3 Volume 5 Issue 10 Lions Support Victorian Bushfire Victims Recently the Lions Medical Research Foundation Skin Cancer Screening Committee made available a 7 kva generator to the Lions Club of Timboon in Victoria for use in the bushfire recovery. The generator was surplus to requirements for the Lion Skin Cancer Mobile Screening Unit. The unit will also assist Timboon Lions in catering for the fire victims. Lions Ian Tonkin from the Lions Club of McLaren Districts and John White of the Keith Lions, transported the generator from Adelaide to Mount Gambier yesterday. Lion Peter Pignotti generously provided the forklift to transfer the unit from one vehicle to the vehicle taking it on to Timboon. President Max Anderson of the Lions Club of Timboon transported the unit to Victoria. Max was delighted to be receiving the generator to assist in the bushfire recovery. Ross Parkinson Lions Club of Mt Gambier When Lions Clubs see a need, then work together, anything is possible Celebrating Milestones at Murray Bridge Celebrations all round at a recent meeting of Lions Club of Murray Bridge recently when a number of special dates all coincided. Zone Chairman Carolyn Kilpatrick was on hand to present service awards. An amazing 50 year chevron to Lion Max Thiele, and an equally distinguished 30 year Chevron to Secretary John Filmer. Both Lions have a proud history of service win their clubs. Equally momentous, the club took the opportunity to mark 3 special milestone birthdays. Lions Max celebrated 80 fabulous years, Lions Hylton and Lion Maurice both celebrated 70 trips around the sun. That evening a special bottle of port was presented to the meeting too. See page 6 for more details Be In It To Win It Message from IP Naresh Aggarwal Wherever we serve, we inspire others to make an impact. And when our clubs grow, our impact grows. 4 C2 NEWS Celebrating Service Michael ' Mick ' Murphy I met this delightful man at the Buronga Gol Gol Lions Club on a recent visit to New South Wales. Before I met Mick I had been told that Mick was leaving and that he was retiring from the role of treasurer. As a result. the usual jokes about how he financed his house and a new car emanated from the fact that Mick had been treasurer for more than twenty years. In fact Mick could not remember the exact number. Well done Mick. Enjoy the next chapter in your life DGE David Snook Beachport A Good News Story The McLaren Districts Lions Club recently hosted a diabetes awareness day in a large shopping centre in McLaren Vale. From the start we liaised with Diabetes SA and they could not have been more helpful. They supplied us with several boxes of brochures etc for distribution on the day as well as 2 health professionals who were present and worked with us between the hours of 10.30am and 3.30pm. They were of great assistance to many members of the public Recycle for Sight who presented with specific concerns. If any other clubs are looking to undertake a similar event I would strongly recommend they also make contact and work with Diabetes SA who have indicated they would be more than willing to do so. We commenced our display in the Coles shopping centre mall at 9.00am and intended to work through until 9.00pm as it was late night shopping that day however we finished early at about 7.30pm as there were very few shoppers about at this time. We had a roster of club members to staff the stall each undertaking about a 2 hour shift. We worked in pairs as any more would have been too many. During the day we spoke to nearly 100 members of the public and received some very complimentary feedback about the community service we were delivering. PDG Bryan Hearn McLaren Districts Lions Club Page 4 Sue and I recently gave a presentation on the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Project to a community group, called Healthy Lifestylers, at the Uniting Church Hall in Findon. The Lifestylers have been collecting used eyeglasses as a project. The presentation was well received by the 35 plus attendees. During question time a question was raised about Lions Cakes to which Sue responded by giving an amusing recollection of our visit to the Top Taste Factory a few years ago. At the conclusion, Lifestylers President, Fay Franks- Weniger, handed over 4 shopping bags full of used eyeglasses and presented Sue & I with a basket of fresh fruit. I presented President Fay with an eyeglass collection box & a Certificate of Appreciation. Although I ve taken a step back from Club duties and retired from Cabinet after almost 20 years of service I still continue to receive calls Australia wide for information on Lions & Lions Projects. I guess this is a legacy of being MD PR Chairman for 6 years and host of The World of Lions radio program on RPH1197 for 10 years. Picture shows PDG David & Lions Lady Sue accepting a basket of fresh fruit from Healthy Lifestylers President, Fay Franks-Weniger. PDG David Savage

6 C2 NEWS PORT returned to home PORT Sue & I won a prize in a raffle at our Club s Christmas dinner. It was a basket of goodies and weighed a tonne. It was so heavy we had to arrange for the Club strongman to carry it to our car. When we got home and unwrapped the basket and discovered it was made of porcelain thus accounting for the bulk of the weight. A rare and pleasant surprise contributed to the balance of the weight. It was a 1980 bottle of Tawny Port which was bottled by Santa Rosa Wines, Currency Creek, Goolwa. It was made for the 1980 District Convention held in Murray Bridge thirty eight years ago. I considered this to be a find of some significance and, rather than drink it, decided to return the Port to its home port. The District Governor at the time was Allen Walters from the West Beach Lions Club. Allen has since resigned. I hope his resignation didn t have anything to do with the Port. I rang the Murray Bridge Lions Club and spoke with Secretary John Filmer and offered the Port to his club, free of charge, if he could arrange for it to be picked up. Two weeks later Secretary John called and said he would pick it up on his way through. This he did and after Sue & I handed over the Port, John paused for a photograph to remember this momentous occasion and went on his merry way. I trust the Port arrived home safely and the Murray Bridge Lions Club didn t have too much trouble deciding what to do with it. Cheers!!! PDG David Savage Rock Plaque Centennial Community Legacy Project Page 6 Lions Club of McLaren Districts Inc. Over the six months, our legacy committee comprised of Wendy Datson, Brian Rayner, Mike Arnold and Selwyn Voss, have been working closely with Colin Mason and Andrew Smith from the City of Onkaparinga to place a large rock within The Lions Park at the corner of Sand and Kangarilla Roads McLaren Vale. The rock has a plaque to mark 100 years of Lions Clubs International and is the club s Centennial Community Legacy Project. The MC at the event was Melinda Fogden, Lions District 201 C2 Centennial Projects Officer Melinda spoke about Lions Clubs International Community Legacy Projects and other projects within our district. She thanked the council for the work they had done for this project specifically. picking a suitable rock, organising the making of the plaque with the supplier and placement of the rock. Melinda introduced Greg Pettman, a Charter Member of the Lions Club of McLaren Districts and Club President & Greg spoke about the history of the park and the members that were involved with it over the years. Lorraine Rosenberg, The Mayor, City of Onkaparinga, and a member of the Lions Club of Noarlunga-Morphett Vale, spoke on behalf of the council. To conclude the event Melinda and Mayor Rosenberg unveiled the plaque. The City of Onkaparinga has undertaken work in the last twelve months which included:- park signage has been taken away painted and stained posts have been replaced for signage and BBQ shed; painting of toilet block removal of old rusty bin holders enlargement of BBQ slab repairs to the boundary fencing. The council has also advised us that the park is to have a major upgrade in approximately two years which will include new fencing, more playground equipment, among other things. 7 Volume 5 Issue 10 Youth of the Year State Final The District YOTY Final held at the Charles Hawker Conference Centre at Urrbrae proved a great venue and location, certainly a superb auditorium for such a prestigious Lions event. The audience of around was treated to empowering performances by all five contestants - Overall Winner Taya Harding (Kingston) Public Speaking Winner Luke Hensel (Berri) Claire Noack (Mitcham) Nicholas faffio Opie (Mildura) Chelsea Barber (Mannum) Each contestant sailed through the impromptus, which were very good questions, in full time or a second or so under. Each covered quite an interesting and broad-minded view of the topic with each question. Their prepared speeches covered in-depth topics, unlike the last few years where, by coincidence, similar topics were tackled. Each student engaged the audience well, captured their attention from the start and each certainly empowered the audience. All five contestants were winners. As the YOTY slogan reminds us, You just can t lose. Our contestants were a very worthy group and any could have been winners of the event. The Chairman of the judging panel remarked that their job was difficult. with the call so close. Those advancing to the State Final at Gumeracha on Saturday April 7th are Taya, Luke and Claire. On behalf of C2, I wish them every success. This is an event worth attending. All clubs will have received the Invitations which I trust will be circulated to all members. Our students need our support whether or not they are from your own club. We hope to see your there at the State Final Ann Hughes District YOTY Chairman State Final Date: Saturday April 7 th 2018 Venue: Gumeracha Town Hall Main Rd Gumeracha Contact State YOTY Chairman PDG Ken Bradford Phone (08) Mobile alonken@westnet.com.au Interesting Guest Speaker Kate is the Clinical Director for Southern Adelaide Palliative Services. On Wednesday 21 March, 2018 it was great to have Kate address members of Southern Adelaide Lions Clubs at a dinner at McLaren Flat hosted by the Lions Club of McLaren Districts and attended by Lions from Aberfoyle, Noarlunga/Morphett Vale, Hallett Cove and Yankalilla. Lions Clubs in the region have agreed to provide funds towards purchase of a Princess Chair for use at the Laurel Hospice and also for people receiving palliative care in their homes. A contribution towards the chair is also made by Australian Lions Foundation..

8 C2 NEWS Marion Club Helps Operation Flinders OPERATION FLINDERS is a SA Organisation that has been operating for 25 years and has a role in assisting Youth at Risk Youth who have become disconnected. It may be a case of having lost one or both parents. Some may have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused by people they trusted. Others have broken the Law or are at risk of doing so. From their Camp Yankaninna Station located in the far north Flinders Ranges, some 585klms north of Adelaide, Operation Flinders conducts five exercises per year to which approximately 100 Youth attend and they share many activities and experiences. Late last year, PDG Bob Korotcoff was fortunate to be invited to attend a Visitor s week-end to Yankaninna during the running of an Exercise and witnessed just what a wonderful facility this is. Upon his return, Bob spoke to his Lions Club MARION a Club that had made a financial donation to OP for many years, and as a result, the MARION Lions Club has recently donated a new Trailer to OP. The cost of the Trailer was $8, which included a Grant from ALF of $4, If any Lions Club would like a Guest Speaker from Operation Flinders to talk to their Club, please contact: JRobran@operationflinders.org submitted Yankalilla Sausage Sizzle for ALF Congratulations to Yankalilla Loins for their wonderful initiative over a couple of weekends to raise money at Normanville and Yankalilla for the Australian Lions Foundation Disaster Appeal. The obligatory Lions sausage sizzles attracted many happy customers who had a sausage in return for a donation to the Appeal and there were lots of people who were just happy to make a donation. Almost $1600 was raised over the 2 events allowing the club to send those funds on to help those in need following the recent floods, fires and cyclone in Australia. Club members helped out on the BBQ, rattling collection tins or working the bingo stall. Pa

Nairne Lions Awareness Day Nairne Lions Club manned a stall outside the Post Office on the morning of Saturday 3rd, as part of Lion Awareness Day. The club received some 1/2 dozen serious responses from members of the public and will follow them up. Noted feature was enquiries from residents who have just moved to Nairne. 10 C2 NEWS Lucindale Field Days The public see 2 big days of amazing events. The Lions Clubs who provide the catering and other services have 3 big days, but the Lions Club of Lucindale are working all year round. I hazard to say they are planning for 2019 Field Days right now. Over the 2 big days, over 21,000 general public attended the Yakka Park Site for the 40 th Annual Lucindale Field Days run by the Lions Club of Lucindale In excess of 600 exhibitors created booths or sites to encourage visitors to view their goods or products. Lions Clubs from throughout the Lower South East provided people power to run the multiple food vans and stalls dotted throughout the field days site. Many other community groups tool the opportunity to raise funds provided by the Lions Club of Lucindale by providing more catering, manning the gates, and assisting with the nitty gritty of running such a huge event Our Skin Cancer Screening Unit was busy for 3 days, being set up the day prior to the Field Days to allow stall holders who were setting up to take the opportunity to have a skin check. Graeme and the Membership team manned an information display stand and details of a number of people interested in joining were collected. Congratulations to the Lucindale Lions Club on their ever growing event. The club will be out in force again this month hosting a Music Festival. Page 10

12 C2 NEWS Lions Murray Bridge Ski For Life Lions Club of Murray Bridge catered for 150 Ski for Life team members recently. Ski for Life raises funds for the prevention of male suicide. The groups waterski 450 kilometres between Murray Bridge and Renmark on the Murray River over three days, to raise awareness and funds for the prevention of men's suicide. DGE David Snook and Lioness Pam were acting as support for the Ski Team and took the opportunity to thank the Murray Bridge Club. Millicent Lionesses - Super cycle ride This month 40 riders left Melbourne and travelled via the coast, through Mt Gambier and on to Adelaide. The SuperCycle Team of 40 did this hard slog to raise funds for the Mercer Under Our Roof homes which are used by country patients who need to travel to Adelaide s Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Oncology Treatments The Lioness Club was well aware of these homes as one of their members had previously used the homes during treatment and had asked the club to consider supporting the homes. When asked to provide a morning tea break for the riders, the Lioness Club cranked into gear cooking and preparing high calorie foods for the riders to pump up their energy stores. The club also took the opportunity to add to the fundraising efforts of the team with a cheque for $ presented to the organisers by Treasurer Beccy Meningie Clean up Australia Day Clean up Australia Day this year was on Sunday March 4th. Many clubs around Australia and our District took part in the initiative to rid the road sides, rivers and parks of rubbish. Members bagged the rubbish and transported it to the local waste handling depot Once the collection was completed members enjoyed a well deserved coffee. One such club was the Lions Club of Meningie. Members donned their hi-viz jackets, gloves hats and sunscreen, grabbed a bag and tools and took off to collect rubbish from around their area. Sadly the members found much more rubbish than they had in previous years. Page 12

13 Volume 5 Issue 10 Goolwa Auction Goolwa Lions held another other of their very successful Auctions on the 10th of March. Members not only managed to sell the auction goods to the eager bidders, but also provided a sausage sizzle, and hot and cold drink to make sure that the bidding public had not need to go elsewhere.!! Of course the club also opened their backed book shed making it a one stop shop for all prospective bargain hunters. Robe Lions Awareness Day Another club to take part in Lions Awareness Day on March 3rd was the Lions Club of Robe. Lions members took the opportunity of enjoying the sunshine and sharing a FREE sausage with the Community. Almost 100 sausages were given away and not surprisingly, the donation tin finished with over $100 showing the respect our Organisation and Club holds. A few prospective members were identified. A great effort from the Robe club Hahndorf When you can redeem 10c for every can bottle or carton collected, this becomes quite a lucrative deal. Members of the Lions Club of Hahndorf have a regular monthly collection and while it is definitely a great fundraiser, it is also a great day for fellowship. When service events become fun events, why wouldn t you join the fun? Page 13

The City of Darwin is modern, well looked after, feel good place for all. Visit the waterfront, the NT Museum & Art Gallery, or enjoy the Mindil Beach sunsets. Awarded Australia s best fish & chips is Frying Nemo at Tipperary Waters. Great location outside, next to a marina with world class wine and craft beer on tap! Honestly! Stay in Darwin to check out East Point Reserve or Charles Darwin National Park.
