I must take this opportunity to thank DG Megan Butler and Peter Korndorfer for their hospitality at the C1 Convention held early in October. We also had the pleasure of being guests of DG Pat Mills at the V5 Convention. It was a most enjoyable convention and it was pleasing to see so many clubs in the Parade of Club Banners. The first C2 Convention to be held in Adelaide for quite some time was a huge success and I wish to thank everyone who contacted myself or a member of the hosting committee for your positive feedback. With First International Vice President Gudrun Yngvadottir and PID Jon Bjarni Thor present for the entire weekend it made it that much more special. A report from Gudrun can be found in the newsletter. Frank and I had the pleasure of hosting Gudrun & Jon Bjarni for the week leading up to the convention. Visits were arranged to a Business meeting at the Lions Club of Hallett Cove and the Anzac Memorial, Government House to present a Melvin Jones to His Excellency the Honourable Hiew van Le AC, Foodbank SA District project administered by the Lions Club of Noarlunga Morphett Vale. Our visitors enjoyed a visit to the Hearing Dogs Centre at Verdun and PID Jon Bjarni was rather pleased to have the newest trainee named after him. At Convention we heard from PCC David Skinner about the proposed changes to MD Council, Vikki Bedford spoke on her family s journey with daughter Zoe and childhood cancer, CEO of Hearing Dogs David Horne and Lisa Sprlyan presented on the Orange Sky Laundry project, helping the homeless to wash their clothes at a mobile laundry van. We also saw the addition of the Mad Minute project supported by the Lions Club of Mount Gambier. This is a great public speaking format for year 5 students. Any Club wishing to participate please contact the Mount Gambier Club for more details. It was also agreed by delegates that the Skin Cancer Screening Unit project be presented at MD Convention in Townsville as a Category B project. A huge congratulations to the members of host Club Edwardstown, and Chairperson PDG Don Burge for his attention to detail ensuring a very successful convention. Members are reminded that next years convention is in Darwin and we wish them all the best with their preparations. The convention weekend began with a Cabinet Meeting day during which Gudrun and Jon joined us briefly, before a civic reception at the home of Adj Assoc Prof Annabel Digance MP The Convention opened in spectacular style with a rousing flag ceremony and a poignant memorial service. The evening concluded with entertainment by the vocal group Voice of Transition Saturday was the start of the business session with Chairperson Convention Chair Don Burge keeping the speakers in line. Nomination, and Candidate addresses for officer roles were completed in the morning. A key note address by IVIP Gudrun and a display of our Hearing Dogs by Executive Office David Horne took us to the lunch time voting session After the lunch break Key Note speaker Mrs Vikki Bedford gave amazing insight into her families journey with Childhood Cancer. 5 Volume 5 Issue 5 Convention Highlights Saturday evening was the Convention Banquet where our venue was transformed. Everyone dressing in the Black and White theme. The Toast to Lions International was proposed by Annabel Digance, and the Response made by Dr Jon Bjarni before a wonderful meal was served and attendees kicked up their heels to the smooth stylings of The Groove Brother and Soul Sister. During the night a number of Silent Auction lots were on offer and some beautiful raffle prizes. A bright and early Call to Order on Sunday morning saw Key Note Speaker Lisa Sprlyan from Orange Sky laundry van for the homeless programme explaining how the program originated and their plans for the future. During the morning tea break conventioneers took the time to visit the Skin Cancer Screening Unit which was parked in the carpark for the day, and to view the Orange Sky Laundry vehicle. During other breaks conventioneers could view the various presentation booths from the District Foundations in the foyer, where you could find Hearing Dog Calendars, Lions Mints and cakes and purchase tickets in Tony Christmas s famous Iced Cake raffle. Key Note Speaker PCC David Skinner returned to the rostrum to take us on an interesting tour of American History which has attendees quite curious until a surprising twist at the end of his presentation had us all amazed. After morning tea, DG Judy, 1IVIP Gudrun, PID Jon Bjarni and PCC David all took part in a QA session. The spirited session had some interesting questions and a few quite difficult ones. A presentation from 2018 Convention hosts Darwin Clubs took us to the final flag ceremony where our fabulous Convention Hosts Edwardstown Lions passed the flag set over to the Darwin contingent for safe keeping until next year. 6 C2 News Lions Mad Minute New District Project To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the story here. The 2017 District 201 C2 convention has agreed that Lions Mad Minute become a District project for the next three years. This impromptu public speaking competition aimed at year five students has been refined over the last five years. Over this time over 4,000 primary students have received a Lions Mad Minute Participation Certificate and in 2017, 10 Lions Clubs in the Limestone Coast (Zones 10 & 11), ran the competition in 34 schools with 51 classes participating. The plan over the next three years is to greatly expand the competition, starting gradually next year then offering this exciting competition to more schools and classes as we all gain further experience. Clubs will be asked to nominate a Lions Mad Minute Liaison Officer (L.M.M.L.O.) who will then be offered support from a team of Lions from the Limestone Coast and on line support. The project is calendar year based and next year will begin in February when each clubs L.M.M.L.O. will be asked to approach one school and identify one class to be involved. Ahead of this contact each L.M.M.L.O. will be provided with supporting material to assist them in introducing the programme to the school. Some Clubs may choose to offer the initiative to more than one class in schools that have multiple year five and mixed year five classes or approach more than one school, but using 2018 as a trial year, with a plan to expand the project over following years may work better. A running sheet will be provided to each L.M.M.L.O. and support materials provided as needed. The class base competition is usually run in week seven of term two, this fitting in with the school curriculum. During the first week of term two supporting materials and the questions to be used in the competition are provided to each class teacher so they can be used by the class in preparation ahead of the judging. It would usually be the case that the L.M.M.L.O. is one of the judges and they would recruit a second judge, assistance along with the standard judging proforma, will then be provided to judges as needed. The plan next year is to develop a buddy system where experienced Lions from one of 10 Lions Clubs in the Limestone Coast is matched with new L.M.M.L.Os. All clubs will be approached in the near future with a request that they be involved next year and nominate an L.M.M.L.O. to get things rolling. Rory MeEwen Lions Club of Mount Gambier Page 6

7 Volume 5 Issue 5 Zone 10 Centennial BBQ at Kingston Clubs from Zone 10 in the Limestone Coast decided that a casual family day BBQ with all clubs from the zone would be a great way to celebrate the Centennial of Lions International. Lions Club of Kingston were quick to offer their club as host for the function and members provided the BBQ for the day. Other clubs organised amazing home made sweets and various flavoured popcorn, and tea and coffee. Lions, Lionesses and families gathered in Kingston on a lovely spring day for a day of fellowship. Kingston Area School s Pedal Prix team members gave those in attendance a demonstration of the amazing speeds the recumbent bikes can achieve. The vehicles had just taken part in the 24 hour races the week prior and the bikes were showing their scars. Kingston President Bob Hancock presented a cheque to the team to assist with the ongoing costs of bike maintenance. President Bob took the opportunity to present a club banner to Beachport President Bod to begin the process of replacing their burned banner collection. Zone Chairman Keith Field thanked all for attending the day and is was widely suggested that the idea of making this an annual event was suggested by those in attendance, and it will definitely be on the agenda for the next Zone Meeting. Displaying Peace Poster Entries What do you do with all your Peace Poster entries? The Lioness Club of Mount Gambier gathers all their entries and displays them in a large public space in the main street of Mt Gambier called The Main. Members of the public are Page 7 encouraged to vote for a peoples choice winner by simple means of a gold coin donation. How s that for a Win Win situation? The club gathers some funds for this and other projects and also manages to do valuable PR in the meantime. Well done ladies!

New Work Benches for Aged Care Facility When the need for work benches at St Mary s Aged Care Facility in Mt Gambier came to light, Mt Gambier Lions quickly helped out. I PP Rory donated the hardwood for the benches and Lion Brendon & Lion Steve built them. The purpose of the work benches is to encourage a meaningful hands on involvement by the male residents who have previously been involved in trades. Lions are very pleased to be given the opportunity to be involved in this worthwhile project. Page 9

With many working bee s to come, they hope to see it in service for the summer period. How s Your Sign? Is It Time To Update? One of our best advertisements are our street signs that let people know that there is a Lions Club in the town. It is a well recognised emblem and well respected Take some time to review the signs in your town. Are they up to date? (remember the official logo is now the 2 colour logo) Is the logo in need of some TLC Can you read the meeting information on the sign? Could the faded and illegible Lions Club sign below possibly be your sign? Our branding needs to be clear and vibrant. In our Centennial Year perhaps your club could take some time to review how your signage looks. Page 10

13 Volume 5 Issue 5 Murray Bridge Lions The much awaited official opening of the White Park community Clubrooms extension came on October 6 th. Over a period of four years the Lions club, Council and the Murraylands U3A Group formed a strong alliance to complete this project and provide the necessary funding. Lions and U3A now have a permanent home with the Lions barbecue trailer safely housed in the rear garage. October has been a busy month for the club. Apart from four members attending the Convention, a good crowd attended the Picnic in the Park at the Swanport Reserve for some well - earned relaxation and fellowship. This event was followed by six members attending the annual Combined Service Clubs dinner at the local Bowling club. On October 25 th the club membership grew by two new members being inducted by Lion Ann Hughes. Lions Lesley Inglis and Peter Coutts were sponsored by Lions Ian Hollick and Lyn Wells, respectively. Prior to the Induction, guest speakers from the local branch of Connect Hearing, provided a most informative and easy to understand address with a Power Point presentation. This alerted several members to attend hearing checks within the week. 14 C2 News Tribute in Parliament Dr Bob Coulthard (Excerpt from Hansard) Sam Duluk, Member for Davenport HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY Thursday, 19 October 2017 DR BOB COULTHARD AM Mr DULUK (Davenport) (16:19): I rise today to acknowledge, with great sadness and respect, the passing of Dr Bob Coulthard AM. Dr Bob was truly an extraordinary man. The tributes that have flown from across Australia and around the globe are testament to the overwhelming respect and love for Dr Bob and recognition for his considerable achievements. In their tribute, Lions Australia notes: Organisations have their treasures, their icons and legends. Dr Bob is one of these and will remain alive in our history and hearts. Dr Bob is one of the best known and respected members of Lions organisations in Australia and overseas. He joined the Lions Club of Marion, South Australia, in 1963 and served continuously and actively from that time. He served as president, district governor and council chairman, but it was his sight-saving activities that established him as a Lion of immense stature and contribution. In 1965, together with the former Liberal premier Dr David Tonkin, Dr Bob helped organise the first major Lions sight project in South Australia, a week-long program of glaucoma screening and education about preventable blindness. He introduced amblyopia (lazy eye) awareness to Adelaide kindergartens in 1971, which was later expanded throughout South Australia and the Northern Territory. Over the next 15 years, he conducted regular screenings for clubs in several districts, with over 600,000 tests completed in that time. The Lions Professional Chair of Ophthalmology at Flinders University is largely a result of his leadership in helping to raise the funds to endow that appointment, but it was his election to the Lions International Board in 1988 that would lead to his global legacy. At his first board meeting, he put forward a plan to establish a worldwide sight conservation program, known as SightFirst. It has become one of the largest international sight-related programs and has put us on the path to eradicating preventable blindness around the globe. Millions of people owe their sight to the efforts of Dr Bob and others who were able to convince the Lions Club International Board that a worldwide fundraising campaign to combat preventable blindness was practical and achievable. I understand that more than $US400 million has been raised throughout the Sight- First campaign. Many people have benefited greatly by the support, leadership and knowledge of this great man, and it is clear from speaking to those who knew him and from the tributes that have flowed since his passing that he was always humble and an old-school gentleman. He was a friend and mentor to many and will be sorely missed. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife, Jill, and to their family and my entire community in Blackwood, where I know that Dr Bob was such an active member. Dr Bob was an outstanding Lion, inspiring in the spirit of his service to others. It is a spirit that fortunately lives on through the local Lions clubs in South Australia and around Australia, which make a significant and exceptional contribution to their immediate communities. Lions is always helping those who are less fortunate and in need all around the world. This year, Lions is celebrating 100 years of service in countries and communities across the globe. In my community, I am very fortunate to have three Lions clubs: my own club (Aberfoyle and Districts), Mitcham and the Lions Club of Blackwood. The Lions Club of Blackwood has been around since They are best known for leading the annual Blackwood Christmas Pageant, a massive yet successful undertaking. It is the second oldest Christmas pageant in South Australia, behind only the Adelaide Christmas Pageant. The Blackwood pageant attracts over 10,000 spectators every year and has more than 1,000 participants. My community is certainly looking forward to the 2017 edition of the Blackwood Christmas Pageant, which this year will be held on 1 December. Additionally, in my community the Lions members can be found every Saturday morning at the club's bargain centre in Eden Hills where they sell a large range of donated items at incredibly cheap prices. Last year, they raised over $115,000 for the community, which has gone back to supporting grassroots organisations, individuals and deserving groups. Since its inception, the bargain centre has achieved sales of almost $2½ million. It is important that we thank and recognise not only the Lions clubs and their members for their outstanding efforts but also the nearly 400 community volunteers who help Blackwood Lions each year and the generosity of local residents who help make the fundraising efforts possible. In their centenary year, let's remember the Lions motto: where there's a need, there's a Lion. Fifty-Third Parliament, Second Session, Parliamentary Debates (Hansard), pp Page 14

15 Volume 5 Issue 5 GST Coordinator Report Hello fellow Lions, this is my first report since DG Judy Glastonbury asked me to take up the role of GST Coordinator, (a newly created role introduced in Chicago in June). Information for this new position has been slowly filtering through, now our convention is over we need to start promoting its service and supporting LCIF. In the position of GST my role is to inspire and motivate service, we can all do this in our Clubs. Firstly we need to nominate someone in our clubs to represent GST and share information, so we all can as a zone and district share our progress and success. It s important to focus on LCIF and the 5 major projects: Vision: All clubs can collect and recycle glasses and now hearing aids. Also as Lions we can all donate to Lions Save Sight which has helped over 30 million people. Environment: Collecting bottles, cans, metal, paper and clothes all raises funds and helps protect the environment. We can assist in tree planting and prevention of pollution and dumping of waste. Hunger: Volunteering at Foodbank packing food hampers assisting in school breakfast programs and helping welfare agencies with the needy in your community. Paediatric Cancer: A new challenge. We need to raise awareness of children suffering, by supporting doctors and research scientists in their search for cures. The new Genome sequencing technology that diagnosis the treatment of childhood cancer is an exciting project developed by Australians. Diabetes: It s been around for years, we all know lots of adults and children who have it but have we found a cure? Hopefully with funding and support through LCIF along with diet and lifestyle choices we can reduce the early onset of this disease. In March 1st 2018 will be the major international launch of the diabetes. Of course we all still need to support the measles campaign to fill our pledge to raise 5.5 million dollars. This is a preventable disease that can cause blindness and death. GST roles in our clubs need to identify local service needs and support all LCIF projects. By doing this we can support, encourage and expand good service. Together we can embrace our motto We Serve Jill Kimber District GST Coordinator 45 Years of Service Lion Allan Dowdell OAM and Lion Robin Conboy were recognised at Lions Great Train Robbery dinner meeting for 45 years continuous membership of the Lions Club of Mount Gambier. Allen and Robin were inducted exactly 45 years ago on the 24th October Lions Allan and Lion Robin have been loyal members who have contributed decades of excellent service. Congratulations Allan & Robin. Page 15
