5 At our gathering on August 19 th we will have a representative from Ride for Kids ; this ride is Sunday, August 26 th. At our gathering we will make plans on where to meet and when to leave. Wing Ding: Lou & I left on Sunday, July 1 st, stayed Sunday night & Monday night with our son in Louisville, KY. We took the trike on our trailer. Tuesday, we went on to Fort Wayne, IN for the rally. Tony/Rita, Ron/Bev rode their trikes and went a different route. Every day we were gone it was 100 plus degrees. Lou & I rode very little. It is not that much fun to ride when it is over 100 degrees. One day while we were there, a storm came up that knocked over bikes at the rally, broke some windshields, and tore off all kind up things on the rally grounds. Some said we had 60 mph winds. July 29 th, Ron, Lou & I traveled to New London for the Wings over NC planning session. After a good lunch, some of us went to the Cabarrus Arena to look the place over. I think you will be happy with what they have to offer us. Our work assignment for the rally is the Silent Auction from 10-2 on Saturday. We need everyone that is going to the rally to be there for this assignment, this is what we get paid for. Our chapter ride to Steak & Shake was Saturday, August 11 th. Only Ted/Med, Lou /I and Ron went on this ride. Where is everyone? Ron rode his trike, the rest of us took our cars. See you at our gathering Sunday. Johnny & Lou Perry NC 02 Chapter Directors Barb? 6 In 2009 at Ride for Kids we became acquainted with a young red-headed girl named Sarah who has a brain tumor. Sarah has traveled several times to a clinic in Florida for treatments. We are looking forward to seeing Sarah again this year. The opportunity to participate in the Ride for Kids with Brain Tumors makes owning our motorcycles worthwhile. It only costs $35 per motorcycle to ride for this cause. (Just think of all the money we spend on chrome, etc in comparison with what our small donations can do for these children.) It s always a beautiful ride, we get to meet some the kids who have benefited from these rides, and a free lunch is provided. You don t have to ride on August 26 th to make a donation. If you can t attend, we will be happy to take your donation with us to Asheville. (And we can bring you back a donation form for your taxes.) Ron & Bev Chapman ACDs and NC 02 Chapter Couple FROM EVAN PARTON: I do not ask many for much. This is the one time I will ask for your help. I will be again riding, and for the first time, working the "Ride for Kids" in Asheville, NC on Aug. 26, I am asking for your help with a very small donation of $5.00 only. Because if I can get you all to donate $5.00 that small $5.00 will add up real quick to make a large donation towards the research for Brain Tumors. If you can help, this is a secure site that you can make your donation to this cause. Thanks in advance for your help with this cause. kids?utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=share&utm_source=at-facebook&utm_content=eua#.t6x9x- V8CWM.facebook Evan Parton NC District Membership Enhancement Coordinators
7 The Adventures of Whiskers & Claire Sipe On July 11, we (4 & 6 year old grandkids and Whiskers ) left home pulling a 26' camper, and picked up Claire at work at about 5:30 pm and headed for Virginia Beach. We camped for the night in Emporia, VA about 255 miles into trip. The next morning we drove the 100 miles to Virginia Beach. My daughter, Marie, and her husband from Delaware visited us at the campground on Thursday and Friday. On Friday they picked up the 2 grandkids and took them 160 miles to their home in Delaware. Claire and I hung around Virginia Beach till Tuesday, July 17. While the kids were gone, we ate at some good restaurants, pedaled a 2 person surry on the boardwalk, drove across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, and visited the Military Aviation Museum. The museum was privately owned. It had cars, motorcycles, captured German war vehicles, and it had planes from WW I - Vietnam. All the planes are in working order and are flown at least once a year! Most are the real deal, and there are a few that are reproductions from original plans. They actually rebuild and repair old planes on site. The kids were brought back to us at about 11 am on July 17, and we headed home pulling the camper the 350 miles back home. The 4 & 6 year old traveled about 500 miles that day and did just fine. While we were camped at Virginia Beach:... On Sunday I decided to go parasailing. Got on a boat with a daughter/father and 3 high school girls. Father/daughter went first. 3 girls went next. Then...me. I went up really high...floated smoothly in the air...got a little windy just before I was going to be brought down. I had said I wanted to be dipped in the ocean as I came in. The wind wouldn't let the chute down even though the boat was put in reverse...oh...did I mention we were about 1 and a half miles out in the Atlantic Ocean. Just after I landed back on the boat...the engine overheated and the captain had to shut 'er down. Now we are stranded a mile and a half out in the ocean. The captain informed me that if it had happened 2 minutes earlier...they would have had to cut the line going to the chute with me on it. In the wind I would have floated a while...came down...and someone would have had to deflate the chute unless I could get disconnected before it drug me across the ocean. He tried to restart the engine...no luck. He called in to shore, and the guy at the dock said he would come out on a jet ski and tow us ashore by tying a line to the big boat we were in. The guy finally arrived and started towing. Just before we got to the entrance to the dock inlet...the rope broke...the inlet was flanked on both sides by rocks with waves crashing on them. They reattached another rope, and the guy on the jet ski towed us the rest of the way though the narrow inlet amongst big yachts coming out...and weaved through the docks.
8 RIDER EDUCATION Our Motto... "Safety is for Life" Dress To Impress I hope everyone made it back from Wing Ding safe and sound. I know ya ll had a great time. I also heard that it was hot up there. Hopefully everyone stayed hydrated. Since it is extra warm I thought I would tackle the subject of dressing. How to stay comfortable on the bike is one thing that is upmost on our minds. I continue to see a wide variety of dress styles on bikes and it always makes me wonder what if. What if you didn t see the stones on the road? What if there is some sand in the corner? What if the vehicle ahead is dropping oil? What if, what if, what if??????? The dangers out there are great and many. When we get on the bike we know we are going to be so much more aware of everything that is around us. Now throw in the other drivers and we have even more danger. We have to dress to impress. Every time we put on clothes we dress to impress. Just look around on a Sunday morning at church. That can be impressive. Go out for dinner and we dress to impress. I don t care if we wear blue jeans and boots and cap, we dress to impress. No one dresses to be repulsive. (Unless you are a teenager.) We like that distinction of being our own person. There is nothing wrong with this idea. When we go for a ride, impressing should be the last thing that concerns us. What we wear then may make the difference on how we look on Sunday morning or the dinner date with your spouse or friend. Road rash down our arms or hands is just the beginning of repulsiveness. The list could be very great. It s too hot is the most often excuse. I want some sun is another. My favorite one is I m just going down the road a couple miles. Maybe a shorter ride should be considered. Travel in the morning and sightsee in the afternoon. Plan to take more breaks. There are all kind of options to not sweltering on the bike. Let the bike sit and take the car. I know that sounds counter to what we like to do. I hope this will get you to think a little more about how to handle the heat on the bike. Maybe, though, it might let you be impressively dressed when you are doing some other activities. Now enjoy what is fun. Just don t be thoughtless. Enjoy the Ride. Our Mission...
