1 28 July 2018 Issue 99 POP UP NEWS Mapleton, Queensland New this Week APIA will give a short talk on Insurance schemes for pensioners and be available for discussion at the Mapleton Bowls Club on Tuesday 17 July. The club would like a good turnout on this occasion so please put it in your diary. All visitors are most welcome. Please arrive at 4.15pm. Plastic Free July Every July, over a million people around the world participate in Plastic Free July, a challenge to refuse single-use plastics for one whole month. We thought Mapletonians might be up to the challenge and have listed a few tips to get started * BYO shopping bag and reusable produce bag for fruit and veg ( or skip them entirely never could understand why a hand of bananas need to be bagged ) * Use a refillable bottle instead of buying bottled water * Get a Keepcup and encourage your local coffee shop to provide discounts for customers with their own refillable mugs. ( or at least refuse the plastic top and stirrer with your takeaway ) Myer has a good range of specially designed cups and mugs which are barista friendly * When you have the choice, choose products packaged in cardboard or glass rather than plastic * Refuse plastic straws and ask drink outlets to get rid of them altogether * Shop in bulk. Nambour has a new bulk foods store the Wellness Mill opposite Coles, as well as Nambour Organic Provisions in Nambour Heights. Both provide paper bags or are happy for customers to bring their own containers.htt p:// Photo Caption Another good concert to support the Nambour Hear and Say Centre, which provides cochlear implants for deaf children. Afternoon tea provided. Tickets are available from Rosetta s Bookshop, Maleny. Quota Club of Maleny fundraiser.

Winners with a 2plus27 were Dick van Zandan, Graham Patterson and Mike Linfoot. Runners up with a plus 21 in the second game was Joy Lilley and Sandra Jordan. Photo Caption 'The Song Keepers' screening for NAIDOC Week in Nambour on 8 July The Australian documentary 'The Song Keepers' will be screening at Majestic Cinemas in Nambour this Sunday at 4.40pm as part of NAIDOC Week. The film tells the uplifting story of the Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir, which includes two men, and how they have preserved century-old German baroque hymns in their Aboriginal languages. The Central Desert women learned the hymns from Lutheran missionaries who arrived in Central Australia in the 19th century. The choir's 'master' Morris Stuart - a Caribbean-born, London-raised former pastor who moved to Australia with his family - has worked with choirs around

3 the world. He encouraged and developed the choir and together they visited Germany, bringing home a collection of 'lost' and early romantic hymns of the German Lutheran church. The choir featured on ABC's Australian Story recently. If you love choral singing or are in a choir you should enjoy this warm story. Visit for more details. Mapleton community Library: July Art display NAIDOC Week. Will be on display all month plus books featuring Aboriginal writers. Mapleton Foundation Over the past 12 months a number of community members have suggested setting up a community foundation similar to the Buderium Foundation.
