Use parking lot 2 or 3. The formal meeting will start at 7:00 PM, but please join us at 6:30 for some social time along with Scotties Famous Pizza. John Garabedian has lined up three topics this month covering KHYA, Apollo-8 and ADS-B... BARNSTABLE AIRPORT 2014 UPDATE The meeting will begin with an update on the evolution and developments at Barnstable Municipal Boardman-Polando Field (or as we pilots call it, "Hyannis Airport"). Airport Manager Bud Breault will review the first full year of operation after construction of the new $40 million dollar terminal and new FAA Control tower, and the initiation of non-stop JetBlue service to New York's Kennedy Airport.
2 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM RACE TO THE MOON On Christmas Eve, 1968, one of the largest audience in television history tuned in to an extraordinary sight, a live telecast of the moon's surface as seen from Apollo 8, the first manned space flight to leave Earth's gravitational pull and orbit the moon. The astronauts only had four months to prepare for the risky lunar orbit. Catastrophic failure would have brought a halt to the late President Kennedy's goal of putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
3 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM CAPA will present the story of Apollo 8 from a PBS "American Experience" program at our January 7th meeting. ADS-B SIMPLIFIED!! EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW IN A NUTSHELL. In four years, by December 31, 2019, all aircraft flying below 18,000 feet in Class B, C, or D airspace must be equipped to transmit ADS-B signals or they will be in violation of the FARs. What is ADS-B "in" and ADS-B "out", and how do you implement it in your aircraft? What is the least expensive way to comply? What kind of flying can you do if you fail to install it? We will have the simple answers at the January 7th CAPA meeting, and expect Garmin's Michael Kerrigan to present the Garmin ADS-B Academy and new in-flight weather and navigation solutions. ADS-B technology allows air traffic
4 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM controllers to see traffic with more precision than ever before, and you will leave the meeting with a full understanding of this revolutionary change in air traffic avoidance. Holiday Party Wrap-Up CAPA's Holiday Party on December 15 was the largest ever, with 46 members and friends in attendance. Everyone was so busy socializing that we didn't remember to take pictures of the event! Oh well - members shared plenty of photos to entertain us during dessert. Below is one picture from each of the 10 presenters. At left, Bob Bisbee caught this inspiring photo of an aspiring pilot Below, Kurt Thorup showed an exceptional landing shot of this 1960 Cessna 150
5 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM Above, Rae Willis snapped this "Hello Kitty" AOPA visitor in front of his Mooney who'd just had enough of airplanes at the end of the day! Also, Sherry Grobstein in front of her newly acquired Cessna Hawk XP.
6 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM Left, John Garabedian introduced this enthusiastic young man to the thrill of aviation. Below, Bruce Gordon captured The Mills before a breakfast fly out in September.
7 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM At right, Lucy Young likes to fly planes slightly larger than the average CAPA bird. Below, Rich Dupee executes the first landing of his freshly built RV-12 at Falmouth. Below left, Olga Mitchell and crew on their trip out to Oshkosh this summer. At right is Sue Lin handling the controls of one of those fancy Cirrus aircraft.
8 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM Mourning Don Varnum Rae Willis sent over this obituary in memory of Don Varnum, who died just after Thanksgiving. He will be fondly remembered by many CAPA and EAA 498 members...
9 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM CAPA and "Above the Clouds" by Jeff Bauer This past year Gary Oberstein made a presentation at CAPA regarding a relatively new organization in Boston called "Above the Clouds (ATC)". In spite of the very poor weather he was very warmly received that evening. I am on the Board of Directors for ATC and we are constantly in search of pilots to fly our kids in the Boston airspace. Take a look at the following article and see if you want to become a "Dream Pilot". Above the Clouds is an organization who's mission is to bring joy and hope to seriously ill, disabled and underprivileged children. Many existing in-hospital programs (involving music and art, for example) are designed to alleviate the tedium of long hospital stays and difficult medical treatments and procedures. Above the Clouds complements these activities with a different approach that delivers a unique kind of medicine. These children are called "Dream Flyers". These Dream Flyers are able to anticipate a joyful experience on Flight Day and feel hopeful just when things might seem hopeless. On Flight Day, the Dream Flyer and his or her family and friends are welcomed to Norwood Airport by Above the Clouds greeters with signs and balloons. Before the flight, the Dream Flyer and his or her family receive a tour of the flight tower and participate in an exciting pre-flight briefing with the volunteer pilot. As flight time approaches, the Dream Flyer is presented with his or her own official Above the Clouds flight jacket and aviator sunglasses. Sitting in the copilot s seat, the Dream Flyer has a chance to assist the pilot in flying the plane. This flight often involves flying over their home, down the Charles, and of course over Fenway. Above the Clouds also has a second program called "The Cadet Flyers Program." The Cadet Flyers Program is a direct response to the growing number of young people who are either falling through the cracks at school or are involved with social service agencies due to poverty issues or difficult home situations. Above the Clouds steps in to provide that missing motivational tool the coolness of flight and the allure of learning to fly an airplane. Above the Clouds uniquely provides this programming on a cost-free basis for teens in need.
10 of 11 1/20/2015 7:10 PM Above the Clouds has grown dramatically since it's founding two years ago by Gary Oberstein. They have conducted Fifty "Dream Flights" just this past season. They also have six children currently in their "Cadet Flyer" program. If you would like to become a Dream Pilot please contact me at jbbuckaroo@gmail.com or The rewards are enormous! Jeff Living in the Age of Airplanes John Garabedian learned that National Geographic is going to release a documentary movie "Living in the Age of Airplanes" this April. He sent along this link to the trailer. You can both get a preview and sign up for updates on the film. Latest FAA Safety Briefing The FAA recently published its November/December issue. It's a regular a magazine, this one covering all sorts of topics related to winter flying. If you find its cover page enticing, you can take a look at it here.
