A new member, Frank Votaw, introduced himself as the new owner of Gil and Trudy Humann s spectacular 1931 Model A Ford Roadster. We all congratulated him on getting a great car. A discussion about future tours and the fall highway cleanup were very lively. Conflicts in scheduled events were resolved. The fall highway cleanup in October is our chance to give back to our community. If you have never been on one they take about an hour or so and are followed by a fun time at the Old Country Mercantile for good conversations, a lunch (you buy) and ice cream (usually provided by a club member). Five cars travelled to Pendleton, Oregon on August 11th to the Umatilla Heritage Museum. Of course, our car was on a trailer. A scenic drive along the Columbia River on Highway 12 was followed by a trip through the vast farmlands on Highway 37, where wheat was being harvested. The museum provided some great snacks upon our arrival. A walking tour of downtown Pendleton was nice and the lunch at the Main Street Diner was delicious. Think about being the lead for a local short tour for the third Thursday on September 20th. The Red Mountain tour lead by Jan and Mara Jackson in July was great. Remember these short tours always involve food, fun and a chance to talk to fellow members. Did I already mention FOOD? Tom Club Events States Day Parade September 3 U.S.S. 3 PENDLETON MUSEUM TOUR (Also known as the hotter than Hades tour) This tour literally started with a bang; which was Blaine & Bev s tire going flat. You ll notice that Jan & Bob (he s the one under the car) are changing the tire while Dean and Blaine offer technical assistance and prognostication. You may be wondering who the guy in the cowboy hat is (see photo below right). When we got to Pendleton they were so accommodating I asked if the mayor would swing by and give us the key to the city. Unfortunately, they hadn t caught on to my sense of humor, or as Mara calls it nonsense of humor. So, the mayor, Phillip Houk and his wife Kathy, along with Keith May, President of the museum, showed up and welcomed us to Pendleton. Our good friends, Jack Remillard and John Carraher, also stopped by to greet and have lunch with us. We walked around the downtown region for a couple of hours examining priceless antiquities and visiting some of the interesting cowboy stores (Let er Buck!). We left about 3:30 pm when it was blazing hot. I pushed my A up to the point where the motometer indicated eminent boiling over and then backed off a smidgen and continued back to the Tri-Cities. I didn t know I could drink a couple of gallons of iced tea in one sitting! Submitted by Jan Jackson Photo above shows Robin & Tom Eldhardt, Nancy & Bob Kenady, Mayor Phillip Houk and wife Kathy, President of the Museum Keith May, Teri & Dean Hinkson, Mara & Jan Jackson and Bev & Blaine McGillicuddy. It was a Grand Parade The club was represented at the August 18th Benton Franklin Fair and Rodeo grand parade by five Model A s and members who stayed cool underneath a shade tree on a warm morning and soon-to-be hot afternoon in downtown Kennewick, WA. Fortunately, there were no car mishaps; however, the radiator gasket on Jan s car decided to let us know it was time to be replaced so a quick stop at the auto repair store was needed before we reached the parade site. Club members who participated included Jim Bowers, Jan and Mara Jackson, Pete and Grace Jackson, Don and Marti Meyers and Frank Votaw with his granddaughter, Hannah. We gathered at Sterlings restaurant after the parade where Garry and Joanne Bryan and John and Walteen Corson met us. It was a great day to be sharing our cars with the community. 4 History of the Model A Ford (Part 9) Submitted by Prez Tom Eldhardt Authorized Dealer options/accessories Ford directed the dealerships to only sell and install certain options/accessories. Some items later became standard factory installed parts. These parts would be tracked by the head office to ensure that these were a high volume item sold at each dealership. Sales of these items became mandatory for every dealership, if they wanted to stay in business. Dealerships would share in the profits from the sales and it wasn t long before every car sold had at least one accessory item on it. Typical items are in the following list:. Air gauges - cylinder style Rumble seat trunk & lid conversion Air Maze air cleaner Bumpers - Rear and brackets Bumper - Front and brackets Cigar lighter Clock (header mounted) Cowl lights Distributor heat baffle Fender lamps for front fenders Fender step plates (cars with Rumble seats) Heater - exhaust manifold sheet metal box Landau irons for 54-A Business Coupe Lap robe Top boot cover for open models Luggage rack carriers -Standard Luggage rack carriers - Deluxe Luggage rack carriers - for Victoria Paint rims to match body stripe Pedal pads (rubber) Radiator cap with Quail figure Radiator cap with Motometer Rear bumper extension brackets Seat covers Side mounted wheels & carriers Spare tire cover - fabric Spare tire cover - metal with SS trim ring Spare tire guard (goes between bumpers) Spare tire rim tire rim lock Spare tire rim - tube & tire Spare wheel tire lock (for side mounted tires) Spare wheel w/tube and tire (for side mount) Sport light (Spot light) Spring covers Taillight for right side Top boot cover for open models Top hold down straps for Standard Roadsters Top rest saddles for Standard Phaetons Trunks Welled front fenders White wall tires Wind wings for closed cars Wind wings for open cars Windshield wipers - Electric

5 U.S.S. TRITON SAIL PARK TOUR The tour to the U.S.S. Triton Sail Park, located in north Richland, and shown above, will be held on Friday, September 14th. Plan to meet Rick and Janet Budzeck at the Port of Benton offices at 3100 George Washington Way by 10:30 a.m. for a presentation by Director of Economic Development & Governmental Affairs, Diahann Howard, on what is happening in north Richland, followed by a tour of the U.S.S. Triton sail and conning tower. Following the tour, we will proceed to the Richland Airport for lunch at Almost Gourmet. Lunches will be pre-ordered at the monthly meeting on Thursday, September 13th. After lunch we will travel to a nearby business and see one of the nicest shops in the Tri-Cities and some refurbished antique gas pumps. If you have questions regarding the tour, contact Rick and Janet at MAFCA NEWS Error on Ballots On the ballots mailed out on August 11, there s an important typo in the first bylaws amendment. During the editing process, the part to be changed (from one year to two years) didn t appear correctly. The correct language is shown below (correct language in red): Article IV Section 1 (A) Qualification of Candidates To be considered as a Nominee, a candidate must be a MAFCA member in good standing whose membership is not then suspended or terminated, at least 18 years of age, and be familiar with the operations of MAFCA locally, regionally and/or nationally. No candidate shall be eligible for reelection to a third consecutive full term; however, candidates shall be eligible for re-election after at least two years not on the Board. Candidates, other than those running for re-election, shall be requested to provide current references as to their qualifications. Each candidate elected will be expected to attend all scheduled Board Meetings. This change is to provide more opportunities and a greater chance for a variety of our members to serve as a director. It is therefore being recommended by the Board of Directors to increase the mandatory time off between a second and third consecutive term from one year to two years. International Model A Day is September 22nd CALENDAR PHOTOS If you haven t had your calendar photo taken yet, the time is nigh. Please contact either Fred Fraser or myself to place yourselves and your Model A s in the calendar. As always, it s a first come first served basis. Submitted by Jan Jackson

6 August 9, 2012 Meeting Minutes The monthly meeting was opened by the president, Tom Eldhardt. Those attending were William and Emilia Sperry, Blaine and Bev McGillicuddy, Jan and Mara Jackson, Frank and Laura Osterwyk, Rick and Janet Budzeck, Robin Eldhardt, Garry and Joanne Bryan, Jim Bowers, John, Grace and Joy Trumbo and new member Frank Votaw (purchased Gil and Trudy s Model A ). The minutes from the July meeting were approved with a motion. The treasurer s report was provided by Mara. Correspondence: Mara reported the club received a post card inviting our club to visit the Thompson Falls Lodge in Thompson Falls, Montana and a catalog from Gas Light Auto Parts. Jan passed out subscription forms for those interested in signing up for the Early Bird Newsletter for the MAFCA 2014 National Convention in Puyullap, Washington, July The regional meet in September 2013 will be in Bend, Oregon and in Walla Walla, Washington in Tours: Jan asked those people who are going to Pendleton on Saturday, August 11th, to meet at Columbia Basin College at 8:00 a.m. Blaine reminded those present of the Benton Franklin Fair Parade set for Saturday, August 18th. If you plan on going, be sure and line up by 9:00 a.m. Due to a conflict with Heritage Days and the highway clean-up on Saturday, September 29th, the highway clean-up has been moved to Saturday, October 6th. Janet asked for a show of hands from those interested in the U.S.S. Triton Sail tour set for Friday, September 14th. (See details printed earlier in this newsletter.) Old Business: Tom reminded members to contact Jan or Mara to order new white shirts. New Business: Tom stated the next meeting will be Thursday, September 13th. Projects: Tom has been cataloging his car parts to make sure he has what he needs to complete all the cars he wants to restore. John provided an explanation on how to turn a 2-speed dual/high into an overdrive and suggested going on an overnight tour to Virginia City and Nevada City, which are just a few miles apart. Tom thanked John and his daughters for providing the refreshments and recognized those members celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. Special recognition was given to Frank and Laura in honor of their upcoming 63rd anniversary. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Submitted by Janet Budzeck, Secretary The purpose of the club shall be to serve as a medium of exchange of ideas, information and parts for admirers of the Model A Ford, and to aid them in their efforts to restore and preserve the car in its original likeness. Membership in the Model A Ford Club of America is a requirement to joining the Columbia Basin Chapter. To join MAFCA, see the web site at Requirements for membership in the chapter shall not insist upon the actual possession of a Model A Ford, merely an interest in the objectives of the club and a desire to take an active part in club activities shall be the primary requirement for membership. (Excerpt from Columbia Basin Model A Club Bylaws dated December 2006.)
