1 0/Experience Different Views. Discover Common G ffgm Experience Different Views. Discover Common Ground. July August, Sara Harmelink President President s Message Celebrate summer with FFGM! We are anticipating the arrival of FF(Friendship Force) Clearwater, Florida in July and FF Alajuela, Costa Rica in September. Read about the many activities open to all club members and come to meet and share time with our inbound ambassadors. Many thanks to our journey coordinators, planning committees and those who are home hosts, dinner hosts and day hosts for these special weeks. It is impressive that many newer members are directly involved on planning committees and will be hosts. What a great opportunity to learn about different cultures, to help our visitors understand what it is like to live in the Greater Milwaukee area, Wisconsin USA and to share time with a new friend. Won t it be fun to explore the ways that are different in their communities, whether it is types and preparation of foods, family and social customs or how their local and national government works? And this is what I find so exciting. After we have had these opportunities it comes back to this: by exploring our differences we discover how much we are the same. Friendship Force is a non- profit cultural organization that is present in 60 countries with over 300 journeys occurring each year. During the journeys we travel or home host in order to reach a new level of understanding. We explore, understand and serve our global community. If you are not already a member, come join us! All the information you need is in this newsletter. Find out more by looking at Friendship Force International s website at or Friendship Force of Greater Milwaukee s website at Calendar of Events The 5 th at 5 events will always be on the 5th of each month except for July, / th instead of the 5 th at 5, 9 AM Tosa Parade Party, Home of Jerry Randall 07/05... Please wear your name tag. Directions: From Mequon Road (east or west), drive to Buntrock; go north, (becomes Green Bay Rd.) Turn right onto Elm. Continue to the park. See page 7 for sign-up. Deadline is July 15, Send your check and reservation to Cris Reischl, 7163 Horizon Dr., Greendale, WI (Note: Ambassador s meals are paid for) The Super-Regional FF Conference was Just Super!! By Gary Drescher Two club members, Dave Kalan and I, headed towards Cincinnati (actually Covington, Kentucky) to represent the Milwaukee club at the super-regional conference in late April. The goals of the conference were to develop and nurture new leaders, to energize our clubs, and to open our minds and hearts to new and exciting possibilities. These goals were met through a number of plenary and break-out sessions presented by leaders from the super region s clubs. Attendees learned about embracing change, developing leaders, setting club goals, and moving FFI into the future. Many ideas shared by speakers and participants have already been implemented in our Milwaukee club, thanks to our club leaders. There were also presentations by FFI employees, who shared where to find helpful information on the FFI website (e.g., the steps to take as journey coordinators and journey hosts). The keynote speaker holds several prominent positions in sister city partnerships, creating educational exchanges for students of all ages. He shared examples of how he turned comments such as no, it can t be done into the students will be coming next semester. Over 115 participants from 3 regions (Great Lakes, Midwest, & Southwest --29 clubs in all) shared in the camaraderie and resolved to improve FF at their local and regional levels. P.S. For 4 days before the conference, we were home-hosted by the enthusiastic Dayton, OH club, where we learned a lot about the Wright Brothers and aviation. Our hosts were new to FF.. 2
3 Fifth at Five Events Why volunteer? It is an easy activity to arrange so volunteer to plan an evening event. Pair up with another member to plan. Choose either your home or a local place to bring members together for a fun evening. If interested, contact Dale Harmelink at or dalelink627@gmail.com. Become one of the future volunteers: July 4th (note the date) Jerry Randall s home. Location: W. North Ave., Wauwatosa. Instead of the 5th, we ll be meeting on July 4th at the home of Jerry Randall for the 4 th of July Wauwatosa Parade Party. The parade starts at 9 a.m. at about 80th street and North Ave. and moves west to Mayfair, so Jerry s house is close to the end of the parade. It would be a good idea for guests to arrive by 9 a.m. to get situated on the lawn and get their snacks, etc. We recommend parking at Mayfair at the south end of the parking area and walking the block to Jerry's house, W. North Ave., on the south east corner of North Ave. and 103rd St. Bring a snack and a lawn chair. Aug. 5 th at 5 Bob & Nancy Mitchell home. Location: W289 N1336 Elmhurst Dr., Waukesha, WI We are located between the Hwy. SS exit 290 and the Hwy 83 exit 287 immediately south of I-94 on Elmhurst Rd. From the east on I-94 take exit 290. At the stop light turn left (south) to the end of the road about 1 block. Turn west on Silvernail Rd. and proceed 1 mile to stop sign. Turn left (south) on Elmhurst Rd. We are the first driveway on the left (actually two driveways) just passed the deer crossing sign. You will see pine trees, two red barns and an old stone house. From the west exit 287. Turn right and proceed to Hillside Rd. stop light. Turn left on to Hillside and proceed east (pass movie theater, Home Depot). At the first stop sign, Hillside Rd. becomes Silvernail Rd. Continue east to second stop sign which will be Elmhurst Rd., (Hwy G south). Turn right on Elmhurst and we are the first driveway on your left. See row of pines, and just past the deer crossing sign. There is an old stone house, and two red barns. Bring to share: appetizer or dessert or beverage soft drinks, iced tea etc. Bring your own favorite beverage. Sept. 5th at 5 Nancy Rubly s home Location: 2440 N Pilgrim Rd, Brookfield, Wi This is the first house north of North Ave, close to Parkside 23, across from Wirth Park. I am on a busy road so please park next door at Dixon Elementary School. There is a large well-lit parking lot. Walk over and down the drive toward the garage. Bring to share, (appetizer or dessert or beverage). An entre of pulled pork will be served. Now the members of the Lao Christian Church will cook a homemade Laotian dinner just for our Friendship Force members. Following the dinner, there will be a short cultural presentation on Laos and the Laotian Community in Milwaukee, a student group of musicians playing Lao instruments, a demonstration of ethnic dancing will be given and guest participation is encouraged! There is plenty of parking behind the church. Mark your calendar now. Watch the next newsletter for final details, reservation form and cost. Reservations will be required by September 15. Program, Oct Instead of Open World, Friendship Force International will be working with the Rumsfeld Foundation this year. FFGM will welcome five or six delegates from Central Asian countries. The 2018 program theme is Economic Development. The Rumsfeld Foundation was established in 2007 by Donald Rumsfeld, the former US Secretary of Defense and his wife, Joyce. The mission of the Rumsfeld Foundation: Encourages leadership, public service and free political and economic systems at home and abroad. Across our focus areas, we are committed to providing opportunities for rising leaders, honoring service to nation and to promoting liberty. Any member who wants to host delegates or be involved with planning the itinerary should call or Mary Hauser, the HC, at or mhauser2012@att.net. Indian Cooking Demo Sue Pack, FFGM Member, will present an Indian Food Demonstration that you won t want to miss. You are invited for this event taking place Oct. 29 th.
