2 In loving memory of Bruce Edward Thompson Dec. 6, 1926 May 20, 2011 In 1951, he founded a boys club called Lutheran Pioneers. This organization went national in 1954 and he served as the first chairman of the national council. He served as the national commander of the Lutheran Pioneers, Inc. for 31 years, then served on the council until he retired in 1989 and served emeritus until his death. He wrote the first five handbooks used by the boys. In 1964 he began a program for older Lutheran boys called the Voyageurs. Here high school boys could use their learned outdoor skills on a weeklong canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe area of northern Minnesota and southern Ontario. He led 16 such trips from 1964 to In 2007, he wrote a book titled Beginnings, which documented the first 25 years ( ) of this WELS Lutheran organization. Bruce and his wife Joyce devoted many years working and canoeing with kids and leaders, until his life no longer permitted it. He, his wife Joyce, and numerous other leaders held Leader Training Clinics that many of us attended, especially in the 60s 70s, and early 80s. When Bruce started the program in 1951 some of you were quite young. But many of you were kids in the Lutheran Pioneer program and became Junior Leaders, then Leaders (some with Jim and Linda White). Some of your kids were also in the program. We were all busy and great friendships were made lasting to retirement. Those truly were the best years of our life. vs USPS If you are receiving these newsletters by U.S. mail and can receive them by , please contact Mary Schwenke at pineridgepost@hotmail.com or Each newsletter costs 80 cents to mail. Help us so we can use the funds elsewhere. TO DO LIST NEED VOLUNTEERS Build a new backstop for the ball field Replace the roof on our sign at the top of the hill

3 Tables for the Dining Hall The Board of Directors has approved starting a fund to purchase new light weight tables for the dining hall. The old fold up tables are hard to handle and we don t want someone to get hurt in putting them up and down. The cost of the new tables is about $80.00 apiece and we would need about twelve. If you would like to donate to this fund, please send your donation to Beth Thornton marked Table Fund at 4247 Honeysuckle Ct, #F101, Sheboygan, WI To Do List Update Over the Memorial Day weekend, thanks to a number of volunteers, several projects were completed. The new 24 x 24 open air shelter with a 12 x 12 storage room has been completed near the archery targets. This will not only give the archers more room to store their equipment, but will also free up the storage room in the main shelter. Also, enough wood has been split to fill the wood shed to overflowing. A donation box will be erected at the wood shed for the convenience of the campers. Items for silent auction Harold Schmid has been in past years purchasing items for the silent auction. He is requesting some help for this year s auction at the Family Campout. If you have any items you would like to donate to the auction, please bring them to the Family Campout and give them to Harold on Friday. Your help is appreciated to raise funds for the camp ground.

4 Milwaukee District Boy Pioneers The Midwest Archery Camp for 2011 starts very early in most Pioneer Trains year. It is to be held at Pine Ridge on September 23rd through September 25th. Send any questions to me. My name is Phil Wagie, Milwaukee District and I m available to assist your train and you leaders in any way I can. address phil@wagie.org Home phone Cell phone Alert! Alert!
