1 ROUND LAKE NEWSLETTER May, 2013 FROM THE MAYOR: The sunny weather is finally arriving and we are anticipating all the summer events in the village. We will be starting with the Memorial Day Service and picnic on May 27 th at noon in front of the Village Hall. We have Congressman Paul Tonko as our guest speaker. We look forward to seeing you all there. A picnic will follow on Library lawn. We are late with the auditorium schedules but are working on pulling together a variety of programs for you to enjoy. Please be patient. The Village Board has imposed a moratorium on the construction of new dwellings. This will be in effect until December 31, 2013.

2 FROM THE CLERK: The water and sewer bills and property taxes will be issued on June 1. Clifton Park Water Authority increased the water rate to $3.76 per thousand gallons of water used. If you have any questions, please contact me in the Village Office at FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT: The Village will be reading water meters in May so please make sure that you water reader (the little black reader on your house) is clear from obstructions. Also if you are going to paint or reside your house and need to move the reader please contact the DPW Supt. ( ). DO NOT paint over the reader. We will be flushing hydrants May 13 th -24 th. You may see some cloudy water,however the water is safe to drink. Wash your white laundry at night.

4 TRASH PICK UP WEEK BY BILL RYAN, HISTORIAN Last week was trash pickup week, an event eagerly anticipated by most of for two reasons. The first, we can get rid of all the junk that has accumulated since the last pickup and that we never got around to taking to the dump, and second, to drive or walk around the village to see if anyone has put out something that I really want or need. I only found one treasure this year and thoroughly embarrassed one of my grandsons when I brought it home. What if someone saw Da picking through their garbage?? Historically, what we throw away is a treasure trove for archaeologists. Digging through a Roman latrine, a Revolutionary or Civil War garbage dump or a Dutch farm house privy in Albany provides a picture of how people lived, the clothes they wore and an insight into their everyday lives. I wonder if in 2313 if future archaeologists will be digging through the mound of garbage at the landfill just south of the Mohawk, trying to find out how we lived, sifting through what we had thrown away. I did not do a statistical study of what we threw away last week, but I have noticed a difference in what was on our piles this year and what was on our piles for last pickup. The big throw away items for last pick up were exercise equipment, treadmills etc., plastics lots of plastic. Plastic toys plastic dollhouses, white plastic chairs and aluminum folding lawn chairs with plastic webbing. This year the big item was recliners. Lots and lots of recliner chairs and an equal number of couches. The surprise item this year was toilets. I counted at least six. There was also a large amount of wood. I wonder if other communities tend to throw away the same items of junk that we do. I wonder that if in the future, when archaeologists dig down through the layers of our trash, if they will attach some significance to our throw away pattern. Will it indicate to them a health trend that two years after we throw away exercise equipment, we throw away recliners? Will there be exercise equipment out for pick up in 2015? Will the surge in toilet disposal in 2013 be confusing and require additional study?

5 Out and About: Round Lake Nature Notes May 2013 By Diane Shapiro What a tedious wait for Spring but finally I think it's here. Flowers are blooming; birds are singing, and woodchucks are making their rounds. When you're out and about be sure to look up from time to time. Many residents have spotted the Bald Eagles flying all over the village. In fact, one evening a group of us saw three eagles soaring above the Zim Smith trail at the front of town. On a March morning, while walking my dog, I saw an eagle glide into a White Pine to the left of the Marchand's house on Covel Avenue. I dragged my dog over to check it out and sure enough, the eagle sat regally in a top branch of the pine. It had a view of the tennis courts and the lake. I ran my dog home, grabbed my camera, looked up Marchand's phone number, and hurried back to the spot. The eagle had remained in place. In my excitement I forgot the phone number, knocked on Marchand's door and pulled Diane out to see the bird. How often is a Bald Eagle perched beside your house? I got some good photos of it which you can see on my blog, Roundlakenaturenotes.blogspot.com. As it sat in the tree it looked up toward the tree's top. Was it considering a nesting spot or did it see a smaller bird hiding and cowering in fear? It stayed for twenty minutes before flying off to the lake. Fifteen minutes later a Red-tailed Hawk soared into the same area. When it flew off its gorgeous red tail feathers were fanned out and gleamed in the sunshine. That same day, in the afternoon, I felt I was on a roll with nature sightings and decided to check on the Wood Duck nest boxes. I thought I would do a little Spring cleaning as apparently, Wood Ducks like fresh cedar shavings in the box each new nesting season in order to consider moving in. I brought work gloves, cedar shavings and my camera along for the job. I went down to the box at the end of Cleveland Avenue and a little to the east. I took some pictures of the box, adjusted the metal predator baffle and then opened the side door. A paper wasp nest was in one of the upper corners. I took a picture, then put on gloves and scraped it out. The old cedar shavings had feathers and fluff mixed in with it. The fluff could be from cattails or thistles. I reached in with gloved hands to scoop the shavings out. From the bottom of the box sprang two mice. I don't recall if I screamed but let me tell you I was VERY surprised! They flew up the inside etched front wall of the box. The etching gives traction to baby ducks so they can climb up and out. One mouse ran up on the roof and just looked at me like " what the %#*^ are you doing?" I found myself apologizing to it, took its picture and thought about eviction proceedings. After a couple of minutes, I wished the mouse well and left. At least the box was being used. I went down to the second box at the end of Peck Avenue and knocked a number of times before opening the door. The shavings looked clean but I forced myself to change them. No surprise inside this time. I called it a day after that! During the month of April the Wood Duck pair has been sighted in Schoolhouse Park, the Galloway's yard, and by Bob Sweet's basketball hoop. Hopefully, they will make a good nest spot choice. They need a spot close to water as the babies drop out of the nest and are immediately led to water by the mother. 6 THE 2013 VILLAGE WIDE GARAGE SALE AND PLANT SALE WILL SOON BE HERE! MAY 11, 2O13 9AM 4PM It s time to simplify our lives and clean out the house. The garage sale will be on Saturday, the day before Mother s Day. Here is how it works. It is open to Round Lake resident sonly for one day (Saturday) rain or shine. There is a flat fee of $20 per household. This will cover the advertising costs, maps, balloons and the remainder is to support the Round Lake Library and other WRLIS projects. There will also be a plant and book sale on the Library lawn and wood fired pizza provided by Gary and Sue Jones also to benefit the Round Lake Library. Please do not sell food at your sale. I have a permit a permit to sell pizza from the Department of Health. Ads will be placed in newspapers and Craigslist the week of the sale. A map will be produced to show all participants and will be given to the shoppers. The deadline to be placed on the map is May 6 th! Round Lake Antique show is being held June 22 and 23 from 9AM to 5PM. Friday night, June 21, we have a vendor making fish fries for the antique dealers and village residents. Saturday morning he will have breakfast sandwiches. We will have pies, ice cream smoothies and much more food. Shop and enjoy.

Carpe Diem Productions is excited to return to the Historic Round Lake Auditorium for its third summer residency! The Carpe Diem Kids program is open to children entering grades 3-6.

13 Carpe Diem Productions is excited to return to the Historic Round Lake Auditorium for its third summer residency! The Carpe Diem Kids program is open to children entering grades 3-6. Camp for the Carpe Diem Kids runs Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00-3:00 beginning July 11 and concludes with our four performances of Disney s Aladdin Kids. The Round Lake Summer Stars program is open to children entering grades Camp for the Summer Stars runs Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning July 8 and concludes with our four performances of Dear Edwina Jr. on August 2 and 3. Both camps will meet Tuesday-Friday, July 30, 31 and August 1 and 2 of the final week of camp for final preparations for the shows. Registration and auditions will be June 3 and 4 from 6:00-8:00 at the auditorium. For more detailed information regarding the camps, please check out the website: There you will find valuable information about how the camp is run, pictures from previous shows, and most importantly, the application for your child to sign up.
