1 NEWS BRAKE Livingston As Midwest Region - Model A Restorer s Club January 2018 Director s Message Greetings from coastal Alabama. My Alabama accent is beginning to come back. At least I'm not spending my days shovelling snow and carrying in firewood. Instead, Sandy and I have been walking the beach, riding our bicycles, reading, and working on our tans. Hey, someone's got to do it. Right? I'd like to thank Vice-Director, Dan Samson for chairing the February meeting in my absence. I'm sure he'll do a fine job. In March, we'll have our first outing of It is being organized by club members, Tom Wright and Steve Wild. It will be a modern car event, driving to Stahl's Museum. It is a joint venture with the VMCCA group.that's one reason we will be driving modern cars. I'm sure there will be more information presented at the February meeting regarding this event. In April, the M.A.R.C. membership meet will take place in Granville, Ohio. Perhaps this will also be a modern car event due to the uncertain weather in early April in Michigan and Ohio. If you recall,rita and Rusty Gould, who operated the hospitality room at last year's membership meet, donated $250 out of the $500 outlay to the Livingston A's. This year Rita will again operate the hospitality room at the membership meet. She is in need of assistance. Those Livingston A members who are going to the event, might consider volunteering to serve a shift or two in the hospitality room to repay Rita for her thoughtful donation to our club. Sandy and I will see you there. Sandy's new knee is doing very well. The warmer weather seems to be good for it. She rode 10 miles on her bicycle with me yesterday with no ill effects except she snapped off a pedal on the bike. I guess I will have to replace both pedals on her bicycle, otherwise she'll only be able to go half as fast. Hey, wait a minute, if I don't fix it, I'll finally have a speed advantage. Right? 2 Meeting Minutes - January 16, 2018 Director Fred Tryles called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. 42 members were present. We had 3 guests. SECRETARY S REPORT: A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept November s minutes. They were filed as presented. TREASURER S REPORT: Past treasurer Judith Coebly presented November and December treasurer s report. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the reports. They were filed as presented. OLD BUSINESS: OB1: Audit Committee Report: Chuck Hescheles gave the audit report. The books were in order. The committee gave 4 suggestions: (a) The fiscal year be the same as the audit year. (b) The audit meeting be in January, before the new officers take office. (c) The club will investigate Quicken program for the new treasurer. (d) The incoming treasurer attend the audit committee's meeting. OB2: Christmas Party Review: The feedback included: high cost of drinks, location issues, complaints about the food, missing auction. Fred thanked the committee for their hard work. He said that the next year planning is to include the auction. Ed Thibodeau will investigate Whispering Pines and Mike DeLuca will investigate South Lyon Hotel. OB3: MARC dues: Make sure you pay your yearly MARC dues - $ Form is in your Model A News. NEW BUSINESS: NB1: Events: Fred Tryles reviewed the events and tours for the rest of the year. They are summarized in a following section of this newsletter. NB2: CAR PROBLEMS: none NB3: Treats: Thanks to Bea Thibodeau, Mary DeLuca, Judith Coebly for treats this month. Treats for February: Marty Kapanowski and Kari Hayden NB4: January Birthdays: Steve Wild, Bill Miller, Ann Miller, Kari Hayden NB5: Sandy Tryles gave the report. Leonard Hammermeister is having his 92 nd birthday Cards are welcomed. NB6: Chuck Hescheles shared the cardiac event he had and thanked the club for all the support he received. His warning: Listen to your body and ask for a calcium scoring test to see the possibility of a cardiac event in the next 3-5 years. NB7: 50/50: $57 was collected. Steve Wild was winner. Turns out there was a contingent of Livingston As members there including Vic Caporosso, Ed Thibodeau, Bill Miller and Gary McIntyre. The swap meet yielded an owner's manual for Chuck's Jeepster, a small Model A service manual for Bill Miller, a couple of battery disconnects for Steve. It was also a decent way to spent a cold, damp, and dreary January day! 4 of 9

5 Last fall, Ed Thibodeau and his son got together for a comparison of Ed s 31 Model A pickup to his son s 2017 Ford Raptor. Below showcases 86 years of Ford truck evolution! Since I work at Ford on the F150 program, I sent these pics to the chief engineer. He was very enthusiastic about seeing them. He commented that the 2.7L available on some F150s today is ALMOST as big in displacement as the 3.3L engine in Ed s 31! :-) Of course, the engine in that big tough Raptor is MUCH bigger: At 3.5L it s a whole 0.2L bigger than Ed s 31. Wow, things have changed! MK 5 of 9

8 On The Lighter Side :-) Based on the following article, we may need to get more than just coffee at McDonald s, for some members! It seems that McDonald s fries now cure baldness! :-)) Kids today have a different outlook on life than those who grew up with Model As. Here is a clip from Reader s Digest: My 6-year-old was playing with his toy soldiers using a different voice for each one. Soldier 1: I have a bazooka, and I make a big boom! Soldier 2: I have a pistol that goes bang! Soldier 3: I have a Swiffer, and I can make your house really clean! That last soldier caught my attention. I can t take it anymore. Gone to stay with my mother. I opened the fridge. The light came on and the beer was cold. I never did find out what she was talking about. - W.C. - Reader s Digest I love how our Model As have a timeless style to them, and they stand out. I like cars like that. I had a yellow Mustang for a few years and also loved how it stood out. Today as I walked from work to my grey Fusion, I texted my wife that my car is to too boring and looks like every other car. I was also getting annoyed that I could hear the locks clicking when I hit the fob but the door wouldn t open. Tired, and losing patience, I looked up to pause. It was then that I noticed the grey Fusion in the NEXT parking spot over had its parking lights on! Yea, that was my car! You NEVER have that problem with a Model A!! - the editor 8 of 9

9 Editor s Corner Well, here we are in the middle of winter, and very few of us are driving our As much. I gave it a try, and tho I bundled up due to not even having a manifold heater, keeping the windows defrosted was an issue. As I get more time in the saddle I m sure I ll learn tricks. But for now, I write a newsletter by the woodstove, look out the window at the beautiful snow, and enjoy that because it is what s beautiful today. I peek under the skirt of the car cover on my 28, and smile as I think about taking it out once the weather breaks.
