4 Prestige Philately - Auction No 162 Page: 4 The Gallipoli Fiasco The Dardenelles Campaign was one of the most ill-conceived and poorly executed plans of the entire war. While troops from many countries - though very few from Britain - participated in the landings, Australian and New Zealand forces bore the brunt of the fighting and suffered the greatest casualties. The first landings occurred on 25/4/1915. The troops were withdrawn on 20/12/1915, after eight months of futility and great loss. Both countries commemorate - not celebrate - Anzac Day on 25th April each year. 949 C A/B Ex Lot 949 PPCs including Gallipoli map, real photo types of the landings (4), "Dug Outs at Anzac Cove", "Table Top Anzac" & "Turkish Guns Captured at Anzac", commemorative types for the Otago Battalion (3 from the set of 4, one used under cover), "Bravo Anzacs" (poem), "Hill 60 Zillebeke" (monument) & "Remember ANZAC/Ake Ake Kia Kaha" (used under cover), unused. (13) CPS A/B Ex Lot 950 PPCs with messages headed "Lemnos/ " or "Mudros/ " & British-type Field Service Post Card with skeleton 'ARMY POST OFFICE / X /SZ6' cds used at Mudros East; illustrated "tobacco card" with message headed "Gallipoli/Dec 3rd"; & cover with the enclosed letter headed "Anzac Cove/Turkey/ " in which the writer - who must have been insane - states "I have now been here for several weeks and it is a great place"! (6 items) 951 C B Ex Lot (June-July) crude postcards fashioned from pieces of cardboard, two identifiable as from tobacco boxes, one has received attention from the censor, all to New Zealand. [A similar item - the only NZ example we had then seen - sold for $776 at our auction of 2/10/2010] (4) 1,200

5 Prestige Philately - Auction No 162 Page: C B Lot (June-July) another example with message that states "I suppose you will think this is about the latest thing in postcards - they are all the rage here with us. If you were to come upon us now you would fancy you had discovered a race of cave dwellers. We are living in what is called Canterbury Gully in little holes in the sides thereof with a blanket stretched across the front...we have just come down for a rest after putting in a week in the trenches. The rest consists of making a road..." C A/A- Ex Lot 953 HOSPITAL SHIPS Real photo PPC & two PPC-size photos (one in peacetime) of the "Maheno" plus two modern PPCs of the wreck on Fraser Island (Qld); also Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty PPC of the "Marama". [The appalling casualties at Gallipoli inspired the NZ public to raise funds to equip the "Maheno" as a hospital ship. She departed Wellington on 11/7/1915, made straight to Gallipoli, and spent two months ferrying the wounded to Mudros & Malta] (4) C A Lot 955 HOSPITAL SHIPS PPC with double-framed 'NZ Expeditionary Forces/8OCT1915/---- HOSPITAL SHIP' d/s ('No 1' removed) in violet when en route to England. Ex Eric Gibbs. [The datestamp was altered because at the time there was no Hospital Ship No 2]

[The datestamp was again altered because the "Marama" was now in service] (3) C A Lot 957 HOSPITAL SHIPS 'H.S. MAHENO/17AU18/N.Z' cds nine per favor strikes (one on the view side) on Egyptian stamps on PPC. ["Marama", a larger vessel than "Maheno", departed Wellington 5/12/1915 for Egypt via Adelaide (arrived 16/12/1915), Colombo & Aden (arrived 4/1/1916). Because Gallipoli had been evacuated in late-december, "Marama" was used to ferry patients from Egypt & Salonica to Malta] (3)
