3 Prestige Philately - General Public Auction No 134 Page: 3 CINDERELLAS (continued) Lot ** C A1 Australia: 1919 Ross Smith vignette with full margins AAMC (Eustis) #27b, exceptional centring, minor all-over aging & ironed-out diagonal crease, unmounted, Cat $20,000 (2). Peter Holcombe Certificate (1993) states erroneously "Kingsford Smith Vignette". The "Vickers Vimy" flight from England to Australia was one of the greatest adventures in aviation. London's "Daily Mail" was so motivated by the prospect of inter-continental airmail that it offered a prize of 10,000 - a prince's ransom in for the first crew to achieve the feat. DOCUMENTS & EPHEMERA 38 Eustis at p16 states there can be a maximum of 86 mint examples (of which about 20 had the margins removed in anticipation of being affixed to the incoming mail from England). Some 25 are held by museums around the world and approximately 50 - with or without margins - are in private collections. In his opinion, "Mint copies of the stamp with selvedge all round are the greatest rarities in Australian philately."?c Australia: Small scrappy group of early letters from the NSW & Vic Lands Departments; small Havelock tobacco tin in distressed condition; and bundle of Mum's Baking Powder coupons for between 1 & 4 coupons. 7,500 Offer 39 C A/B Ex Lot 39 Australia: c.1900 three portrait studies by JW Lindt of Melbourne on his illustrated cards (109x166mm), one of Charles Blackett the State Government Analyst (with his obituary on the reverse), also four Lindt PPCs including two of his home "The Hermitage" at Narbethong. [Lindt, a German emigré, was one of Australia's pre-eminent photographers in the latter part of the 19th Century. He has somewhat unfairly been lambasted & lampooned for his staged aboriginal "studies"] (7 items) 40 L A Ex Lot 40 Australia: "Places in & around Adelaide" (5th Edition, 1923) & "Visitor's Guide to Perth & Suburbs" (1930) published by the respective State Government Tourist Bureaux, extensively illustrated, the latter with a fold-out panorama & large fold-out map. Remarkably fine. (2 items) 100

4 Prestige Philately - General Public Auction No 134 Page: 4 DOCUMENTS & EPHEMERA (continued) 41 L Australia: 1923 huge folio "City of Melbourne/Plans/Section 1" being a complete set of 25 maps (each 610x565mm) of the Central Business District for the "Detail [sic] Fire Survey", on stiff card. Each map covers all streets within a full city block with detail of every building including the owner/occupant or name of the building, major construction features, location of internal sprinklers etc. Subsequent changes are reflected by additional detailed pieces being affixed. The covers are well-worn but the maps are generally very fine and impressive. [This is a truly monumental work of great historical significance that gives a startling overview of what made Melbourne tick in the "Roaring Twenties". It could provide a platform for a doctoral thesis or the individual maps - especially if framed - could be stunning conversation pieces in Melbourne's corporate boardrooms or "gentlemen's clubs"] 42? A Australia: 1980s (?) Eureka Card Company 23k gold foil collector's card of motorsport legend Peter Brock "slabbed" in perspex & with small perspex stand, numbered on reverse '0117 of 3500' & with accompanying Certificate of Authenticity. [Brock's driving record included more pole positions & more wins than any other driver on the Australian Tour. His nine victories at Bathurst are the stuff of legend. He was killed, doing what he loved, racing, on 8/9/6] 43? A Australia: 1988 Trax Model Products 1/43rd-size FJ-Holden in Variety Club Redex "Bash" yellow livery, two of them from a limited edition of 1000 & both as-new, in their original boxes (that are a bit the worse for wear); also 1992 BP Bash souvenir keyring. (3 items) 44 Australia: 1990s Phone Cards collection of used Telstra cards (including HM Prison Service) to $20 and OneTel to $25. Strong thematic appeal including wildlife, sport, Aborgininal paintings, etc; also an unused Western Australia Inverted Swan ASDA phonecard pack. (100s) PICTURE POSTCARDS - The "Cartophile" Collection [The material in this section is from one of the most extensive postcard collections we have seen. It was assembled by a collector with a voracious appetite and deep pockets. However, it must be noted that quality wasn't his primary consideration and, unless noted otherwise, mixed condition - but generally from good to fine - should be expected. Postal history subjects feature, including postmarks, origin/destinations,and postage due. The collector died many years ago so most of this material has been off the market for a very long time] Offer 52 C A/B Ex Lot 52 ESPERANTO: scarce group to Australia including from Spain (3), Czechoslovakia (2), Norway, Russia (3) & China. 15 Prestige Philately - General Public Auction No 134 Page: 15 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - KGV - Single Watermark (continued) Lot **(?) A B1 Cooke Plates 4d ultramarine with "Temple" Flaw BW #112(U)d, well centred, faint bend that in no way detracts, apparently unmounted, Cat $7500 (mounted). Possibly the finest example in existence. [This is the First State of the flaw, with a dot of colour remaining in the centre of the flaw] Though issued in 1922, it is only recently that the exact location of the Temple Flaw has been established. Research by New South Wales collector Geoff Wotherspoon, confirmed by other highly regarded collectors, has resulted in this major flaw being plated as [1L40]. Geoff's studies have raised the recorded numbers to between 6 & 8 mint (of which two are perf 'OS') and approximately 40 used examples (again two being perf 'OS'). In terms of relative values, compare these figures with the Line through 'FOUR PENCE' on the 4d violet, of which 5 mint - Cat $35,000 - and 15 used - Cat $ are recorded. We expect demand for the Temple Flaw to increase now that it's position on the plate is known. This is exactly what happened to the 'CNE PENNY' variety when it was finally plated a couple of years ago. [Geoff Wotherspoon's research article appears in the latest (Dec 7) issue of the "Bulletin" of the Australian Commonwealth Collectors Club of New South Wales (ACCCofNSW). Membership of the group is strongly recommended to all who have an interest in specialised Australian subjects, especially Kangaroos and George V Heads. 39 Prestige Philately - General Public Auction No 134 Page: 39 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Military - World War I I 304 CPS Ex Lot extensive archive of mail to and from Fritz Guttenberg one of the "Dunera Boys", starting with a PPC of the ship and a letter headed "Richborough/11 August 1939" including a hand-drawn plan of that camp in Kent, then items from Austria (8), GB & USA (the last two with stamps removed by Censor) to Camps on the Isle of Man readdressed to Australia with various cachets, three Postal Cards & a cover from China to Hay Camp NSW again with the stamps removed, later stampless covers from China to Tatura - three with 'AV2' h/s of Hong Kong, further covers from GB & USA to Hay or Tatura including several with the stamps removed, also a couple of Australian covers to the Camps. Most with the enclosed letters, written in German. Mail from Guttenberg includes 18 letters in English from Hay (mostly) or Tatura to his family in Shanghai with stampless covers (3), postcards at 5d rate (2, one overpaid with 6d Kooka) & POW lettersheets sent stampless (9) or with 5d Ram x2 (4) again with various cachets including the very scarce boxed 'PERMISSION/GRANTED' h/s in violet. And that's just Volume One! Volume Two consists of Red Cross Message Forms from Slovakia & China (9, two with Australian censor's cachet re not replying by post on the same form) to Australia, and from Australia to China (15). Many of these have cachets of the Red Cross in Turkey which acted as a forwarding agent. Volume Three includes early mail from Guttenberg at British Camps at Richborough & Mooragh (Isle of Man), more letters from China mostly without their envelopes, a chilling 1944 letter from a former internee advising of the fate of his relatives in Europe ["...Kubi has been taken to a concentration camp...and was never been heard of since. Stella...has been caught by the Gestapo & taken to a concentration camp in Silesia..."], eight more Red Cross Message Forms, plus some post-war letters. Importantly there are also items from GB (5, including two airgraphs) & USA to "Pte F Guttenberg/8th Austn Emp Coy" at various locations, these proving his enlistment in the Australian Army, finally a 1960 Australian Letter Card to "Fred Gordon", our hero's new identity, the letter still beginning "Mein liebe Fritz". [In May & June 1940, the British rounded up 75,000 mostly Jewish refugees from Germany & Austria & interned them. Churchill suspected "Fifth Columnists" among them & wanted them out of Britain. Some 0 were sent to Australia aboard the "Dunera", a ship with a maximum capacity of only 0 including crew. Conditions were appalling & on arrival at Sydney the inspecting medical officer's report resulted in the officer in command being court martialled. The British were acutely embarassed and placed a 100 years embargo on the "Dunera" file! The Dunera Boys were released in late-1942 & hundreds were accepted into the British & Australian Armies. Many, including Fritz Guttenberg, served in the Eighth Australian Employment Company. After the war, many stayed in Australia & achieved prominence in academia, sciences, the arts and in other pursuits. One of the best known was athletics coach Franz Stampfl who was well known to Gary Watson during his time at the University of Melbourne] This collection, without doubt, is the most important social archive we have offered. While much of the correspondence is in German, we have no doubt that it can form the basis for an important academic research project. The philatelic content is also quite extraordinary, with many items that would sell for hundreds of dollars if offered individually. Prestige Philately is honoured to have been given the opportunity to offer this remarkable lot. (170+ items) 10,000

54 Prestige Philately - General Public Auction No 134 Page: 54 COMMERCIAL AIRMAILS OF THE WORLD TO The "Biggles" Collection [Long considered a poor cousin of souvenir airmail covers - with all their contrived schlockiness - commercial airmails have in recent years become increasingly more desirable. These are the true artefacts of the intrepid aviators who between them greatly reduced the time an article was in transit. These are the envelopes that carried real mail, often quite literally "on a wing and a prayer". The early rates reflected the high value placed on a speedy delivery option. Internvention of the global conflict of World War II sent those rates to sometimes dizzying heights, and the mail by often circuitous routes, if indeed a service continued to operate at all. The study of commercial airmail is one of the truly great fields of opportunity for the dedicated postal history enthusiast. There are problems still to be solved, rates still requiring unravelling, and routes yet to be understood. In spite of these attractions, this remains a field in which bargains abouns and in which even the rarities are relatively inexpensive. Offered in this fascinating section are many distinctive items including oppressive rates, unusual routes, little-known carriers & exotic destinations. A feature is the many jusqua'a items (covers carried only part way by air and usually identified by the airmail indicium being barred-out). Geographical distribution is very uneven, with a strong emphasis on African material. The collection, really more of an accumulation at this stage, was assembled with the unfulfilled intention of forming a competitive exhibit. Condition is generally good to fine but some faults should be expected. We highly commend this material to all of our clients] Ex Lot CPS AUSTRALIA: Mostly pre-wwii group with better destinations of Kenya at 2/3d rate, South Africa at 2/9d, Egypt at 1/6d + 1d late fee, Tanganyika at 2/3d (Jubilee 3d & 2/-), Sierra Leone (philatelic) & Sudan, also 1½d Postal Cards uprated to 9d to GB (very fine) & Palestine (poor) etc. (16) 300 Ex Lot C AUSTRALIA: Inwards taxed group comprising 1935 from GB paid 1/2d (a 5-colour Recess/Litho mixed franking!) & Postage Due 2d; 1936 from India with 2a & 3a6p and Postage Due 1d & 2d x5; 1938 USA 6c Envelope +25c Air, Postage Due 1d block of 9 on reverse; 1939 from France with 25c 1fr & 5fr and Postage Due ½d 3d & 4d; & one other badly defective item. (5) C B Lot 897 AUSTRALIA: 1934 (Aug 15) to Scotland "Per Air Mail via Karachi" with rare solo franking of Victoria Centenary Perf 10 1/- tied by Sydney cds, 'CULTS/ABERDEENSHIRE' arrival b/s, light horizontal crease affects the stamp. [Prior to -/12/1934, the rate was 6d per ½oz, in addition to the normal surface postage of 2d per ½-oz. While this item may be overpaid 4d, it is more likely that the surface component was overlooked] C A+ Lot 902 AUSTRALIA: 1937 to Italy at 1/9d rate with KGV 3d & Kangaroos 9d x2 tied by very fine 'STOCKINBINGAL/ =NSW=' cds, Bolzano arrival b/s.
