For all other Prices contact: Jack Weese PRESIDENT S MESSAGE ~ AKA Jack s Stall ~ Jack Weese 5/2013 May 4, 2012 was the first of the MOHC Fun and Fellowship Rides. Eight horses with their riders and associated groupies met at the Station Road Bridge Parking Lot. The weather was perfect and we had a wonderful little ride in Brecksville Reservation. See the ride article and photos elsewhere in this newsletter. May 18 th will be Rob Pliskin s Natural Horsemanship Clinic for OHC members only at Peggy Costic s barn, Avalon Farm. Avalon Farm is located on 7716 Wooster Pike Rd in Seville. See the clinic article elsewhere in this newsletter. Our work sessions in April were awesome. We have cleared the leaves from most of Perkins, Riding Run, Wetmore and Langes. Wetmore has some culverts and ditches that we need to clear and clean. We ll get them done. Next work session is May 11 th. I really like riding in the spring when the trees are coming into leaf but you can still see through the underbrush. While it may or may not be a little strange, I like to be able to see the lay of the land. I like to see the rock outcroppings, the cliffs and the ravines and little open areas hidden in the woods.. It seems that no matter how many times I have ridden a section of trail I always see something that I have not noticed before. However, I don t believe that Willie cares one way or the other. If he had his druthers the scenery would be just a blur as he meanders down the trail. Quote of the month: Prejudice is ugly in any form. There is not one breed of horse that is better than all others, or one best breed. Each has been bred tor specific characteristics. A Paso Fino is not bred to pull a heavy wagon, few draft horses compete in calf roping, and a Quarter Horse is not designed to run a hundred-mile race. But there are more differences within a breed, than between breeds. John Lyons, with Sinclair Brown, Lyons on Horses As always, may your equine be with you as you traverse the trails of life. -Jack Weese, MOHC President 1

Lead the horse you ride and ride the horse you lead Natural Horseman!ip Clinic OHC Members Only Presented by Rob Pliskin Saturday May 18, :00 A.M. 2:00 P.M. Avalon Farm, 7716 Wooster Pike Rd., Seville, Ohio Only Eight horses will be accepted (Bring a rope halter and foot lead of yacht rope quality) Register your horse today Audit as a spectator and learn the techniques. For horse and lunch reservations and all other information Contact Peggy Costic, , peggyc@zoominternet.net Mark your calendars for an incredible learning experience for you and your equine partner. Medina OHC Member, Rob Pliskin, has generously offered a Natural Horsemanship Clinic for members of Medina OHC. Rob will be teaching good leadership skills by developing a relationship between you and your horse through good ground skills and a positive approach to safety, relieving anxiety, instilling confidence, building trust, communicating and problem solving. Rob has years of experience gentling wild horses at workshops for the Bureau of Land Management. Due to parking restrictions we will only be accepting 8 horses. However, handlers may switch with a friend and use their horse. You will need to bring a rope halter and a foot lead of yacht rope quality. You don t need a horse to learn the techniques. You can come and audit the clinic. Auditors must bring their own chair and car-pooling would be very helpful. Lunch will be served at a minimal fee. There is no charge for the clinic! However, at the end of the day Rob will pass the hat for contributions to The Chrysalis. Rob is a licensed social worker and program director at The Chrysalis a non-profit horse farm hosting individuals, families, veterans, and students in Equine Assisted Growth and Learning (EAGALA). For more information on EAGALA, go to See you May 18 th! 2

CELEBRATION REPORT MAY 2013 Just about eight weeks until Celebration 2013 July 12, 13, 14. Already many have volunteered for various important volunteer positions necessary to make this great event happen and continue to have the great success as in the past. A lot of folks have told me: I am available that weekend so let me know how I can help! There are many ways to help. One aspect of Celebration that is greatly appreciated by the participants are you folks on the spotter crew. You are the folks who keep track of all the riders, check off the numbers and report back to camp if Number 124 did not come through here (Usually it was due to a wrong turn- not following your ribbons) There are those who help the vet with things such as taking pulses and those who serve as scribes for the Vet Judge, marking the score sheet for each horse. These two jobs afford an opportunity to learn a lot more about care of the horse. Remember, this is our major fund raiser! Let everyone know about it! Flyers are available on our web site and you can download and print some from the one in this newsletter. Talk to other riders about the event. If they have never tried the sport, now is a chance to try it. As all of us know, folks who participate in this sport are more than willing to explain all about the sport and are helpful and encouraging. Also, we are fortunate to have as our Vet Judge, Dr. Pam Hess, DVM who is on the faculty at Lake Erie College School of Equine Studies. Dr. Pam provides a lot of good information about care of your horse at the riders meeting. And also, during the weekend, if folks have any questions or concerns, she is always willing to take the time, If you have not already volunteered, you most likely will hear from me! Patricia Vance, Ride Manager Celebration 2013 Fun and Fellowship Ride #1 Great Day~~Great Ride ~~Great Friends~~Great Food~~Great Fun That pretty much sums up the Medina OHC Fun and Fellowship Ride #1. We met at the Station Road Bridge Parking Lot and managed to park our rigs together once the bikers and hikers started pulling out. We had 8 magnificent horses go out at 11:00 A.M. for a nice tune up ride of 6 miles in the Brecksville Reservation. We want to thank Larry and Roxanne Owens for instigating our F& F Rides. There was a nice little grassy spot where we set up our tables and chairs for our trailgate party. Roxanne brought the meatball sandwiches and everyone else pitched in to make it a wonderful feast. Best part of all besides the ride was the fellowship and fun we had with Larry Owens, Roxanne Owens, Peggy Dunn, Jack and Linda Weese, Gail Jeffers, Brenda Nichols and her husband, Stacy and Tom Sadar, Jonathan Hughes and Anja, a member of Stark Co. OHC. What fun! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mark your calendars for the next Fun and Fellowship Ride #2 June 15 at the Covered Bridge Parking Lot Ride out at 11:00 A.M. Riding Run and Perkins Bridle Trails Bring something to share at the Trailgate Party ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *All photos in this newsletter were taken at the first Fun and Fellowship Ride* 4

May 2013 Trail Report April 20, our volunteers showed up and a lot was accomplished. The project was to complete removal of leaves from trails and clearing ditches and culverts. Once again we had the use of the Park s fantastic leaf blowers. Starting from Pine Lane Trailhead on 303, Greg Monsanty, Theresa Heger and Peggy Costic cleared Valley trail all the way to the end of the lane before the pines area. Molly Eastwood, Becky Sheryak, Jonathan Hughes and Patricia Vance completed clearing of Langes Trail and Patricia, Jonathan and Jack Weese completed the Butler Trail. Carolyn Sullivan, with Molly Eastwood and Becky Sheryak, after they got done with Langes, went over to the section of Valley from the northeast corner of the corn field near Akron Peninsula Road, and went north on the trail to across from Robinson entrance and trimmed overgrown vegetation, mostly briars. Mike Andrea, Rosemary Young, Wayne Crouse and Mary Jo Shaw did more clearing on Wetmore so the leaves are pretty much all cleared off the trails but several of the larger ditches remain to be cleared. It is great to see what fine shape the trails are in this spring, thanks to everyone s help in getting the leaves off and many thanks to Mother Nature providing a long stretch of sunny weather early so the sun can dry the trails before the leaves grow big and shade the trails. Jack handles the chore of picking up tools for the project early and returning them to our storage shed after everything is done. Jonathan went along with Jack to help return the tools to the shed. All of you who show up to help can take pride in your accomplishments. Our people get the job done! Afterwards, folks returned to Wetmore Trailhead to enjoy a fine lunch served by Karen Knuth and Linda Weese and all have a chance to visit. Last week on a tour of Perkins, it was noted the big ditches on the big hill down from the oil well, although we cleared the leaves out in the fall and did a great job, leaves are determined to fall into three of these and then water sends them to the entrance of the culvert. So far, Patricia has cleared the culverts each time, so all is well. Mother Nature will never let us win! Also, the nice little catch basin on Perkins that Kathy Cockfield and Patricia built a year or so ago to solve a bad mud hole situation is doing well. The cause of the mud was due to a spring there. The catch basin holds the water that seeps in and any overflow crosses the trail via a swale. Just one of the many interesting and different projects we do. Our next session is May 11. It looks like this will be the first one this year we meet at Robinson and should be able to camp. Remember, all those who work on trail have the privilege of camping at Robinson Field with your horse. Reminder: if you see anything on the trail that needs attention, such as trees down or obstructions in the creeks, contact one of your trail committee and let us know. See you all on May 11, 8:30am! Patricia Vance for the Trail Committee 5

Two Bald Eaglets Have Hatched! Two eaglets appear in the nest the week of April 14. Rick McMeechan Earlier this spring, returning bald eagles built a nest in a new tree within the Pinery Narrows area, located north of Station Road Bridge Trailhead in Brecksville. During the week of April 14, two eaglets were spotted in the nest and will remain there, protected and fed by their parents, for 10 to 12 weeks. To protect the eagles from human disturbance, the area surrounding the nest tree will be closed until July 31, View the closure notice here. Spring 2013 Update: Returning bald eagles built a nest in a new tree within the Pinery Narrows. One to three eggs are incubated for approximately 35 days. Eagle eggs are extremely sensi?ve to cold temperatures so adults must remain on the nest constantly. Human disturbance can disrupt this constant care, jeopardizing nes?ng success. During the week of April 14, two eaglets were spojed in the nest and will remain there, protected and fed by their parents, for 10 to 12 weeks. To protect the eagles from human disturbance, the area surrounding the nest tree will be closed un?l July 31, The Pinery Narrows area is north of Sta?on Road Bridge Trailhead in Brecksville, Ohio. While the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail remains open, the following areas are closed: The railroad tracks, and 30 foot right of way on either side of the railroad tracks, are closed to all pedestrian traffic from the Rt. 82 Bridge at Sta?on Road Visitor Use Area, north to the railroad tracks at the Fitzwater Yard. The Cuyahoga River downstream of the Brecksville (Rt.82) Dam to the Fitzwater Road Bridge is closed to all water ac?vi?es (fishing, wading, and boa?ng). Fishing is permijed at the dam. Please observe any posted restric?ons within the eagle nes?ng zone. Although recently removed from the endangered species list, the bald eagle is s?ll protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protec?on Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Both federal laws prohibit taking, killing, selling or otherwise harming eagles, their nests or eggs.
