we remained in the pattern, turned base to final and swooped down with full power making plenty of noise to wake the people in camp then pulled up nicely at the end of the runway for that lovely g-force feeling. Later when we were miles from the airport and at a safe altitude, we began some aerobatic maneuvers. The first maneuver was a smooth roll which was really exciting and then we did a 4 point roll which was even better. We also did a loop. The thrilling part of the loop was when you feel weightlessness as you are upside down looking straight off the wing, thousands of feet down at the ground and praying your harness holds! After we were back on the ground, I gave many thanks to the pilot for sharing this amazing experience of flight with me. I skipped back to camp thinking this was the best fly-in/drive-in ever!
