1 NEWS BRAKE LIVINGSTON A S REGION of M.A.R.C. AUGUST NEXT BUSINESS MEETING-- Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 7:00pm Livingston County EMS Building 1911 Tooley Rd. Howell, MI Park on north side of building opposite the main entrance. Find Howell Auditorium on second floor. ----DIRECTOR S MESSAGE---- Just a short message this month, because as you read this I will be in the motorhome touring the great Northwest. We're taking two of the grandkids to Oregon, Washington and Northern California. They want to see mountains and the redwoods. Hopefully it will be a fun trip, something they will remember for the rest of their lives. Back at the home front, you will have the opportunity to participate in several upcoming Livingston A events, make sure you check out the Tours and Events section of this issue of Newsbrake. Make the most of your summer so you have something to remember. See you all in August. Happy motoring! Fred Tryles, Director Livingston A's Editor's Comment: I've never seen Fred's motorhome but I'll trust that it's something that befits the President of a Model A club. Perhaps something like this Tennessee Traveler Housecar build on a Model AA chassis. As seen at the RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart, IN. `1

7 ---HISTORY OF THE BLUE DOT TAILLIGHT---- Though never an original equipment item on Model A's, the blue dot taillight lens is sold by most all of the various Model A's parts suppliers. This image is from Snyder's Antique Auto Parts. I suspect they are catering to people who have turned Model A's into hot rods. The blue-dots were first installed in the Cadillac town cars to set them apart from the rest of the line. At the same tine, they were being installed in coach built Duesenbergs and other very expensive custom-built automobiles. This made them attractive to the less well-healed, pre-war hot rodders and the blue-dots became a fad that still exists today. In the late '50's, the California Highway Patrol seemed to institute a campaign to eradicate those pesky blue-dots from the state. Blue-dots always seem to have been against the law, but no one seems to know why. Some speculate that police had blue running lights on the rear of their motorcycles and did not want to be mistaken for Hot Rodders! In 1992, a group of Washington rodders got a bill before the legislature to legalize blue-dots in cars that were at least 40 years old. Governor Booth Gardner signed the bill in March of that year and it became law in Editor's Note: This article came to me via un-known origin. I was curious where the State of Michigan stands on the legality of the blue dot lens. The closest thing I could find on the internet was this excerpt from the Michigan Vehicle Code: Signal lamps or devices; exemption. Sec (a) A motor vehicle may be equipped and when required under this chapter shall be equipped with the following signal lamps or devices: (1) A stop lamp on the rear which shall emit a red or amber light and which shall be actuated upon application of the service or foot brake and which may but need not be incorporated with a tail lamp. (2) A lamp or lamps or mechanical signal device which conveys an intelligible signal or warning to another driver approaching from the rear. (b) A stop lamp shall be capable of being seen and distinguished from a distance of 100 feet to the rear both during normal sunlight and at nighttime and a signal lamp or lamps indicating intention to turn shall be capable of being seen and distinguished during daytime and nighttime from a distance of 100 feet both to the front and rear. When a vehicle is equipped with a stop lamp or other signal lamps, the lamp or lamps shall at all times be maintained in good working condition. A stop lamp or signal lamp shall not project a glaring or dazzling light. (c) All mechanical signal devices shall be self-illuminated when in use at the times mentioned in section 684. (d) A motor vehicle licensed as an historic vehicle is exempt from the requirements of this section if the vehicle as originally equipped failed to meet these requirements. Based on that, I have no idea if the lights a legal or illegal. Since the blue dot taillights tend to emit more a purple-ish color, I suspect they might open the door to problems with the law. `7

It takes a ton of pressure off me having folks feed me pictures, clippings, and whatever else that I might include in the newsletter. I missed the July meeting because I was taking part in what I think was my 24 th Port Huron to Mackinac sailboat race. I wasn't going to do the race this year but at the last minute I jumped on the boat and it was a wonderful experience. The boat I was on, Genesis, placed 4 th in our fleet of 23 similarly rated boats. We missed a third place flag by only three minutes over the course of a 45 hour race.
