President s Ramblings WOW! Where has the time gone? The annual Panhandle Scramble tour, a great success by any measure, has come and gone. Hershey is behind us, and the Christmas season is upon us. Yes, we could not have ordered any better weather than what we had for the week of the Panhandle Scramble. No rain, no wind, cool mornings but warm, wonderful afternoons and evenings. The same could be said for Hershey, although it was downright warm in the afternoons and there was a little drizzle on Saturday before the car show judging. All in all, fabulous weather was present for the Fall season and our hobby. I want to thank the Farrells for graciously hosting the October meeting with a pot luck and wearyour-favorite-halloween-hat themed meeting. Needless to say there were some very interesting hats on display not to mention the very special guest Dave Ellis invited to the meeting. Hopefully Gayle got the details in her minutes as I know I cannot pronounce his name let alone try to spell it. A big thank you to all in the club that helped to make the annual tour such a success. It takes a whole club to put on such a great tour. Congratulations to Dave and Elaine Ellis for receiving the revived Spirit of the Tour award. The Panhandle Scramble was their idea from the beginning and they did a great job stepping up and following through. Well deserved. Looking ahead, everything is looking great for next year. Mike and Carolyn Martin are going to put on the Annual Tour in Lewiston, Idaho with help from Pat Emmerich and Jim Stutzman and you know, of course, their wives will be quite involved. The Markleys are chairing the annual KISS Tour in Buckley, Washington. Our new slate of officers for next year finds us in very capable hands. Your new President will be Pat Farrell and Ray Markley will remain Vice- President. Elaine Ellis will serve as Secretary and Vicki Markley will watch our finances again this year. Leaving the board after two years of service will be Robb Johnson and Donna McGinnis, however, Donna has volunteered to put together the 2017 membership roster. Mike Martin has volunteered to serve another term. New to the board will be Harold Musolf III and Mike McGinnis. Continuing on the board for one more year will be Tom Brethauer, Pat Farrell and Dave Ellis. Thank you to all from a grateful club. A date for the Christmas party has been set for December 10th. Thanks to Scot Taylor for hosting our Christmas celebration and Robb Johnson for coordinating the details. As this year s President I want to thank everyone in the club for your support and confidence in me and--- May the Brass be with you! We will try to avoid 2 nd Saturday meetings when at all possible. Two board members have asked to be replaced. Robb Johnson & Donna McGinnis. Harold Musolf III & Mike McGinnis have volunteered to replace them. Actual club Meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm October 29th, 2016, by President Keene Brewer at Pat & Merrily Farrell s house in Sedro Woolley. Minutes: August meeting minutes were read by my proxy, Harold Musolf III, minutes accepted unanimously by club. Dave Ellis introduced his guest, Hanamanus Pumpkinsy III. Skagit-Snohomish tour banner has been found, and is now in the possession of President Keene Brewer. Treasurer's Report: Report given by Vicki Markley. We are solvent. We also made enough on the September tour to pay the club back for the Lake Coeur D Alene boat tour. We were $500 under budget for the tour.

Motion to transfer funds in tour account from Dave & Elaine Ellis to Mike & Carolyn Martin for the 2017 tour was made by Vicki Markley, and to also to move an additional $500 in seed money for 2017 tour. Motion was seconded by Harold Musolf III. Motion accepted. The Ellis s and the Martins will go to the bank together to accomplish this. Sunshine Committee Report: Ann Musolf suffered a TIA, but is doing well. Les White was briefly hospitalized, but is also doing well now. Ray Markley did NOT sabotage his urine this time. There was no meeting in September due to the Panhandle Scramble Tour, and there will be no Meeting in November. Next club meeting will be December 10 th at Scot Taylor s house in Sequim. Ray & Vicki Markley gave an update on the 2017 Kiss tour. Tour will be held in Buckley WA, August 3 rd -6 th. We will be headquartered at the Buckley Econolodge. Special rate $99 for tour participants. The Econolodge does have a pool. Les White has graciously volunteered to be our trouble truck driver for the KISS tour. Old Business: Keene had photos taken at the Ag Museum to hand out from the Yakima Tour. Elllis brought a copy of the Coeur d Alene newspaper where we made front page news for the September tour. There is also an article about the tour in the Spokane Camaro Club s newsletter, written by Pete Coffin. Pete is brother-in-law to Buck Armstrong. Buck & Lori Armstrong drove trouble truck on the tour. Pete and Judy Coffin rode with Keene and Chris on Tuesday of the tour. Tom Brethauer gave us a rundown of the Car Show at Paine Field in Everett in September. The day started out cold & rainy. But it got nicer as the day went on, and we were finally able to unwrap & peel off some layers. It was mid-day when the vintage planes were finally able to fly, but it ended up being a very nice day. Everyone who attended was offered a 1 year free membership to the Museum at Paine Filed, as well as offered BBQ dinner if you stayed late enough. Keene also made an Executive Presidential decision to award the Spirit of the Tour award (which was not given out during the tour) to Dave & Elaine Ellis for all their hard work & dedication in making the Panhandle Scramble tour such a success. Hershey update: Mike Yeakel says parts are getting more sparse. Was only able to fill Robb Johnson s & Steven Hammatt s trailers. However, everyone had a good time. Weather was pretty good, Keene thought there were fewer people and more vendors this year.

Donna McGinnis moved to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Ann Musolf. Meeting adjourned at 1:56 PM. Vintage Aircraft Weekend Saturday September 3 Tour On Saturday September 3 rd some about a dozen members of the club in 7 cars ventured out to the Vintage Aircraft Weekend at the Historic Flight Foundation. It all started in a light drizzle that continued well into the morning but finally cleared in the early afternoon to mostly clear skies and much warmer temperatures by the end of the day. Steve Rex s 1911 Model T roadster. Harold Musolf, III, Steve Rex, and, in the back, Robb Johnson, planning his escape stage left. He is an Australo-Walla-Wallan, after all, and does not appreciate rain like the rest of us. Mike and Carolyn Martin in their 1914 Cadillac touring car fresh out of the trailer and into the drizzle. A beautiful remote controlled scale model of Bad Kitty, one of the planes in the museum collection. Harold Musolf, Jr in front of his Case touring car with Bob Monsen nearby pretending to be talking on his phone. Behind Bob is the nose of one of the most beautiful Model T Speedsters you ve ever seen. The audacity of that guy, who let him join us? And, beyond that is Harold Musolf III s 2 cylinder REO and Dave Ellis 1940 Ford Convertible. A P-51D Mustang from the Heritage Flight Museum in Burlington, WA.

Another P-51 Mustang from the Historic Flight Foundation collection. Yellowstone park bus with Wyoming and Montana license plates, restored to its former grandeur. A Japanese Zero. Not sure which collection owns this. This Stagerwing Beechcraft Model D17S was built in December 1932 at the height of the depression. Bad Kitty, a Grumman F7F-3 Tigercat is one bad bird. Bad Kitty in the foreground and a slew of other planes on display, their pilots raring for the weather to clear so they could fly. An exhibit of robots that appeared to be doing their own thing, occasionally bumping into and fighting one another. I tried to keep my distance, especially after one made a run at me. I looked around for remote controllers, but didn t see anyone who appeared to be doing that. Glacier Park Lincoln with lots of room in back for luggage.

Bivouacked WWII-era soldier encampment along the tarmac. There were many displays inside the museum and many people dressed up in period uniforms from all different branches of the military. Staging a plane for takeoff took quite a few hands to guide them out. The Panhandle Scramble Tour Each year the Skagit-Snohomish regional group plans and executes a superb tour and invites the world! This year was no different. It all went down in Idaho, where guard rails are scarce and helmets are for sissies! A look across Paine Field toward Paul Allen s Museum, called the Flying Heritage Collection which now houses a collection of military aircraft as well as some tanks. If you ve not visited it, it is well worth the price of admission. At the day one drivers meeting everyone was ready for a long haul, as it was to be the longest drive of the tour at 125 miles around to the farthest reaches of the south side of Lake Coeur d Alene and then return. All the tour days started out chilly, with temps near 40 degrees, so everyone bundled up appropriately. Once planes could take flight, there was a lot of activity on the ground staging the planes to take off and in the skies with multiple planes always flying at one time. Riding along the lake, we took in some gorgeous views of Lake Coeur d Alene.

park with a view of the lake where snacks and drinks were served. We all stretched our legs warmed up and made the most of this stop. Another view of the lake heading around Lake Coeur d Alene, taking in the views and gorgeous countryside. Model Ts around the Harrison Trading Post. Our first day was spent riding with Mike and Carolyn Martin who graciously offered us a spot to ride along in their 1914 Cadillac touring car. A 1910 Velie D touring owned by James and Garie Zordich from Oregon. Harrison is a beautiful little town along our route. Here we took over, extending our presence throughout town. Arriving for lunch on day one of the tour at our farthest reach south by the St. Maries golf course. There was a nice little antique store to peruse and some other cool old buildings, shops and a Ladies in period dress strolling toward the restaurant where we ate lunch.

A beautiful vista from the parking lot of the restaurant where we ate lunch made for a great photo opportunity. Three blokes having a belly laugh, probably at my expense, but I wasn t complaining, as the man in the foreground, Mark Shaw, was our driver that day and he quite astonishingly got us first around the lake to the country club by at least 5 minutes permitting me to take some incredible pictures of the cars arriving there that day. An example of some of the rugged and beautiful terrain experienced along our way back on day one of the tour. The hotel parking lot at dusk on day 1 of the tour. Hurleys 1914 Tourraine Model 11 Touring Hayden Lake Country Club mid-morning stop, parking on the lawn. Model T Speedster at Hayden Lake

Bob Monsen and his son, Adam, standing beside Bob s 1910 Ford Model T touring car. Skagit-Snohomish Regional Group President Keene and Chris Brewer arriving with passengers in their beautiful Abbott-Detroit touring car Haynes Touring car. The Plumb s passenger Cadillac from Oregon. Dan and Samantha Findlay s Stanley Model 62 Roadster from British Columbia Delage R Voiturette owned by Al and Mary Travis of Arizona was awarded Gentleman s Choice for the tour Pope Hartford Roadster owned by Cameron and Kay Sidwell from Utah were awarded Ladies Choice for the tour.

Jim and Suzanne Gordon from Portland in their 1911 Model T Darrell and Jeanine Pitts from Bellingham, WA in their Model T (left) next to another of the many model Ts on the tour. This 1912 Haynes Model 21 was a lovely car from California, once owned by Art Twohy, the founder of the Horseless Carriage Club. It was purchased from Art s nephew by the current owners Todd and Sandy Miller Hudson Model 6-40 owned by Joe and Vicki Morgan of Oregon. This 1915 Kissel Kar 642 Touring is owned by Glen and Shirley Slack of the Portland Regional Group. Many cars grouped up at a park before heading to lunch, back across the Spokane River.

A relaxing afternoon tour of Lake Coeur d Alene by boat. The parking lot of the Twin Lakes Golf Course after our tour invaded it s clubhouse for our lunch time feeding. Another view of those up top side taking in the later afternoon sun, enjoying drinks and the scenery on this relaxing boat excursion Delage R Voiturette owned by Al and Mary Travis of Arizona was awarded Gentleman s Choice for the tour. The Coeur d Alene Resort Hotel and marina that has a nice boardwalk surrounding it. Bob and Patty Strieter in their 1911 Ford touring Pat and Merrily Farrell s Stanley Steamer.

Can t forget the kissing fish! And speaking of KISS KISS Tour 2017 Based out of the EconoLodge Hotel in Buckley, WA, there is a special rate for August 3 (check in at 3pm) to August 6 (check out at 11am) for KISS tour attendees at $99 per night. gm.wa187@choicehotels.com or phone and mention "KISS Tour".
