1 Volume 30 Issue 1 2nd Place McKillop Award 1996 & 1999 Jan PREZ SEZ By Tim Sullivan Happy new year everyone! I hope everyone faired the holidays well. December, it seems, came and went so quickly with fair weather for flying and being outside. Placerville Main Street seemed to be busy everyday with locals and visitor enjoying our area. I could not help but notice that during those cobalt blue calm days, lots of folks were flying. As aviators we tend to look up a lot when we hear an aircraft passing by. We ask ourselves, what kind of plane is that? It that someone I know? Based on the direction of flight we sometimes speculate where they are going. Auburn for lunch, the Bay Area and other places we as aviators are so lucky to travel to by air. Face it, we have the aviation bug and it s very strong in our chapter. As your newly elected president I want to thank you for trusting me to help lead the chapter through it s 44th year. Also I want to thank Past President Rob Bulaga for his enthusiasm and dedication these last two years. I ve sat on the board many times in the past and I know that as a president your job can be a real joy with a great board, which we have. Most of all the members at 512 are all enthusiastic about aviation and are dedicated to sharing and preserving the heritage of a sport they love. This year I would like to ask each and every member to share our aviation world with someone. Whether it be bringing them to the airport for a chapter meeting or special event, sitting on one of the benches watching the planes come and go, or maybe a ride for lunch. This simple gesture could be a pivotal moment for someone else to get The Bug Happy New Year! I received a letter from the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) acknowledging Chapter 512 s donation toward the restoration and operating expenses of the C-47 That s All, Brother (lead aircraft of the Normandy invasion). 5 JANUARY 2018 The Hangtown Strobe Page 4 Safety, it s a big area to talk about, how about some new topics or even a visit to an oldie! Over 50 years ago 1966 couldn t be that far back could it? Well it was a good time anyhow, single again what to do with my spare time. Why not take up flying. A good friend suggested an inexpensive (cheap) flying club at Santa Monica, SMO. It s was a busy place but you can learn a lot more, and how to deal with busy airspace. First flight with an instructor, first words out of his mouth were keep up your scan, look outside more than you look inside. Off we launched in the mighty Cessna 140 with its 85 horse power, you could just make the pattern altitude of 1,000 feet as you reached down wind mid-field to chop the power and glide down for the landing, oh wait the tower says you are #5 or 10, or even 14 for landing. Better keep an eye out for those many other aircraft! So, from the first 2 minutes of my flying it was LOOK for airplanes and NEVER DON T LOOK OUT! A few years later and working on the instrument rating it became new words of wisdom. The radar controller will point out any traffic near-by at some o clock position and if in VFR conditions search hi and low to spot the other traffic, then acknowledge back that you see it you did see all of them, didn t you? Soon after things got even better, Transponders with mode C encoding altimeters came along. Well let me tell you it just can t get any better than that can it? Now the controller can give you the other planes relative bearing and tell you to look above or below to find that other guy. So for many years I flew looking out in VFR and relying on the radar controllers on many of my flights, using flight following as often as I could and feeling pretty good about the old see and be seen concept. Never had an encounter of the worst kind, and except for in the pattern at Oshkosh ware things do get interesting, all has been good. About a month after OSH this year Fred and I added the latest and greatest to our Skylane RG the ADSB in and out Transponder system. This is the greatest thing since my first flight when the tower said to look for the other planes in the pattern and follow. Now I could spend all day looking at the GPS 530W the 2 I-pads, & 1 I-phone we fly with, so much more information, so many other airplanes out there. At times there are more than 10 in range that could be a factor to our flight. I never knew so many planes are out there! In conclusion I do believe in ADSB it s in and out benefits are life savers. and NEVER DON T LOOK OUT! And yes, I have been # 14 in the pattern at SMO on more than one occasion! Dick Wampach is a pilot ATP & CFII, A/P mechanic with Inspection Authorization Aviation helps attack historic California wildfires Months into a record outbreak of California wildfires that have resulted from the worst fire conditions the state has seen in decades, aerial assaults continue, and general aviation airports including one closed by a temporary flight restriction are playing key support roles in the attack. 6 JANUARY 2018 The Hangtown Strobe Page 5 Cherished Homebuilt Helps Spread Spirit of Aviation January 10, 2018 By Ti Windisch Glenn Gordon, EAA , did not just buy a nice looking biplane when he purchased his 1982 Marquart MA-5 Charger. Glenn bought himself a champion. His Charger was originally constructed by Remo Galeazzi, EAA Remo was known for being an affable friend, a humorous and detailed writer, and a skilled builder. He spent nearly 10 years on his Charger, and wrote in Sport Aviation ( Chicken House Chargers, June 1985) that he never would have even started the beautiful biplane were it not for Jim Smith. Jim encouraged Remo to join him in the endeavor, and the two of them ordered Charger plans from the designer, Ed Marquart, around the same time. Remo often consulted Jim throughout the early days of the build, which eventually led to the two of them renting out an old chicken coop once their projects became too much for their houses (or wives) to deal with anymore. The two builders worked mere feet from one another, and Remo never failed to acknowledge how important Jim s help was throughout the build, especially when Jim moved a bit ahead of Remo on his Charger. Remo could look beside him and see what the next step should look like. Jim was so important to Remo that he called him his angel when it came to the airplane build. The two brought their exquisite Marquart builds to Oshkosh in 1982, and came home with some delicious validation when Jim s was named the 1982 Plansbuilt Grand Champion. When Remo returned some five years later, he too received the honor of being the Plansbuilt Grand Champion. That chicken coop ended up producing a pair of award-winning aircraft!
