1 Next Meeting: 2 nd Saturday 9:30AM Fruitdale Grange Car of the Month: Tom Bormuth The Lady Started Right Up! I have had my father s model A car in storage for over 25+ years. Just recently, I placed this car in my garage and began the restoration process. My grandson Parker, 15 years old, has been helping me with this restoration. As a part of this journey, I joined the local Model A club, Henry s Lady in order to gather information and wise friends who could help me put this old car back together. Right from the beginning they found a radiator and an exhaust for my car, thank you John. Next, came the months of grinding off old rust, painting car parts that worked (thank you Parker and Doug for your help here) and buying new parts for the ones that didn t work. But before I could go any further, I needed to start the engine. Would it work and even run after 58 years of storage? So, who came to my rescue, none other than John and Art! With their able help and a good distributor (thanks Art), we started up that old engine. What a roar! My wife came running to the door and whooped it up too. Such a relief and now, though a work in progress, I can continue to rebuild and one day hope to drive with my grandchildren in the Boatnik parade. ~Tom Page 1

2 2019 Officers and Executive Committee President John Firth Vice President and MAFFI Rep Dale Waldron Secretary Kitty Waud Treasurer Nancy Firth Past President Bill Hallows Committee Chairs: Newsletter Editor Todd Calvert Tour Coordinator Tom Rogers Sunshine Pam Green Librarian Art Peary Coffee Dale Waldron Membership Chuck Green NWRG Representative John Firth MAFCA Representative John Firth Web Master Rick Black Restorer Chapter News Reporter Mike McKey March has been a busy and exciting month for Henry s Lady members. Tom Bormuth s Model A is now running after nearly 60 years! Jerry Schulte has swapped motors in his cabriolet. Herb Waud is on the verge of getting Kitty s chassis running. Tom Rogers continues to make progress on his coupe. Mike McKey has been working on his sedan in preparation for the Dunsmuir Tour in May. It s great to see progress being made, especially on four of the above which are getting closer to being back on the road after many years absence. Congrats to all! I am getting close to finishing the pickup project that I wrote about in the November 2018 newsletter. I finished and primed the bed and fenders last fall. Most of the winter was spent putting the roadster pickup cab together and completing a fair amount of body work. That was finished just in time for the few days of dry weather we had in mid-march which were perfect for painting. After putting it all back together on the chassis, it ran after sitting for 10 plus years! Another one soon to be on the road again. We had 14 members at the Dairy Queen for our Last Tuesday lunch in March. As always, a very enjoyable get-together. Hope you can join us after the April 13 meeting for a trip over to Shady Cove for lunch at Mac s Diner on the river. Spring has sprung, and Model A weather is just around the corner. See you on the 13th! John From the President s Desk John Firth President Letter: April 2019 Rogue Ramblings is a publication of Henry s Lady Chapter, MAFCA, an Oregon non-profit corporation. Last Month s Tour to Randy Grubb s Garage ~ by Todd Calvert On March 9 th, we toured out old Hwy 99 to Randy Grubb s shop. If you don t know who Randy Grubb is, he s an artist and an animated storyteller. His works of art come straight out of his head and into physical form right at his home and shop. He explains that he s a paper weight artist by trade, using glass to create intricate and beautiful paper weights. He s fairly modest about it, but these are really the most incredible and unique works of art out of glass medium I ve ever seen. Randy always has been a car guy though. From before the age of 14 he was working on cars. His dad had an old model A, and soon Randy had that car going strong, and his dad had to convince him to paint it to slow his speed down. His dad, who was a dentist, saw his son had a gift and helped support that creativity the best he knew how. Randy didn t become a dentist, but always had cars in the garage to tinker on when he wasn t blowing glass. After a while he decided he wanted to build cars from scratch, from a clean slate. He needed better tools to bend and shape aluminum and metal with, so one night he very concretely decided that he would build a grand car and sell it. not to just anybody, but to Jay Leno. He didn t know Jay, but he would build the car anyhow. He started looking for engines as the central feature to begin his build with and settled on a v-12 continental air- Page 3

4 cooled Patton Tank engine left over from the Korean war. It s an all-aluminum gas-powered engine, hard to find, yet he found a few. What resulted was the Blastolene Special. Everything in the car is beautiful and industrial sized for the power of it. He and his wife took it to car shows and people took notice. Some folks there thought that Jay Leno might want to buy something like this, destiny fulfilled and the two of them connected. Needless to say, Randy sold him the car. Jay renamed the Blastolene Special the Tank Car and because of that transaction, Randy now has better tools to make more works of art. He explains that his creations are not contraptions, rather sculptures. Other sculptures he s created are the Decoliner, Pist-off- Pete, Decopods, Falconer Dodici, Magic Bus, and so many others. He is inspired by many things, but initially it was those huge pre-twenties race cars and their graceful curves and enormity. His mind is always working, thinking and coming up with new ideas. It was a real treat to hear Randy spin his life stories with such animation and fun and see what he has coming together in the garage now. A real inspiration. If you have time, Google Randy s name and see his sculptures of art, or check out this quick 6 minute video of Randy explaining his Blastolene Special here. If you spot him in town and wave to him, he s sure to wave back with a smile! Upcoming Events Information Bulletin Rogue Valley to Dunsmuir, CA Tour: It s getting closer!
