1 A of the Month In the December newsletter I shared with you my acquisition of a 1930 Standard Roadster. My intention was to get the car back on the road with chassis, interior and running gear restored, but leave the body as is for the survivor look. I had the expectation of having the car on the road by spring. Well, this winter has been very productive. Dan Jordan completed the short block and tested it on his engine stand. It s mostly stock and it turned out very nice. Art Peary and I checked tolerances on the rear end and did the final assembly at the rear end exam held in my shop in December. Since then, I have finished the chassis assembly, mounted the body on the chassis (thanks to Dale Waldron, Bill Hallows, Art Peary and Bob Schmitt), installed the windshield, fitted the wood bows to the top irons, installed interior components, mounted and adjusted the deck lid, doors and door latches, mounted running boards, fenders, splash aprons, bumpers, headlights and horn. The top will be installed when we get some warm, sunny weather so the top material can be stretched tight. Most all of these parts came with the car. It is a good solid driver. Our maiden tour will be to the March meeting, weather permitting. It has been a fun project and well worth the effort. John Firth, Grants Pass Page 1

There is an old saying, Time Flies When You are Having Fun. Despite the stormy weather, this winter has provided the opportunity to catch-up on many of the maintenance and upgrades for the 1930 Coupe. The 1929 Tudor work progresses and she was fired up for the first time in over a year. Fine tuning is still required! Many projects remain to be completed to get her on the road in safe operating condition. That is the goal for the year. Someone mentioned that it is that time of year! The time that the government puts out a call for help from the citizens. It seems that the government is in debt, has bills to pay and has requested donations and assistance again this year. As usual they have asked for donations to be sent via IRS. What else can one do but help when asked. Despite the diversions, anticipation of the approach of improving weather has the thought of getting out on the road with the Model A s as a high priority. Recent trips in the rain to friends and family close by have resulted in a new project. Although the windshield wiper works, it does not work well or reliably. It appears that an education on the workings, repair and service of the Model A windshield wiper is in order. I ll let you know how that turns out. As we look forward to the March 11th meeting at the Grange, remember the tour to Kerby, scheduled to follow. It s a Burl Gallery, Highway 199. It is the destination that holds a treasure trove of interesting objects and architecture to view. I hope the weather will cooperate and Model A s will be out in force. See you there! 3 Breaking News Model A Destroyed by Fire Art Peary s newly acquired coupe was destroyed last week when it caught fire. Art doesn t have a clue at what was the ignition point. The gas tank was 3/4 full so that was a large fuel source. He had parked at John Firth's house and was inside for about 15 minutes and when leaving, Nancy was first out and smelled smoke. When Art stepped out he saw the car totally in flame. Art s thoughts are for two important future improvements: Seat belts & a Fire Extinguisher. He s glad this didn't happen while parked in the garage at home. Another thought: do you have a smoke alarm in your garage? You should! 7 General Business Meeting - February 11, 2017 President Bill Hallows called the meeting to order at 9:30 AM and welcomed everyone. Chuck Green introduced his guest Dave Hamilton. Dave was born and raised in Grants Pass and owns Ham s Body Shop. He has built several Model A street rods and has two stockers. Announcements: Bill thanked Tom Rogers for arranging the tour of Rogue Truss Systems yesterday. After the meeting today Tom has arranged a tour at Rogue Creamery at Central Point. Jerry Schulte advised everyone about HB 2877, a bill currently being considered by the state legislature. It imposes a $1000 impact tax every five years for all registered vehicles 20 years and older. Bill announced that Mary O Cain has resigned as co-secretary due to hearing difficulties. Mary Anne Kightlinger suggested that the Club send her a thank you card for her many years of service to the Club and urge her to continue to attend meetings and activities. Bill Hallows will send her a note. Bob Fleischman moved and Tom Rogers seconded a motion to make Mary a life member of Henry s Lady. Motion passed. No further dues will be assessed. Birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged, among them Todd Calvert and Dotty Pearson birthdays are today, and Bob and Rusty Wall will celebrate their 60 th anniversary on the 27 th. Congratulations to all! Diane Maurantonio moved and Tom Rogers seconded a motion to approve the minutes of the January meeting as published in the February newsletter. Motion passed. Treasurer Gene Amaral reported an ending balance of $ as of January 31, Kitsy Wikkerink moved and Rick Black seconded a motion to approve the report. Motion passed. Jerry Schulte reported that he and Rick Black have performed an audit of the books for 2016 and found everything to be in order. Bill Hallows circulated copies of the 2017 proposed budget. Sunshine: Pam Green reported that Teri MacDougall is still with us. Mac s sister Lynn has been a great help in caring for her. John Scholfield has terminal pancreatic cancer and is planning to exercise his right to death with dignity on February 25. Phone calls are okay. Steve Hodges reported that Bob Hughes wife Barbara, who is very ill from the treatments and medications for melanoma, is currently being cared for by her daughter in southern California but will be returning home soon. Pam reminded members that she has cards for all situations, so be sure to let her know when she needs to send a card to someone. Old Business: None New Business: John Firth reminded everyone to think about attending the NW Regional Meet June in Coos Bay. Those who are planning on attending are: Hallows, Black, Wikkerink, Maurantonio, Firth, and possibly Fleischman. Information can be located at Page 7

8 Tours: Tom Rogers asked if members would be interested in visiting the Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility to show the kids our cars. There were no comments. Our tour for next month is It s a Burl in Kerby. Members suggested a few additional Kerby-area stops: Hampton s Rock Shop, Kerbyville Museum and The Dovetail Joint woodworking shop. Tom has several other ideas for interesting places to visit in the Illinois Valley. Marianne Fuller invited everyone to their annual barbeque on April 22. It s a potluck and they will be grilling chicken and tri tip. Membership: Chuck urged everyone to continue to be on the lookout for prospective members. Bill reminded everyone that today is the last call for 2017 Henry s Lady membership renewals. Mike McKey asked MAFCA Webmaster Rick Black why members can t join/renew MAFCA membership through the website. Rick referred him to the Join MAFCA link at the top of the home page. MAFCA is again offering free 2017 memberships to chapter members that have not previously belonged to MAFCA. Editor: Rick Black asked for volunteers for the feature car for the March Rogue Ramblings. John Firth volunteered. Library: Art Peary brought the MAFCA shop drawings set from the club library. He will bring the how-to DVDs and one or two different books to each meeting. He reminded members to refer to the list of resources that are available at Call Art if you would like to borrow anything. He will also bring the list and the How to index to all meetings for quick reference as needed. Tech Talk: Hank Perry would like to trade a Mallory distributor for a stock one. Art Peary suggests using Wetter Water in the radiator to help get the heat from the water to the fins of radiator. Art also gave some tips on different parts of the distributer. Todd Calvert is looking for a replacement motor for his sedan. 50/50: $54 was collected and $27 went to Helen Amaral. Attendance: 43 members were present today. Paul and Anna Hohman A Chassis Project The Rogue Valley A s are going to put on a demonstration of assembling a Model A chassis at the Rod and Custom Car Show in Central Point at the Expo on Friday April 14 through Sunday April 16. They will be bringing in all of the chassis parts on Friday and then will assemble a full running chassis by Sunday afternoon. Henry s Lady members are invited to come over and see our progress.
