2 NOTE: A reminder that the Thursday morning coffee is still being held in the EAA Falcon Warbirds Hangar. The Chapter 228 socials have resumed with dinner at Vito's Italian restaurant at 4 pm on the Southeast corner of McKellips and Lindsay Roads. The socials are scheduled for the 2nd Saturday evening of the month. EAA Chapter 228 Falcons Membership Meeting Minutes Summary November 25, 2014 The November meeting of the Falcons was held at the Commemorative Air Force hangar at Falcon field, Mesa, AZ. The meeting was opened at 7:05 PM by President Todd Nuttall. There were 29 members and guests in attendance. Announcements: Todd asked for guests/new members to introduce themselves. Welcome to Craig and Sheri Judd. Craig just retired from Aerojet-Rocketdyne and owns a Stearman. Todd announced the candidates for 2015 and asked for someone to fill the open slot for Secretary. Philip Bucalew volunteered to fill the open Secretary position. Since there is only one candidate for each position, Todd moved that the slate be accepted by acclamation. Andy Elliott gave a summary of the November 1 st YE event with the Boy Scouts and discussed the things that didn't go as well as planned. There were several scouts that were above the age limit for YE flights and/or had participated in the YE program at least once before. Despite a prior briefing with the tower, the controller on duty was not aware of our procedures and reporting points. This caused departure and arrival delays. If we continue to due this event with the scouts, Andy proposed that we tell the scout leaders to screen the kids better and emphasize quality as oppose to quantity. That means one kid flown at a time. He will also check with the tower personnel the day of the event and confirm that they have the briefing package. We will follow similar procedures for the FFZ open house on March 7, Andy continued with this months safety briefing on cold weather operations. He discussed flight planning with emphasis on awareness of the weather at the departure, enroute and final destination. Check NOTAMs and if possible talk to someone at the destination airport to get a first hand report of conditions. The meeting concluded with another EAA Chapter Video. This video reviewed actions the EAA is taking to assist home builders and changes in the staffing. There was a segment on Dick Cole's trip to AirVenture in a B-25. Dick, at 98 years old, is one of the four survivors of the Doolittle raid on Tokyo during WW2 and was Doolittle's copilot. The video concluded with a profile of Jim Benson. Jim flies a Safari helicopter and plays the banjo. He's pretty darn good at jamming! The meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM. Respectively submitted Mike Cycon, Treasurer NOTE: The Super Bowl and Pro Bowl football games will soon be here, and gain, the Phoenix area airports are anticipating a crush of corporate jet traffic bringing people in for the games. You can expect the ramps and airspace around Phoenix to get pretty congested and it s suggested that, unless it s necessary, not flying IFR the weekend of, and the following Monday morning after the two games. A link to the TFR is; n o t i c e s / / J a n / _Advisory_Super_Bowl_XLIX_amd_1.pdf 2015 Cactus Fly In Be sure to mark your calendars; The Classic Airplane Association of Arizona is planning for their 57th. annual Cactus Fly-In on March 6 & 7, 2015 at the Casa Grande Municipal Airport. This year s event will be featuring the historic Aeronca Airplanes. If you own an older airplane or a historic

3 aircraft, you are very much encouraged to fly it in for the event. It s a great fly-in, and attending is like taking a step back in time in seeing some of the fantastically restored airplanes. ARIZONA 2014 ACCIDENT SYNOPSIS The year 2014 ended with a total of 61 NTSB reported aircraft accidents occurring in the state of Arizona. In the reporting of this number of accidents, keep in mind that an incident such as a gear up landing, which can be very financially devastating, when no one was injured or structural damage as defined by the NTSB did not occur, these incidents are not included in this number. Of these accidents; 37! Were Certified Powered Fixed Wing Aircraft 10! Were Experimental Fixed Wing Aircraft 9! Were Rotor Wing Aircraft 2! Were Gliders 3! Were Balloons FLY IN BREAKFAST VENUES The first Saturday of the month fly in breakfast at Coolidge Municipal Airport (P08) On the second Saturday of the month, the Ryan Field (RYN) fly in buffet breakfast. Location is between the Restaurant and the Fuel Pits. Time; 8:00 to 11:00 am The Falcon EAA Warbirds Squadron Breakfast on the third Saturday. Breakfast will be served from 7:00 to 11:00 AM. The third Saturday of the month there is a fly in breakfast at Benson (E95) at Southwest Aviation. (Often there have been very special fuel prices for breakfast attendees.) The last Saturday of the month there is a fly in breakfast at Casa Grande Municipal Airport (CGZ) that runs from 7:00 am until 10:00 The breakfast is served inside the terminal building. Of the people that were involved in these reported accidents; Unfortunately there were 16 fatalities, 8 received serious injuries, 22 received minor injuries, and 74 persons involved were uninjured. In 2015 we need to do all we can to bring ALL these numbers down! Especially the the fatalities. Listen to the Safety Briefings Andy gives and bring the experimental numbers down. Otherwise, it will run for 3 months as submitted then it will be removed. HELP NEEDED Chapter member, Shawn Burns would like to know if anyone would be willing to volunteer time and skills to help drive/buck rivets on the wing of his Bearhawk project. The rest of the aircraft kit arrived recently and he is now in need of a minimum 20' x 20' space in which to continue the project to completion.
