AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC TERRITORY - The Age of Discovery ( ) [The Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) was led by Douglas Mawson, a geologist from Adelaide. Mawson had been with Shackleton's 1908 Expedition & was one of the first group to climb Mount Erebus, the highest point on the Antarctic continent. The AAE was essentially a scientific project that made major contributions in geology, meteorology, geo-magnetism & biology. It has been called "the first major scientific exploring venture by Australians beyond their shores". In addition, the extensive physical exploration & associated cartography laid the basis for Australia's later claim to what became the AAT. Mawson's epic editing of the 22 volumes of the AAE "Scientific Reports" was completed only in Mawson lead the British Australian & New Zealand Research Expedition (BANZARE) of which focussed on marine science & resulted in a further 13 volumes of reports] C A+ Lot Figurehead (London) PPC "The gallant Aurora/pushing through the ice floes" Wharton #NA-2, unused. In 1947, the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition(s) was founded. ANARE (pronounced an-ar-ay) embraces the activities in Antarctica of both government and non-government bodies and individuals, with a central focus on scientific research.
