1 1929 Pickup Bob Perry My Dad got into antique cars when I was around 6 years old I guess so I ve been around them almost as long as I can remember. He had a 50 s something Willys wagon, 1915 & 1919 Model T touring, 1936 Hudson Terraplane, 50 s something Pontiac Chief and a couple of 1930 Model A coupes and the Model A pickup that he gave to me and I ve now passed onto my daughter Erica. He really liked the Ford Model T & A s the best. Dad and another man by the name of Ted McNair started the Riverside, California chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America. I have very fond memories of going on club tours and parades all over So Cal in both the 1915 Model T and the 1929 Model A. I would watch or fetch tools for my Dad when he worked on the cars, he was the type of Dad that would show me how to use his tools and not kill me when I left a few out in the yard now and then. bicycles or whatever project I was doing. Dad was a CHP officer and was such a talented driver from time to time they had him test cars & tires for them out at Riverside Raceway. I am very thankful to have had a Dad like him that showed me how and allowed me to use his tools to work on cars or I remember many times Dad would take me with him to make a dump run in our Model A pickup with trash cans and yard clippings packed to the roof in back. One of my favorite things to do with Dad was going to swap meets and going over to his friends houses to help them restore their cars, a lot of those guys had garages with all kinds of cool stuff for a kid like me to look at. They didn t just have car parts, some collected rocks, some did wood working or most important to me at the time, some collected military stuff. One guy gave me a cannon ball from the civil war (I loved collecting military stuff back then!). Our Model A Pickup was always kept in the garage and when my neighborhood friends were gone or grounded, I would sometimes take my dog and we would sit in the truck and pretend I was driving somewhere or just day dream on the running board and fender. I learned how to use a clutch by driving that Model A up and down the driveway, it wasn t a big driveway and I never got it out of first gear. Continued on page 5 Page 1

Perhaps the weather may change by the time you all get the newsletter and the warmth and sunshine will have been just a fleeting promise. The buds on the fruit trees and grape and berry vines are telling me that I m late in completing the pruning and winter is long gone, so I ll have to get going. I m also reminded that the Henry s Lady touring season for the Model A is almost upon us. That means there is the all important maintenance and safety checks to be carried out before the winter cobwebs are swept away. The winter months have seen new brake drums and shoes. A new steering box and shaft, oil pressure and temperature gauge, Safety Belts, and new top wood installed on the 30 coupe. The polarity and faulty coil have been corrected and the distributor cap and rotor have been replaced (thanks to the busted knuckles" ). Oil change, transmission fluid check, rear end fluid check, and grease and lube in all the appropriate locations will complete the shakedown list. All that will be left is to fill er with gas and start er up. See you at the March meeting.drive your Model A s. In this Issue Bill Hallows, President 2016 Tour Schedule... Not wanting to cross-thread them and have to replace the stud in the drum, I put the stubborn lug nuts aside and used others. I ended up with 5 or 6 stubborn nuts, so I went to my workbench and took out a 1/2"x20 tap and put it into my bench vice with the tap pointing to the side. Then I took a stubborn lug nut and started it on the tap. I used a deep 3/4" socket so that I could hand thread the nut onto the tap, turning it back and forth until about 3/4" of the tap was covered. Unscrewing the nut, I removed it from the tap, gave it a few raps on the bench to dislodge any loose material, and then went back to the wheel that needed more lug nuts and tried it again. It went on easily by hand! I repeated the process on all of the other lug nuts. All cleaned up easily. It's far less expensive to replace a bad lug nut than to cross-thread it onto a brake drum and face the possibility of replacing a stud, so it was well worth my time to clean up the lug nuts. # # # # # # # Page 3

5 Bob Perry 1929 Pickup continued So shortly after getting my driver s license I had saved enough money from mowing lawns and working as a grocery store box boy to buy a go faster car and went on the hunt for a 67 to 68 Ford Mustang. Most of the ones I found in my price range had a hard life and were on their last legs. One red fastback at a car dealership that I really wanted comes to mind. I rushed home and got Mom to show her, then after trying to take it for a test drive it died several times from the back of the lot to the front she told me it was a piece of junk and to keep looking. I finally found a 1967 Mustang coupe that had been repainted because of a dent in the rear left quarter panel (which I found out about later) but had a like new interior and V8 with automatic trans., power steering and air conditioning. It had a miss in the engine which the nice lady told me was because it just needed a tune up. I believed the nice lady and was in love with the car and blind to the problems that I should have seen. After I got home with my prize possession my Dad looked at it and determined it had a burnt valve and many more of my hard saved dollars later I had a good running Mustang. Now my Dad having a few sports cars and going through his mid-life crises would teach me how to Ricky Race. He taught me how to drive with two feet, slide a car with the brake or drift through curves. We use to race each other through the streets in Riverside a couple good ones come to mind, McAllister St. and parts of Victoria Ave. it was fun and exciting. If we got stopped by the police, most of whom he knew, they would end up just chatting for a while then they would let us go and tell us to slow it down. I wanted to be as awesome a driver as my Dad and being young and bold I would take crazy chances to prove just how good I was. I even had our Model A pickup in a drift in a gravel parking lot. One time in my Mustang packed with friends I drove 80 MPH down a residential street and passed a car! One of my friends never rode with me again after that. When I first got my Mustang, I wasn t used to the ease and quickness of power steering. I took it out for a drive with two buddies and went to show them how powerful my little Mustang was, and how good a driver I was. So I turned right onto this residential street that went up a little hill, as I was making the corner I punched it to spin the tires and kick out the rear end a little bit. With smoking tires it shot sideways then I over corrected because of the new to me power steering and then it went sideways the other way. As we were sliding up the hill just on the other side out of my view, was a group of parents watching their kids play baseball in the street. When they heard and saw me coming it was mass exodus out of the street, kids and parents stumbling over lawn chairs trying to get out of the way of this crazy driver! I got it straightened out and got the heck out of there, making it home, sick to my stomach and knowing my driving days were over! But no police ever showed up to haul me off, which I found out later police have to personally witness the infraction to cite or arrest you. Thank God nobody was hurt! I loved that little Mustang and drove it hard for another 3 yrs. before the transmission gave out and then I sold it. I often wonder if it ended up getting crushed or got restored. Fast forward to me now married, driving safe like a pillar of the community should LOL, but with a teenage son now learning to drive and him wanting to have a 1967 Mustang. I was happy he liked and wanted a car like I use to have and I knew a little about. We looked quite a while for one we could restore in the condition we wanted plus our price range. We ended up finding a 67 coupe just like the one I had in High School from the owner of where I worked. I have to say this was the best project I have ever worked Page 5

6 on, a perfect father and son project. My son did all the limbo under the car, hood, trunk and dash grunt work and I did all the instruction with a little limbo work! We would travel together to swap meets, search craigslist and EBay for parts. We stripped, gutted, cleaned, reupholstered, and reassembled that car in about two years. We finished it just in time for him to drive it to his High School graduation party. And now he drives his Mustang and my daughter drives her Model A pickup every year in the Glendale 4 th of July parade, Back to the 50 s cruise night and on special occasions. Both my son and daughter are much safer law abiding drivers than I was and as far as I know they have never had the Mustang or Model A sideways! This Model A has made a lot of fun history with our family from good memories with my parents by riding in her as a kid, to using her as a getaway vehicle in our wedding, plus being very active in the Paradise Valley Model A Club in So Cal to now in Henry s Lady s Club here in So Oregon using her in parades and tours with my wife and our kids. I have so far restored a 1974 International Scout, 1967 Mustang coupe and the 1929 Model A pickup. Currently I don t own any antique or vintage car (my kids do), and because neither of them have a garage to park them in both cars are garaged at my house. And because I m the caretaker I can take them out and drive them whenever I want, which helps keep the gas fresh, batteries charged and the spiders blown off. 8 Minutes General Business Meeting - February 13, 2016 President Bill Hallows called the meeting to order at 9:30 AM. One guest, Dan Bett who is a friend of Tom Rogers, was introduced. Bill thanked Nancy Firth for doing the silent raffle of books at the Christmas party which resulted in proceeds of $81 for the club. Bill reported that the Busted Knuckles Bunch was busy this week helping to diagnose and correct electrical problems on Bill s coupe and Bob Perry s pickup, as well as troubleshoot some issues on Kitsy Wikkerink s coupe which are still unresolved. He thanked John Firth and Art Peary for their time and expertise. Chuck Green thanked Bill Hallows for his continuing help with the installation of the roll-down rear window in his coupe. Announcements: We will have lunch at Wild River after the meeting. February birthday and anniversary wishes were extended. Acknowledgement has been received for the donation made in Chuck Tarski s memory to the Model A Ford Foundation (MAFFI). The annual banquet (formerly the Christmas Party) will be after our meeting on January 14, 2017 from 11 to 2. There being no additions or corrections to the minutes of the January meeting as published in the February newsletter, Bill MacDougall moved and Pam Green seconded a motion to approve them. Motion passed. Treasurer Gene Amaral reported an ending balance at January 31, Kitsy Wikkerink moved and Mary Hallows seconded a motion to approve the report. Motion passed. Sunshine: Pam circulated two get well cards for Dorothy Allen and Dave Williams. Dorothy has been in the hospital with pneumonia and Dave had some heart problems this week. He was at the meeting today and is feeling better. Old Business: Grace Peary asked about an audit of the books for Gene Amaral said it was done by Rick Black. Kitsy reported for Rick Black that the books are now closed for the MAFCA National Awards Banquet. Checks have been sent to Sis-Q A's ($330), the Model A Ford Youth Scholarship Fund, Inc ($1000) and MAFCA ($2000) to repay the seed money. Bill reminded everyone that the Myrtlewood A's will host the 2017 NWRG Meet June in Coos Bay. This will be a great opportunity for members of the club to experience a Model A meet. There will never be another one this close to Grants Pass. New Business: John Firth has arranged for a group order of T shirts and sweatshirts with Body Cover Design. He brought several T-shirt and sweatshirt samples to the meeting today for members to look at and try on for size if needed. He passed around price lists showing the various options available. In order to get the best prices, all items in this group order must be printed with a small club logo on the left chest and a large logo on the back. The club colors are maroon with tan logo, but feel free to do any color combination you like. Body Cover deals with many manufacturers so several fabric content and weight options are available. Kelly or Debi can help you find what you want. Tell them you want to place an order with Henry s Lady. Orders must be placed by Friday, February 19. Members need to pay for their own orders. The address is 420 SW H Street. If you want something different such as a jacket or a cap, or you can t get an order in by the 19 th, it s not a problem. You can still order anything you want at any time. Chuck Green needs some club business cards printed for the membership packets and for members to use. Estimated cost is about $30 for 200. Chuck moved and Dan Jordan seconded a motion to purchase the business cards at the best price within reason. Motion passed. Tom Rogers mentioned he had good results from VistaPrint online. Chuck Green reported he had been shopping for Model A tires recently and Coker Tires mentioned that they offer a group discount to car clubs. Chuck estimated that it might be 5% or possibly 10%. He asked if members would be in favor of him exploring this option. Dale Waldron moved and Dave Strutz seconded a motion authorizing Chuck Green to pursue the details of the group discount program with Coker Tire on behalf of the Page 8

9 club. Motion passed. Tours: Larry and Marianne Fuller invited Henry s Lady members to the annual barbeque at their place in Sam s Valley on the first Saturday after income tax day. This year it is Saturday, April 16. Last year they had 60 cars, mostly hot rods, all Fords. They provide meat and soft drinks and guests should bring a side dish or dessert. RSVPs are appreciated. We will probably tour over as a group. Details to follow. Many thanks to Larry and Marianne! Tom Rogers talked about three of the tours he is working on for this year: Great Cats World, Rusk Ranch Nature Center and his u-cut Christmas tree farm. All are in the Illinois Valley and details have not been worked out yet. Also on the list are tours to: Ted and Elizabeth Aguirre s farm, Krauss Craft (Playcraft Systems), Canine Angels, Green Acres (July) and possibly a garage tour. Bob Fleischman asked what ever happened to put on a This Lady Drives a Model A course. Bill Hallows and John Firth will look into this. Newsletter: Bill asked for a 'cover car' for March and Bob Perry volunteered. Librarian: Art Peary gave an update on the club's library. Today he highlighted the How to Restore series published by MAFCA. Contact Art Peary if you would like to borrow anything from the library. Membership: Chuck Green reported that he has no prospective members at this time. He also reported that he made 20 phone calls a few weeks ago to members who had not paid their dues by late January (dues are due by December 31). This amounts to almost 40% of the membership. Every one said they would renew and mail their check. The main reason timing is important is that it delays the distribution of the club roster. There was discussion on what could be done to encourage people to renew before the end of the year. Some suggestions were: impose a late penalty for late renewals, impose an incentive to renew early, or let memberships lapse after one reminder. No action was taken and consensus was to finalize and distribute the roster at the end of February as has been done in the past. After renewals that were paid today, there are still 10 outstanding. Car Talk: Dan Jordan reported that he is looking at a 1930 Fordor to buy next week. Bill Hallows explained the problem he had with his coil (reversed polarity) and suggested doing a work party to check polarity on members cars. John Firth offered to work on planning this with Bill. 50/50: $74 was collected and $37 went to John Scholfield. Bob Perry donated two McDonalds gift cards for the raffle today. Tom Rogers and Helen Amaral were the winners. Art Peary announced that he was contributing a front wheel alignment tool to the November Lucky Loser Raffle. Attendance: 39 members were present today. Jerry Schulte moved and Chuck Green seconded a motion to adjourn the meeting at 10:40. Motion passed. Respectfully submitted Nancy Firth Co-Secretary # # # # # # # Page 9
