COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Kangaroos - First Watermark 1, Lot **/* A/A- ½d green with the Watermark Inverted Interpane Block of 10 (5x2) BW #1ac from the left-hand side of the Post Office sheet of 240 (four panes of 60) comprising five vertical pairs with wide gutter between & including the No Monogram position #1azd, quite well-centred for such an item, a few short perfs that hardly detract from this sensational item, horizontal fold in the central gutter, the first and last pairs very lightly mounted at the top only, otherwise unmounted except for one pair mounted between in the margin, Cat $10, A piece of major technical importance and a great rarity of the Kangaroo & Map Series. The ACSC states "Several intersheet pieces are recorded...including a block of 48 and a severed double-strip of 24 with the watermark inverted." Arthur Gray had three blocks of 4 and two blocks of 6 that comprised a reconstructed entire double-strip of 24. The two No Monogram position blocks of 6 sold for $US5462 & $US4887 ($A7586 and $A6788 at the time). This block is far superior to Mr Gray's corresponding left-hand block of 6 - "thinning in one gutter pair & sheet selvedge, small margin tear...reinforced separated vertical perforations". The quoted catalogue value of $10,000 is for five separated pairs. As a block, a significant premium must apply. Additionally this has the Inverted Watermark variety, the catalogue value for which is ten times that for a normal stamp. Finally, four of the pairs are unmounted. The estimate should thus be seen as being very conservative. 15,000

21 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 21 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Commemorative Covers/Datestamps Olympic Games 1956 was an important year in Melbourne. The Olympic Games came to town. This event accelerated the introduction of television, and caused Essendon Airport to be upgraded and renamed Melbourne Airport. I (Gary Watson) was one year old and living in Learmonth near Ballarat, where the Olympic rowing regatta was conducted on Lake Wendouree. No fewer than 52 pictorial datestamps were issued for the various Olympic Games venues. At some point in my long philatelic journey, it dawned on me that commemorative datestamps used on COMMERCIAL mail were of significant rarity. I decided to pursue these elusive items, but only those from Melbourne's Olympiad. Despite all the numerous hours I have spent trawlling through dealers' boxes, auction catalogues and so on, I have managed to acquire only 36 commercial covers and postcards, at the rate of about one per annum! I have retained three for another of my collections and, with a few pangs of regret, the balance are offered here. Datestamp references - eg APM are from "Australian Pictormarks" by Jan Eury & Colleen Woolley who state in their introduction: "In all periods, commercial or official covers are much scarcer than philatelic items. They should command high premiums but most collectors prefer philatelic covers." These ladies are absolutely right: for both rarity and appeal these generally unappreciated rarities should be worth a minimum $500 each. However, ever the realist, I'm prepared to accept whatever the market decides they are worth. Hopefully the thematic, sporting, and Olympics collectors - perhaps even postmark collectors! - will fight to the death for what is literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! 1114 CL A- A1 Lot 1114 DOMESTIC MAIL: '.../22NOV/1956/[Village Entrance, Olympic Rings & Flags]/OLYMPIC VILLAGE...' 32 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 32 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Military - World War II: Northern Territory This is the first comprehensive military collection related to a geographic area of Australia that we have ever offered. Monica Comrie from New Zealand has collected Northern Territory postal history for over 30 years. When she sold the major portion of her collection through Macray Watson Auctions, she decided to retain the World War II material for further development. The result is an 8-frame exhibit, something many might have thought was an impossible achievement. Even in the 1940s, the Territory was our equivalent of America's "Wild West". The white population in 1938 was only some 6000, in an area of 523,620 square miles!! During the war, many thousands of troops served in the Territory but this was a temporary explosion. In 1954 the population was still only 16, C A/B Ex Lot 1153 MILITARY POST OFFICES ESTABLISHED BY THE PMG'S DEPARTMENT: Exhibit pages from Darwin Mil PO No 1 with steel cds x2 with 'MIL PO No 1/DARWIN' or 'MIL PO/LARRAKEYAH' h/s on provisional registration labels, & superb rubber cds; No 2 with 'RELIEF/ 9 /SOUTH-AUST' cds on airmail cover (second day of use) & "tied" to registered cover; No 3 with 'RELIEF/ 14 /SOUTH-AUST' cds tied to registered cover, & an inwards 'Birthday Greetings' telegram form & companion envelope; No 4 oval d/s on registered cover; No 5 rubber cds on registered cover; condition a bit variable. Virtually all recorded steel datestamp allocations - including the very rare 'ARMY PO/0126' at Darwin - are represented by one or two mostly airmail commercial covers including official (6, two registered) and registered (19, a few with with provisional or overstamped labels) items. The condition is variable but the covers are generally fine to very fine and the datestamps are generally fine to superb. An exceptional lot that would take years to duplicate. (38 items) 600T Lot C A- AIR FORCE: Stampless American Red Cross cover endorsed "Stamps Unavailable" & "Air Mail - Active Service/WO Ewin RJ/Naha Airstrip Okinawa/via 8 TMO Darwin", to Melbourne with 'RAAF PO DARWIN/7NO46/NORTH-AUST' cds, opened-out. An enigmatic cover that raises more questions than it answers: Was the sender an Australian or British NCO? Why was he on Okinawa? Why was the cover endorsed OAS, more than a year after the war had ended? Why the via Darwin endorsement? Despite our research on Google, we can only speculate. Our suggestion is that the RAAF carried out a survey flight between Australia and Japan for Trans-Australian Airways (the addressee of the cover). Because the BCOF was active in the Occupation of Japan, members of the survey were entitled to OAS mail privileges. Most of the stamps and proofs in this section are noted as being "Ex Carrington". Basset Hull Vol II at pp states that a 9d denomination was requested in In fact, six sheets of a 9d value were printed on Wmk '2' paper but all were later destroyed. Basset Hull makes no mention of the 9d design & it may have been that shown here. However, it seems remarkable that the creation of a new die and plate should pass without mention. Authority was subsequently given to surcharge the sheets of the now redundant 10d, printed in brown, and Hutson mentions a pair of 9d surcharge essays in the Royal Collection. In 1876, De La Rue was requested to prepare a 1/- design, which is the same design as this 9d. The thick plottens! It is possible that the 9d proofs were prepared in Sydney. They are on the same thick stock used for colour trials of the 1897 Jubilee values that were produced entirely in the Colony. Basset Hull states those items were "die proofs" produced by a "photo-mechanical" process: presumably he means they were proofs derived from the die, rather than struck from the die. The thick paper suggests these proofs also derive from c However, the 9d proofs are not of a photographic nature. Carried per "Regalia", departed Sydney 15/8/1821. [Between 1819 & 1828, no postal markings were used at Sydney. Mail from early in this period is very scarce. Carried per "Minerva" via Calcutta, departed Sydney 4/10/1822. [The contents relate to Church politics & resolutions against false rumours & basically tell London to pull their collective heads in. The letter is full of interesting social commentary: "Our Missionaries never attempted to interfere with, or in any way impede, the privileges or duties of the Established [Anglican] Clergy, though we cannot give them the same credit for their conduct..."] This is a remarkably early India Letter from Australia. Carried per "Competitor", departed Sydney 4/2/1824 for England via the Cape of Good Hope. In 1817, Walter Lawry sailed from England as chaplain on the convict ship "Lady Castlereagh". He personally paid for the Methodist Church at Parramatta and in 1820, at Bathurst conducted the first Methodist service west of the Blue Mountains. In 1821, he was sent to Tonga for an unsuccessful mission. His Australian Dictionary of Biography entry states he was ordered to Hobart but instead returned to London. However, this letter proves that he first went to NSW: he states he returned from the Friendly Isles (Tonga) in -/11/1823, & seeks permission to return to England to answer charges against him: "I receive no other letters than those which contain rebukes...the breath of detraction and misrepresentation." [Brian Peace's extraordinary First Day Cover - the cds with only 'M' for the month, in red - sold for $17,250 at our auction of 27/7/2009. The cds wore very quickly: as early as April 1830 the outer frame was completely worn-away. Complete strikes, such as this very early usage, are of some rarity] George Erskine was a prominent Methodist preacher. He writes "We almost seem to be forgotten by our home Fathers...my deficiencies render me a most unfit person to act as Chairman...Revd Saml Marsden called on me...saying he had been unjustly charged with having inflicted illegal punishments when acting as Magistrate, that therefore he had written a Pamphlet in his own defence...i have seen his Statement & believe it correct...in reference to the Black Mission of this Colony it has been to us a source of much pain and vexation...i am inclined to say suspend it for a season..." In 1814, George Erskine was one of the first Methodist missionaries in Galle (Ceylon). He moved to Sydney in 1823 and took up land in the area later named Erskineville. The Anglican Marsden was one of the most prominent early settlers & pastoralists. He arrived in Sydney in 1793, as assistant to the Chaplain of NSW, and lived for many years at Parramatta where, as magistrate, he earned a reputation for extreme severity & the sobriquet "The Flogging Parson". Of the pamphlet referred to, no less a personage than Chief Justice Francis Forbes wrote that it was "a very inaccurate account of the proceedings". 4,000T

In 1829, he arrived in NSW as Commissioner for the Australian Agricultural Company. This semi-autonomous million acre fiefdom based around Port Stephens was established as a British "factory" for wool and crops. Over the objections of Sir Thomas Mitchell, Parry was responsible for exchanging those parts of the grant he deemed unsuitable for prime agricultural land on the Liverpool Plains. She came to grief off Cape Otway on her maiden voyage. No lives were lost & the mail was all recovered and landed at Melbourne 28/12/1855. Brian Peace recorded only four "Schomberg" covers. It was used for 3 weeks in Sep-Oct For the 4d it is only found completing sheets already partly perforated...such stamps are naturally of some rarity". An exceptionally rare item to a most unusual destination. Ex Ben Palmer, & the only cover to Malta listed in his Census. The Commissariat Frank is rated RRRRR by Carl Stieg & Max Watson, who state that only one lettersheet (of 1871) and "no envelopes, and no cut-outs, are known". This item is thus the earlier - by four years - of only two recorded examples of the rarest Victorian Frank Stamp (Apr 27) complete edition of "The Australian News" to England with Laureates 1d tied by '1' killer cancel, insignificant tears and minor creasing hardly detract from the fine appearance. 1, C B Lot (Sep 14) cover to San Francisco with Laureates 6d pair tied by light strikes of BN '622' of Bridgewater- on-loddon, at Melbourne 1/4d rate noted, 'SAN FRANCISCO' arrival of NOV15 on the face, 'T' h/s & superb 'US CHARGE/TO COLLECT 20 CENTS', Postage Due 10c pair affixed to the reverse & a second San Francisco cds 'NOV/15/PAID' applied, redirected within California with Washington 2c pair added for the forwarding fee, minor blemishes. [The rate was 8½d + 3d late fee] Colin Tabeart Vol 2 page 109 states that the "Iberia" departed Sydney on 2/3/1885, with the NSW Contingent for the Sudan. It's next port-of-call was Adelaide. The "Argus" advised of a one-off Supplementary Mail to Adelaide per "Victorian" to close at 1pm on 3/3/1885. For a late fee of 3d, letters would be accepted until 1.30pm: note the time-code 'T' in the cancel represents processing between 1pm & 2.30pm. Mail had to be endorsed "per Iberia". An exceptional interrupted transit origin/destination cover. Ex Ben Palmer. [Ben Palmer records no Victorian pre-upu cover to the DWI, and this is the only pre-1901 cover we have seen] The routing endorsement indicates carriage per the so-called trans-pacific "All Red Route", via Canada instead of the USA. The "Miowera" departed Sydney 19/9/1893: she was severely damaged when grounded at Honolulu on 2/10/1893. [The "Islander" was owned by the Christmas Island Phosphate Co & from the 1930s called about 3 times each year at Cocos with provisions and mail] 500T

105 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 105 COCOS ISLANDS POSTAL HISTORY Tin Can Mail (continued) 1440 C A Lot cover to Gibraltar(!) with Leigh-Parkin's endorsement on the flap & superb strike of his new boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s in violet, also endorsed "Per RMS Orion" at lower-left, Australian 1/6d applied for airmail & cancelled with Perth slogan. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $1840. [With lengthy letter in which Leigh-Parkin states "...I decided to make it 2 years in Cocos...I shall be here until Nov I hope to get all my letters off on the tin can mail...this is the first time a special cachet has been impressed...i am mainly responsible..."] 1,250T 1441 C B Lot cover to "The Postmaster/Cocos Keeling Islands" with GB 2½d tied by Bedford machine cancel, superb strikes on the reverse of circular 'ORION/Barrel' & boxed 'COCOS/5JAN51' d/s, minor blemishes & creasing. Both markings were absent from Kim Dwyer's collection. They are probably the two rarest Cocos markings. 750T 1442 C A- Lot commercial airmail cover to England with very fine strikes of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s & straight-line 'Per WAVE BARON' h/s both in violet, Ceylon 75c for airmail affixed & tied by Colombo cds of 22JA/51. This was the only Tin Can Mail per "Wave Baron". [ Kim Dwyer's similar cover sold for $2185] 1,250T

106 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 106 COCOS ISLANDS POSTAL HISTORY Tin Can Mail (continued) 1443 C A Lot Stanley Gibbons registered cover from London to ".../Cocos Islands/PO Box 146/ SINGAPORE" with Singapore transit b/s of 12SEP51, very fine strike of the 'COCOS Is/(" "/PER ("Islander")' oval cachet in violet on the reverse but unusually without the Cable & Wireless arrival cds. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $ T 1444 C A- Lot cover to the Purser of the "Orion" at Sydney with very fine strikes of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s & circular 'Per RMS ORION' h/s both in violet, 6d Kookaburra tied by Perth slogan cancel of 16APR/1951, Sydney arrival b/s & redirected to Melbourne. 400T 1445 C A Lot stampless cover to the "Purser, RMS Orion/Sydney" with 'ERL PARKIN/COCOS' cachet on the flap, very fine strikes of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s & circular 'Per RMS ORION/(" ")' h/s both in violet. Unusual. 250T 1446 C B Lot cover to the "Staff Commander/RMS Orion/Sydney" with Leigh-Parkin's endorsement on the flap, very fine strikes of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s & circular 'Per RMS ORION/(" ")' h/s both in violet, minor blemishes. [From the same mail as the previous cover, but someone has erroneously "enhanced" the handwritten date "52"] 250T

107 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 107 COCOS ISLANDS POSTAL HISTORY Tin Can Mail (continued) 1447 C (B) Lot cover with Orient Line imprint on the flap, to England with typed endorsement "Per SS Orontes ", very fine strikes of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s & the circular 'Per RMS ORION', Australian 2½d block of 4 affixed & tied by Perth slogan cancel of 23NOV/1951", a little soiled & repaired tears that affect the boxed cachet. [According to Kim Dwyer, the intended collection by "Orontes" did not occur because of poor weather & the mail was delayed until the next collection by "Orion" on 18/11/1951. But, see the next lot] 350T 1448 C A- Lot cover to England with woodcut 'ERL PARKIN/COCOS' h/s on the flap & very fine strike of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s in violet, '[crown]/orient LINE OF ROYAL MAIL STEAMERS/SS/ORONTES' cachet, ½d Roo & 3d Barton tied by Perth slogan cancel of 28SEP/ T 1449 C B Lot cover to England with very fine strikes of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s & circular 'Per RMS ORION' h/s both in violet, 2½d Scout pair tied by Perth slogan cancel of 23NOV/1951, minor spotting. 300T 1450 C A Lot philatelic cover to Melbourne with Australian ½d & 3½d tied by fine 'RAAF PO/29FE52/COCOS ISLAND' (leap year) cds, very fine strike of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS-KEELING IS' h/s in violet. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $552. [RAAF personnel usually sent their mail by air but occasional use was made of the tin can service. Such covers, while obviously philatelic, are very scarce] 500T

108 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 108 COCOS ISLANDS POSTAL HISTORY Tin Can Mail (continued) 1451 C B Lot (May 5) inwards cover from Ceylon to "Flight Officer Prune/co Post Office/RAAF/Cocos Islands" & endorsed "Via Tin Can Mail" with 'RAAF PO/5JE52/COCOS ISLAND' arrival b/s, returned to Colombo with a verse of doggerel added about Prune having departed Cocos, some toning/soiling. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $ T 1452 C B Lot cover endorsed on the flap "From/WHJowett/DCA/Cocos Island" to his wife in Tasmania with fine boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS KEELING IS' h/s & circular 'Per RMS ORION' h/s both in violet, Australian 1d & 5½d affixed for "internal" airmail & tied by Perth slogan cancel of 23NOV/1951 & also Hobart arrival cds, a little stained (possibly from the barrel leaking!?). Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $506. [From the last tin can mail out of Cocos] 500T 1453 C B Lot cover to England endorsed on the flap "EBHawkey/Direction Island//Cocos-Keeling" to England with an indistinct triple-oval '[? ]/3MAY1953/COCOS' d/s (inverted) & two good strikes of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS KEELING IS' h/s, 2/- Crocodile tied by Perth slogan of 8MAY/1953, a few blemishes. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $368. [Kim Dwyer stated this cover is dated 6 months after the Tin Can Mail service was terminated. The 5-day gap between the Cocos & Perth markings is consistent with seamail. However, the cover was probably flown a few days after the withdrawncachet was applied per favor] [Illustrated above Lot 1452] 300T

109 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 109 COCOS ISLANDS POSTAL HISTORY Malayan Postal Agency A Malayan Postal Agency was opened 2/9/1952 and closed 6/11/1955. During this period civilian mail could no longer be sent through the RAAF Post Office. Most mail in this period is overtly philatelic, with commercial covers being very scarce C B Lot commercial airmail cover to England with Singapore 10c pair & 50c tied by two strikes of the Malayan 'COCOS/ISLANDS' cds, minor blemishes. 200T 1455 C C Lot (Dec 31) commercial usage of local PPC (sign reading 'COCOS ISLAND/ALTITUDE 10 FEET') to Belgium - an unusual destination from Cocos - with message in French, Singapore 20c pair tied by 'COCOS/ISLAND' cds, faint strike of the rare boxed 'BY AIR/FROM/KEELING COCOS/ISLANDS' h/s in violet, some toning. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $437. [The earliest of the 5 recorded items with this cachet] 350T 1456 C C Lot Singapore KGVI Perf 17½x18 10c 20c 25c 35c & $1 each with per favor part-strike of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/ COCOS KEELING IS' h/s in violet, full unmounted o.g. BPA Certificate (1988) for the 20c 25c & $1. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $ T Lot C C 1953 Singapore KGVI Perf 17½x18 5c 10c 20c 25c 35c & $1 - the first 3 marginal with Plate Number - all tied to a plain cover by 3 strikes of the boxed 'TIN CAN MAIL/COCOS KEELING IS' h/s in violet, toning. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $ T

110 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 110 COCOS ISLANDS POSTAL HISTORY Malayan Postal Agency (continued) 1458 C A Lot commercial cover to Singapore with 10c for "internal" airmail & 20c for registration tied by cds of 30OCT54, blue/black registration label, 'NEWTON/SINGAPORE' arrival b/s of 12NOV54 suggesting it was actually carried by seamail. Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $ T 1459 PS A Lot (Nov 6) commercial usage to England of formular aerogramme with Singapore Sailing Craft 5c 10c & 20c tied by 'COCOS/ISLAND' cds. Interesting letter from a Department of Civil Aviation employee on the island to his family: "Letters by air mail from now have to be addressed VIA DARWIN and sea mail VIA PERTH WA..." but later "...all (mail) should be addressed COCOS ISLAND AUSTRALIA...the Australian govt take over on the 21st of this month then postage will be much cheaper..." Ex Kim Dwyer: acquired for $747. [Carried on the last mail from the Malayan agency. Items posted after this date were held until the transfer to Australian control] COCOS ISLANDS POSTAL HISTORY Australian External Territory The Australian post office opened on 23/11/1955. Australian stamps and postal stationery were used until 1963 when the first Cocos pictorials were issued. 600T 1460 C A- Lot commercial airmail usage to England of local PPC with 'BY AIR/FROM/KEELING COCOS/ISLANDS' & 1/- Lyrebird tied by Cocos #1 cds. Rare usage. [Kim Dwyer had two covers with light strikes. That of 4/9/ with Singapore stamp - and stated to be the latest of only five recorded examples sold for $575. This example is four years later, and the only example recorded in the Territory period] 500T

111 Prestige Philately - Auction No 179 Page: 111 NEW GUINEA - Australian Stamps Used in New Guinea 1507 C B Lot (Dec) commercial cover to Sydney with 'Hamburgische Südsee-Aktiengesellschaft/Hauptfilie Rabaul' imprint at top and typed "Per SS Morinda", correctly franked with Kangaroos perf 'OS' ½d (fault at lower-left) & 2d paying the civilian rate & cancelled on arrival with 'DELIVERY ROOM/15DE14 B/GPO/SYDNEY' cds, Sydney b/s of the same date in red, horizontal fold. Ex Tim Rybak: acquired for $1725 at our auction of 26/4/2008. Mail posted aboard ship was often uncancelled until arrival at the first major port. Such mail was also usually not censored. Probably the pre-eminent commercial airmail cover from New Guinea. [The trans-pacific "Clipper" rate was 3/11d per ½oz x2 = 7/10d + 3d registration] 4,000T

Ex Ray Kelly, Ian Borrie, Jerry Blair (private sale for $3500 in 2001) & Peter Troy. [The vignette colour was described by Croaker (who hadn't seen the actual items) as "blue-grey" & this statement has been repeated elsewhere. "Brown-grey" or "stone" would be a better descriptor] 4,000T
