Our North Chagrin ride turned out great even though I got off to a rough start. Michelle Crew was picking me up on the corner of Remsen and Medina Line which meant I had to walk Sierra down the road a short way. As I left my driveway Sunny started calling to her so she pranced down to the corner. Michelle opened her trailer and it is a slant load. Sierra likes to squeal and kick out once when she greets another horse on a trailer. Every time I put my hands up to tie her she tried to reach her nose over to Jetteye. I would pull her head down and she would back off the trailer. After the third try I decided to save Michelle s trailer from being dented and went to see what Kathy Cockfield s trailer was. Another slant load, and after one try I said I was going home to get my own trailer. By this time Sierra looked and acted like a wild stallion snorting, screaming, prancing and running around me in circles all the way down the road. About half way down my drive I decided not to take her. I called Michelle and told her to come get me -- I was taking Sunny who would be no problem on her trailer. Martha Ross and Pat Hennrick rode with us. Martha had looked at the map and then given it to Raydeen Ryden who was waiting for Jim Brown and Dory Crossfield who were on their way with a horse for her. They thought they would be another hour, so we went on. Later Raydeen said they arrived only about 20 minutes later and they had a great ride also. Our next Day Ride is on July 8 at Bedford. Sierra should be good and tired by then because we will have finished our 5 day trip to Virginia and camping at Mohican over the July 4 th weekend with Wayne OHC. 2 Membership News Welcome newest 2017 members: Susan and Art Busch, Marietta Tromp (from Summit chapter) and Kim Matteson, Patricia Herrick and Catherine Matonis (from Cuyahoga)! Thanks for becoming a part of Medina OHC and we hope you can join us at our events. Our meetings are the first Wednesday of the month (except August) and are always fun and informative. This promises to be a busy summer we urge you to be a part of it. And thanks to all renewed members! We appreciate all your support. Co-President s Message 6-17 aka Jack s Stall Prize and I are having a ball out on trail this year. We are getting in a lot more miles than we could last year. He is most content to plug along at his 6 MPH walk. His walk does cover a lot of ground. I enjoyed volunteering at the All American Youth Horse Show in May. It was at the Ohio Expo Center at the state fairgrounds in Columbus. Larry Bell, a true friend of MOHC came by on Saturday and worked the entire day from 8:00 in the morning until whenever the show ended for the day (probably about 9:00 PM). He has volunteered at the show for several years. National Trails Day was a nice day. MOHC worked on the Salt Run Trail. I think that everyone enjoyed the work. The park probably had over 100 volunteers for the event. When I was riding Friday afternoon (6-2-17) on the Outer Wetmore/Langes Loop I could see that the park has been busy clearing downed trees, but they still have quite a few left to do. I also saw two really nice turnpikes put in by the Boy Scouts on the part of Wetmore that parallels Quick Road. There are several swales in that section that need to be cleaned up to help get the water off the trail. The swales really work and make for much drier trails. I received this from Kim Norley, the park landscape architect. Pat, Jack & Mike, We are in the process of trying to manage our congestion around the park. One of the targeted areas is Boston. As you know, the Boston Trailhead is overflow parking for the area. On the weekends, cars fill the overflow and are pulling out in several areas on Boston Mills Road creating some unsafe exits. You all have mentioned it's hard to find trailer spaces on weekends with cars parking everywhere. We are looking to control parking at the trailhead to accommodate the volume of cars we are seeing in an orderly manner. We will be changing the parking layout at the trailhead removing the pull-thru spaces. Trailers can still park in the trailhead if it is not full, similar to parking at Everett Covered Bridge, or in the RV area on the NW corner of Riverview & Boston Mills. We hope you understand our safety concerns in managing the large volume of visitors to the area and why we are changing the Trailhead layout. 3 Jack s Stall continued: The June monthly meeting was our ice cream social meeting. Karen Knuth took charge of the ice cream part of the meeting. We all had a good time. It was a good meeting. The details of the State Ride/Pig Roast are falling into place. Rosemary Young is taking the reservations this year, Molly is the general manager and I will be taking care of the parking. It takes a lot of volunteers donating a lot of time to make this a great event. Thank you in advance everyone. Please get your reservations for the State Ride/Pig Roast in to Rosemary ASAP. We usually fill Robinson Field with rigs and end up turning people away. You don t want to get left out if you intend to camp. Of course, you are welcome to come to dinner on Saturday evening whether you camp or not. It is a fun evening. The Saturday day rides have been going very well. I think that we will have several members complete the Cleveland Metro Parks 100 mile End to End Celebration Ride. The next ride is in Bedford Reservation on July 8 th. We will have a slow ride and a not so slow ride. Something for everyone. Check the website and Facebook for more details as the ride approaches. On a serious note, I would love to see more members and guests at our monthly business meetings. I have asked this question several times over the last several years. What kinds of activities at the meetings would entice you come to the business meetings? Would you like to have more speakers and or hands on programs? Would you like to have more potlucks? Would you like a different location, perhaps a restaurant or something like that? If you have any ideas that you would like to see implemented please contact any of the officers and we will see what we can do. We are a club of 120 or so members. It would be nice if more than 20 members were helping drive the club. This is your club, the officers need your input and guidance to help make the club relevant to all members. A nominating committee has been formed to field a slate of officer candidates for the election at the November meeting. If you are interested in running for an office please contact Molly Eastwood. WETMORE TRAILHEAD I was roaming around the park last week looking for a few photos for my where is it feature. I stopped by Wetmore Trailhead and I was appalled by the amount of manure in the parking lot. Please clean up after your horse before you leave the trailhead. Also, if you would be so kind as to pick up some of the trash left behind by inconsiderate riders you will make the lot look a more attractive and will enhance our standing with the park. Show your chapter spirit by sporting one of these beauties! I also have a good assortment of denim shirts, ladies t-shirts and a few heavy hoodies at greatly reduced prices. 4 Where Are They?? Find the answers in this newsletter State Ride and Auction Our fabulous state ride and pig roast is only 3 months away. The silent auction will be held on the afternoon of Saturday August 19. We need donations and we take nearly anything! It can be new, unused, gently used or old and still useful or pretty. It does not have to be horse-related. I ve been asking my friends for items for years and they are always glad to give me things they don t use or never used or those great deals they got on Home Shopping Network that they had no idea what to do with once they got them. Folks love used tack, blankets, bits, saddles, leads, etc. But they also love that bottle of wine Aunt Sarah got you from upstate New York, or those Longaberger baskets that you just had to have and now take up an entire room. If you own a business consider donating a gift card or gift basket of products. It s a great way to promote your business. 5 TRAIL PARTY REPORTS MAY 13, 2017 Our volunteers gathered at 8:30 am at Covered Bridge Parking Lot. The project was to complete clearing leaves off trails and out of ditches and culverts. Peggy Costic and Bonnie Bennington got a ride over to where the Valley Trail comes up to the Ohio Turnpike. They picked up their mighty leaf blowers and started on the Valley Trail there heading south. Talia Stewart and Hannah Stein, after transporting those two to their starting place drove to Pine Lane trailhead on 303 where they fired up their leaf blowers and headed north on the Valley Trail. Patricia cleared drainages and debris and repaired several eroded areas on the hills of that trail. It was a beautiful sunny spring day and when those from the north arrived down at the creek crossing, all took a break and had a chance to view the area where the 48 foot bridge that had been at that crossing, made it s trip downstream around three curves of the stream, and came to rest. The group viewed a video made by Mike Andrea of the beautiful Shire mare named Jazz, along with her owner, Todd Reidel, bringing the bridge planks back to be stacked by the trail. Patricia was one of the ones at the site when Jazz was on the job and has the video in her phone. From there, the group hiked back to the trailhead and on to lunch! Greg Monsanty and Chris Stein went over and completed clearing leaves on Langes, Tabletop and the part of Wetmore that had not gotten done. The others, Rosemary Young, Louise Harting, Dianna Weaver and Jim Weaver, Mike Andrea and grandson, Chase, Cheryl Hess and Molly Eastwood, took care of the leaves and ditches on Perkins. Wayne Crouse went over to Wetmore and cleared some fallen tree branches as well as opened up some clogged drainages. It was an awesome turnout of our superstar volunteers. Kristen, again with the park for the season, took care of providing our folks with tools and fuel and whatever else we needed to get the job done. Of course, at lunch time, our club caterer, Karen Knuth, appeared with a fine meal of pizza, salad, cookies, fruit and even a birthday cake for Molly, who had to leave, so someone saved a small piece for her. Our next session is June 3, when many of our volunteers will be out helping the Park on National Trails Day. We most likely will be on Salt Run Trail. This annual event affords many people to give their time to find out keeping our trails in good shape is lots of fun. This runs from 10 am to 1pm after which, the Conservancy provides lunch for all volunteers. The meeting place is Virginia Kendall Park on Truxell Road. Mother Nature has been busy rearranging things on and around our horse trails! Our friends at the Park continue doing a great job taking care of removing fallen trees and retrieving small bridges that migrate downstream.

6 As ever, our superstars on the project always have a fun time, and enjoy the experience of making a difference! NATIONAL TRAILS DAY JUNE 3, 2017 The National Park, along with the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, puts on each year a big event that draws many people, individuals and groups from all around the area. The Park picked out four trails for the volunteers to help improve. Although none of the selected trails were horse trails, our volunteers have a long history of helping out where and when we can! Our volunteers included Rosemary Young, Dianna Weaver, Jim Weaver, Wayne Crouse, Molly Eastwood, Sheila Haury, Randy Haury, Jack Weese, Linda Weese and Patricia Vance. Our project was on Salt Run Trail. Repairs were needed on this beautiful trail in the area going west from Pine Hollow trailhead. The Park had staged material at the locations and the volunteers were kept busy transporting the material to the project site to make the needed improvements. Salt Run trail goes through an exceptionally beautiful area of the park. It is a loop, about three miles, with a short cut if you prefer, and goes over to Virginia Kendall trail as well. Our group shoveled trail mix and created swales for drainage. At about 1pm, it was quitting time. Most of our group got a ride back to Virginia Kendall in the back of Patricia s toy truck (the mighty Dodge Ram 2500) Back at Virginia Kendall, the Conservancy provided lunch for all volunteers and everyone was visiting, talking about their projects and having a great time. After lunch, some of our park people were demonstrating some of the work they do, such as demonstrating skills needed to use chain saws in cutting fallen trees, these are definitely NOT fun toys to play with! And, Mother Nature provided beautiful weather, sunny, temp just right! Our next trail party will be on July 15 Remember, if you see any problem on the trails that need attention, let one of your trail committee know. Patricia A. 8 DAY RIDES 2017 All of the rides are located in the Cleveland Metro Parks Reservations to help support the 100 mile End to End Ride. July 8 Bedford Reservation, Jack s Place Sections K-L-M-N to Richmond Road miles out and back. Jack s Place to Frazee House K-J out and back 8 miles or to Station Road (I) 14.4 miles out and back. Jack s Place Trailhead is on Button Road just before Hemlock Creek picnic area at the intersection of Dunham and Tinkers Creek Road. Slower ride at 10:00 AM, Faster ride at 11:00 AM. Trailgait lunch after the ride. September 23 Mill Stream Wallace Lake in Berea to the Meadow s Trailhead in Brecksville. Details TBA October 7 South Chagrin Meet at the Polo Field. Free camping for registered End To End riders. This is Cuyahoga County s OHC State Ride and End to End party weekend. November 11 Brecksville Reservation Meadows to Station Road Details TBA Answer to Where Is It The first photo is the house by Wetmore Trailhead viewed from the parking lot. The second photo is not visible from the bridle trail. It is the old Case tractor that used to power a sawmill off of the Wetmore 4-Mile Loop. You have to get off of your horse to get to it. If you are doing Wetmore in a counter clockwise direction, after you pass the junction of Langes Run, keep going and pass by the Table Top Trail keep going and after a bit you will see some orange stakes (2 or 3) grouped together on the right side of the trail. The tractor is 2 or 3 hundred yards off in the woods more or less perpendicular to the trail. It is becoming quite overgrown and is a bit hard to see. It is a pretty easy walk. I doubt that many people know that the old tractor remains are back there. Karen Beres Update Karen Beres here. We need to do our very best in recording and reporting our miles and saddle hours to ensure we are seen as a major stakeholder in the Cuyahoga Valley trails. Our unique relationship with CVNP goes back thirty years. Since 1986, Medina Ohio Horseman s Council (MOHC) members have helped fund, build and maintain the horse trails in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. As other organizations are increasing their involvement in the park this is the main way we can demonstrate how important these trails are for us and other northeast Ohio equestrians. 14 Please join the fun! Register for the Emerald Necklace End to End 100 Mile trail ride. Help celebrate Cleveland Metroparks Centennial Year with this ride that will make history. Ride on your own at your own pace or with a group. Trail log is not due till December 15. Register for prizes and completion awards! We are at 221 from 21 counties registered riders. Can we make it 300? There is still plenty of time to do the ride. Join Cuyahoga Chapter on Friday, June 23 at Rocky River Reservation, Lewis Show Ring for camping that night and on Saturday, June 24 we will ride the reservation completing 16 miles of trail with a lunch break mid way. (Ride out at 10:30) Even if you don t camp please stop by and also join us for the ride on Saturday. Bring a lunch and something to share.
