SPRING 2014 Newsletter Village Office 106 East Main Street, P.O. Box 385 Phone: (989) Fax: (989) pewamo.org Portland Cruisers will Cruise into Pewamo! Park Pavilion Rental Reservations are currently being taken for this summer s social gatherings. If you are interested in reserving a pavilion at the Pewamo Blossomtime Park, please contact the Village at The rental fee is $25. Please avoid blowing your grass clippings into the streets. Excessive clippings or yard waste will clog the storm drains and interrupt drainage. Please Note: The Village Council is planning a rate increase in 2015 for park rentals.
No Solicitors Invited The Village Council appreciates that many of our residents would rather not deal with solicitors. Signs have been posted at our Village entrances to discourage solicitation. However, it is difficult to control; and the issuing of licenses to solicitors may not prevent them from coming to your door. On June 1st notices will be available refusing the invitation to solicitors on personal property. These will be 3" x 4" weather proof cards, which can be displayed upon or near the main entrance door to the residence, which state "NO SOLICITORS INVITED". When exhibited the card will constitute sufficient notice to any solicitor. Any person violating this is eligible for punishment as a municipal civil infraction. Direct Recycle is a socially responsible company committed to helping individuals and businesses re-use and recycle electronics responsibly, saving the Earth from harmful electronic waste. On site hard drive destruction services will also be available. You may not recycle CRT TV s but Direct Recycle will recycle: Computers Laptops VCR / DVD players Video game consoles Printers / scanners Assorted cables House phones Stereos Power tools Small electronics Flat screen s Computer monitors Microwaves Cell phones Appliances SPRING CLEAN UP Saturday, May 10 th 8:00 a.m. to noon This is for Village of Pewamo residents only. A test of the emergency siren alert system will take place on Thursday, April 10th at 7:30 pm. Disposal of Expired/Unused Prescription Drugs: When any drug is flushed down the toilet, the environment suffers. The drug becomes a part of both water and soil. Proper disposal of drugs can prevent the negative and toxic effects on our environment. Drug abuse is a well-recognized and rampant problem. In addition to protecting the environment, proper disposal can prevent drugs from falling into the wrong hands. If you have prescription drugs that are expired or unused and wish to properly dispose of them, Ionia County has prescription drop boxes at the Sheriff s office (in lobby and the lobby is open 24 hours a day) and at the Belding Police Department. Please consider proper disposal of expired or unused prescription drugs. Purchase the entire program and $AVE! $97.85 purchased separately / program purchase $87.85 DON T DELAY CALL TODAY!
Granger Residential Garbage Pick Up The Village trash service has been in place for nearly two years with Grangers. We hope you agree this service is going well. As proposed in the original five year contract, there will be a slight rate increase starting May 1 st. Standard Households will go from $10.95 to $11.26 per month Seniors Service will go from $9.84 to $10.05 per month There will not be an increase in the bag tag rate. Please remember to contact the Village when you turn 65 and are eligible for the Senior Service. If you are vacationing two weeks or more and you will not be needing waste removal, please notify the Village Office to receive a credit on your bill. Village Compost Reminder The Village of Pewamo maintains the compost site for the use of our Village residents. However, it must be a team effort. Please be sure to respect the compost site, disposing of your brush or compost in the appropriate areas. It is also important that you obey the following rules: Compost, which is free to Village residents, will be located near the entrance. Do not take sand, gravel or topsoil, as these are for DPW use ONLY. We accept leaves, grass and brush only. Be sure the branches are separated from the leaves and grass. Plastic bags are NOT allowed. Paper yard waste bags are available free of charge at the DPW Garage. Concrete, black top, hazardous waste, stones or demolition by products are NOT accepted. If you notice someone misusing our Village Compost Site, please contact the DPW or Village Office. Pewamo Block Party 2014 The date has been set for Pewamo s Block Party and planning is underway! Please mark your calendars for September 5th & 6th. Hydrant Flushing: Flushing of hydrants will take place on the last Wednesday and Thursdays of each month. Low water pressure and rusty water are not uncommon during the flushing of hydrants. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact the DPW or Village Office. Codification of Village Ordinances The codification of our ordinances is complete! All of the ordinances have gone through extensive legal review to insure uniformity with State of Michigan laws. We have created a link on our website for easy access. Visit us at pewamo.org or villageofpewamo.com. Click on the Minutes and Ordinances tab to find a link to the Ordinances. You can also view them by appointment at the Village Office. Copies of individual ordinances will be available for a nominal fee. Thank you to Carl Hafner and the Planning Commission for their efforts in making this possible.
Trail Development Update The progress of the Fred Meijer CIS Trail will quickly become evident when we see the crews working on the trail! The entire state rail-trail from Ionia to Owosso will be under construction as soon as weather allows. This is a $5,280,000 rail-trail project, consisting of 42 miles! Paved sections of asphalt will be in each of the five communities, connected by 32 miles of crushed limestone surface. There are also nine bridge structures on the route to be improved. The current target completion date is scheduled for October/November of this year. However, when working on a project of this magnitude, delays are possible especially if the weather chooses not to cooperate! The next several months will focus on the trestle/ bridge repair, pathway grading, limestone surfacing and finally aggregate and asphalting of the trail located within the five communities. It is crucial people DO NOT go on the trail during construction. Use of the trail prior to completion can result in serious injury or death, which unfortunately occurred during a recent trail construction project. We appreciate your excitement, but we urge you to KEEP OFF the trail until it is complete and officially open. Please help in spreading the word to avoid any unnecessary tragedy. Finally our thanks go to the Friends of the CIS Trail and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for their due diligence and commitment to the trail project. Without their dreams and hard work it is not likely that we would be celebrating the construction of the trail! Be sure to visit the CIS Trail website at or on Facebook at to receive updates. Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You Wilbur-Ellis Donation The Village would like to thank Wilbur-Ellis for their $2500 donation! These funds will be used to replace some of the fencing in our park, which is aged and dangerous. Their donation will allow us to create a safer playing field for those who enjoy our park! We are very grateful to Wilbur-Ellis. Have you seen the new dugouts? We told you about Owen Schafer s Eagle Scout project in the Fall Newsletter. Owen s project included the construction of two new dugouts in our Village Park, along with a donation to Austin s House and putting up a flag pole on the Practice/Jr. High Football field at the Pewamo-Westphalia High School. The dugouts are completed and ready to use! They are a great addition to our park and we re sure the ball players will appreciate them! More Dugouts are on the Way!!! The latest news is that our Youth Baseball Program has plans to construct four more dugouts for our Northwest & Northeast diamonds. This is another worthy project that was made possible in part by a generous donation from a caring couple in the community, Stan & Bobbi Simon. We d also like to thank the parents of the program who plan to take on the construction project. Pewamo is lucky to have so many generous and hardworking people who improve where we live, while serving as wonderful examples to our kids! If you wish to join this effort by contributing to the construction cost of the dugouts, please contact Corey Smith at Girl Scouts Donate Flowering Pear Tree to Pewamo Trailhead Welcome Center! This past fall our Pewamo Girl Scout Troop donated and planted a flowering pear tree at the Trailhead Welcome Center! This will be a beautiful addition to our Trailhead and will be enjoyed by many! Be sure to thank the Girl Scouts and their leaders for adding their touch to the Trailhead. Please visit us at pewamo.org and check the donations tab for more information.
A current list of Mayor, Clerk and Trustees is located on the village website and posted at the entrance of the hall.
