Many say Lions is the best kept secret so here is the opportunity to tell our wonderful story of serving your Communities Zone Chairpersons were given the new PR materials at the Mount Gambier Cabinet Meeting so please make contact if you need PR materials. The More Than Sausages campaign is centred around what the public perceives as our major fundraising event, but as Clubs and Members we need to promote how the funds are utilised in Communities. Can you image what it would be like in your town or suburb if the Lions Club was not there or suddenly closed down? Next time you have a major event perhaps consider setting up a display with information available to be distributed, promoting what your club does for the local community. Global Membership Coordinator Graeme Botting is only a phone call away to assist. If you have an event planned why not take a video (mobile phones are ok) and enter the Happiest Lions Club Competition? See details on the MD Website and entries close 30 th March. As I travel around I can t but notice the welcoming signs on the entrance to Towns and Suburbs. Please consider setting up a large sign or if already erected do they need replacing. Contact MD Lions Shop for Signage. Congratulations to Dean Harris from the Lions Club of Marion for attending a LCI Leadership Training Course in Brisbane during February. Congratulations also to Selwyn Voss from the Lions Club McLaren & Districts on being accepted into the LCI Emerging Lions Leadership Institute to be held in Christchurch New Zealand April 6 th 8 th. Are club treasurers aware that statements are now available on MyLCI so there is no need to wait for the snail mail? In May many Lions will be attending the Multiple District Convention in tropical Townsville Qld. If you are considering going the Registration forms are out and close on Friday 20 th April. 3 Volume 5 Issue 9 Broken Hill Erects New Signs Do you remember we recently asked you to look at the signage leading into your town or any other signage you had up within your town? The Broken Hill Lions Club certainly took that to heart. They have erected new signage on the three major highways leading into Broken Hill. They wanted to let the local community and travellers know that Lions are active in the Broken Hill community, Negotiations with the local council are necessary for any road signs. Broken Hill Lions Club holds its dinner meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month Lions travelling through Broken Hill are most welcome to join them for dinner and good fellowship. Nightcliff Helps Timor Village The Lions Club of Darwin Nightcliff recently presented a laptop to Jonathon Polke and were thrilled to have an opportunity to make a positive contribution to a Timor community. Timor Aid Worker Johathon accepted the donation and explained that the laptop was going to be taken to a village in Timor where a team is creating a Community Centre for the village. Timor village will benefit from Darwin Nightcliff donation Defence Force Welcomed to Darwin Our defence force personnel are always on the move, and moving to a new city or state can be a little overwhelming. Darwin in one of many places in Australia where defence personnel are housed. Their community organisation organises a welcome to Darwin Day at the local convention centre. This year members of the Litchfield Club set up a stall and promoted a number of Lions Projects. Lions Hearing Dogs, Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta, being at the forefront. President Chris Blackham -Davison was there with his dog Tamari and we hear the Tamari was hap- py to lap up all the attention she gained. Of course the Cakes and Mints programs were showcased too. 4 C2 NEWS Campus Club Information Night This club is unique in its everchanging membership The Flinders University Student Association recently awarded the Flinders University Lions Campus Club with an award for The Best New Club of 2017 During O (Orientation) Week all students are invited to find out about a comprehensive program of social and academic activities to aid the transition into University life. Club members were supported by District GMT members who helped to set up an information booth and attended and information evening. The GMT assisted the current members to generate interest in potentially joining the Campus Club and with more general information about Lions Clubs International. There was lots of interest from university students and the club is excited to begin with a new membership influx with new members reflecting the multicultural student body at the university. This club is unique in that the membership goes through annual change as members finish their studies and move away from the University base. The club thanked their Guiding Lions for their support, especially answering all the questions. Love Was In The Air On the weekend prior to Valentines day both Millicent and Mount Gambier Clubs were asked to assist at regional weddings. When the bride and groom both have a real fondness for fresh hot donuts and they knew were they could organise those to be made, they asked Millicent Lions to provided the wedding cake a non stop supply of fresh hot donuts Meanwhile Mt Gambier s van was flat out cooking and serving the wedding celebratory food at the famous Blok Gardens wedding venue just outside Mt Gambier. 5 Volume 5 Issue 9 Berri Supports Cancer Lodges The Berri Lions club was absolutely delighted to assist local identity and frequent Santa s Helper Barry Galliford in his fundraising efforts for the SA Cancer Council Flinders Lodge. Local identity Barry, who was often mistaken for the famous man in red with his luxurious hair and beard, wanted to raise enough money to fit out two rooms with new beds. He succumbed to the clippers and shears of local barber Joanne and was soon quite unrecognizable. Berri Lions President Theresa was thrilled to be able to add to the fundraising efforts and the club s donation meant that not only did Barry achieve his goal of being able to fit out two rooms he raised enough to fit out four. The before and after photos. Great planning to do this amazing Shave Fundraiser in early February Barry, as that gives you a few months to grow it back to be able to help out the man in red again this Christmas!! Zone 11 Centennial Project Dedicated Four years in the planning with the support of the City of Mount Gambier has finally come to fruition with the formal opening and dedication of Lions Centennial Park on Saturday 3rd February. The project encompasses a BBQ pavilion with covered seating and a wall that has been set with memorial plaques honouring the service of treasured departed members. The memorial wall was formally dedicated by Lion Allen Woodham OAM with many members of their families in attendance. Presidents from participating Zone 11 Lions Clubs assisted Project Chairman Peter Pignotti and Mayor Andrew Lee to cut the ceremonial ribbon. Representatives from the Zone 11 Clubs were Port MacDonnell and District Lions Club President Brian Collins; Kalangadoo Lions Club President Wolfgang Gunther, Gambier City Lions Club President Wilf Nitschke, Lions Club of Mount Gambier President Malcolm Laslett; Lioness Club of Mount Gambier President Gayle Green, and Gambier City Leo's Club Secretary Connor Wilson, Page 5

8 C2 NEWS Youth of the Year Club Finals Club finals are all finalising. I wish I could say it s been a bumper year for clubs to enter the Program. Having distributed around 34 packs, 16 registrations with three clubs still to register a big disappointment in the club participation stakes. There are some glaring problems - Difficulty at the school level, if the principal is not interested then, nothing happens. Getting that foot in the door is probably the hardest part of the exercise. Is your Club YOTY person the right person for the job? Sound PR skllls is an advantage. Don t throw a member into the job, just to fill the position. A Club YOTY Committee is working well for some of our clubs. That way, the load is shared with two or more other members. Non- YOTY Clubs with one or more secondary institutions on their doorstep ought to give YOTY a go. The dreaded March Long weekend for the Regionals is proving to be detrimental to attracting entrants at the Club level. I have set the cogs in motion to make change to the Rules!!!. With some juggling of the dates, for the Regionals by a week later, then District and State finals will be a week later, depending on the Easter break. It will work So Watch this space in Remember to advertise your YOTY event out in the local community, send out invitations to the local groups, school newsletters, the noticeboards and so on. The students need a crowd, so rally the troops. Your club needs a crowd to showcase its activities, successes and future projects. Any final is a great opportunity to do this. We only have 4-5 clubs who run their final between August and December. Why not start making a move to schools at the end of July with an introductory letter and appointment request. Get that foot in the door and start the ball rolling. Don t forget to share your photos of your YOTY finals, here and on the YOTY Facebook page. Anne Hughes District Chairman Pa

Barmera Lions were on hand to sort out the catering and keep everyone well fed and watered Naracoorte Taste Festival Naracoorte s Taste the Limestone Coast Festival was an outstanding success this year with an increase of 35% in crowd numbers and a record number of stall holders. They were successful in selling all 3,000 tickets for The Taste Festival Raffle at $2 each the first prize being A Taste of New Zealand Package worth $2,500 Page 9

10 C2 NEWS Renmark Lions Awareness Day Club members believe this may well be the best investment the club has made in a long time. The Lions Club of Renmark sponsored a FREE FAMILY FUN DAY at RENMARK SWIMMING CENTRE to celebrate Lions Australia Awareness Day. The club decided to host this community event to give something back to their community for their on-going support for their club, and to show the community some of the amazing work they have done during their 54 years of existence in Renmark. At a recent meeting, there was much discussion about what the club could do to celebrate this special day. Club member, Lion John Pavlenko suggested a family day out at the local swimming pool. This suggestion was put to the management of the pool, who were very excited and accepting of the idea. A small sub-committee/ working party of club members was formed to put it together. Over a 4 week period the event was promoted with posters and flyers distributed around the town, with local schools promoting it in their newsletters, and promotions on social media, radio and press resulting a most successful event. Members of the public of all ages were invited to attend this FREE community event on Saturday, 3rd March from 12 noon till 7.00pm. Fortunately, on the day the weather was perfect. (35C and not a cloud in the sky). Admission to the pool was FREE during this time. Renmark Lions provided a FREE Sausage Sizzle and Donuts during the day, with many fun activities for all age groups. There was entertainment by acoustic singer Trick, Page 10

11 Volume 5 Issue 9 Renmark Lions Awareness Day Cont... 2 Jumping Castles, a Dunking Machine, Face Painting, a Clown, Putt-Putt Golf and games/painting activities for the younger age group. Approx. 430 people attended during the day with over 1400 sausages and approx donuts being cooked by approx 20 club members and partners and other helpers. This was a huge effort by all who assisted on the day. The end result was a fantastic event which was much appreciated by the public, confirmed by the numerous positive comments about the club on the day and subsequently in social media. The club had a display of the latest Lions Posters and Brochures, together with photos of past events held by the Renmark Club. Adjacent to the display they set up a separate marquee to promote membership of Lions. They received several enquiries which will be followed up by their Membership Team. At the end of the day, the club spent in excess of $3000 on the event to ensure its success. It has certainly put The Lions Club of Renmark in a very positive light amongst their local community. Club members believe this may well be the best investment the club has made in a long time. Already there is discussion about making it an annual event!! Graham Edwards Renmark Congratulations on the success of this fabulous initiative Renmark Editor Page 11

12 C2 NEWS Commonwealth Games Baton Relay The honour of carrying the torch in the Queens Baton Relay in the lead up to this year s Commonwealth Games is not one that is given lightly. As the torch made its way through Mildura Immediate Past President Colin Watson stepped into place and completed his section of the relay. Lionsonoz in Action Page 12 Members of Australian Lionsonoz are always there to assist Main Stream Lions Clubs in their projects. Lion Warren White was visiting Lake Cathie when he heard about a BBQ project in which the local Lions Club was involved. The Lake Cathie Lions Club needed support so Australian Lionsonoz member stepped in and helped. Lake Cathie Lions main income involves BBQs at Woolworths, Bunnings and their own major events Visiting Lions are always welcome to lend a hand as the Lake Cathie Lions Club is not big in numbers but big in spirit. Australian Lionsonoz does not conduct its own fund raising projects, due to the fact that they have members in every state of Australia, so they assist the local Lions Clubs wherever they find themselves. In this way they earn Lions Pay. (Service Hours). If you hear of Lionsonoz members in your area, don t hesitate to get in touch with them and invite them to help out at your next project.
