7 Chair s Reprt 2013 brught a fresh image t RDA Barssa in a mve t new premises, the frmer Tanunda Institute. Built in 1877 as a meeting place fr the cmmunity it is a fitting lcatin fr RDA Barssa and its rle f cnnecting pprtunity, capacity and resurces. I thank the building wners fr making the premises available t us. Anther change fr RDA Barssa this year has been the intrductin f Bard wrkshps in alternate mnths t Bard Meetings. This was an initiative f bard members wh felt they wuld like t have the pprtunity t explre in depth sme f the critical issues and pprtunities facing the regin. Water Resurces and Reginal Pririties were the subject f tw f the wrkshps during the year. Lking frward Hrticulture will be in the next year s prgramme. With a strng fcus n lcal issues in a glbal cntext, the need and demand fr supprt and services by RDA staff has been enrmus. With the incredible pace f change in business and trade, the impact f external factrs n business and industry is requiring a respnse that many are unable t address r actin alne. Accrdingly, RDA Barssa has embraced the interest in clusters and clustering f business fr mutual supprt and advantage. Strategic appraches t clustering will als identify smart specialisatins within the regin as a call t glbal markets and t attract further expertise and investment. We have hsted a number f glbal experts t wrk with industry sectrs in particular disability & aged care and fd wine turism. Infrastructure is ever the driver f investment and grwth and imprtant infrastructure prjects in the past year include water reuse systems. The Greater Gawler Strmwater prject, a partnership between the fur cuncils in the regin, received $10.7 millin frm the Australian Gvernment twards the $20 millin first stage f the scheme. RDA has wrked with Cuncils and the Wakefield Grup n the mdel and partnerships fr delivery f the scheme. The Nrthern Adelaide Irrigatin Scheme is a crnerstne prject still seeking supprt funding. It will pen up the mst exciting new pprtunity fr the regin in facilitating grwth and expansin f the Nrthern Adelaide Plains fd bwl int the District Cuncil f Mallala adjacent t Tw Wells. This grwth is a pririty prject fr RDA Barssa. I wuld like t cngratulate the regin s wine industry and industry peak bdy Barssa Grape & Wine n the enrmus steps it has taken in glbal recgnitin culminating in publicatin f research identifying the Barssa as the wrld s fifth mst recgnised wine regin fr wine drinkers. 10 CEO Reprt Change is the big challenge that must be apprached as the big pprtunity. Creative thinking and respnsive actin is an advantage. Ideas, cllabrative innvatin, can all be generated by creating the right cnditins. Creating the right cnditins fr investment and innvatin is the ultimate gal f RDA Barssa activity. We have plans, gals and targets, but must remain flexible enugh in ur delivery t seize pprtunity as it arises. We must cultivate perspectives that identify pprtunity and the energy t encurage industry and cmmunity t actin it. We have a great team and I particularly acknwledge and thank valued team members Barbara Lightburn and Ashleigh Fx wh have mved nt new and equally exciting pprtunities. Reginal Develpment Australia Barssa (RDAB) is a partnership between the Australian Gvernment, Suth Australian Gvernment and lcal gvernment (Twn f Gawler, District Cuncil f Mallala, The Barssa Cuncil and Light Reginal Cuncil) t develp and strengthen the Barssa reginal cmmunity. It has a pivtal rle in ensuring the lng-term sustainability f the regin, wrking with all sectrs f the cmmunity, including peple frm a variety f demgraphics and cultural backgrunds. RDAB recgnises that the ecnmic, scial, cultural and envirnmental issues affecting cmmunities are interdependent in cntributing t Ecnmic Grwth. Accrdingly RDA Barssa wrks twards: Reginal business grwth and ecnmic develpment: the creatin f new jbs, skills develpment and business and infrastructure investment; Envirnmental resilience, sustainability and the management f ur resurce base (including the impact f drught and climate change); Cultural underpinnings f ur cmmunity, creativity and intergeneratinal leadership; and Scial inclusin strategies, which will cnnect and supprt all members f the cmmunity. 14 Bard Prfiles Ian O Lan - Chairman Ian is a self emplyed Livestck Bisecurity Auditr. He has been a primary prducer in the Mallala area fr ver 30 years. He is an active member f a number f Agribusiness and Cmmunity rganisatins. Ian has been the Chair f Reginal Develpment Barssa fr 4 years, past Chair f Reginal Develpment SA and Yrke Reginal Develpment Bard and past member f the SA Reginal Cmmunity Cnsultative Cuncil. In 1997, Ian was awarded an Order f Australia medal fr services t the cmmunity and lcal gvernment, and in 2008, wn a natinal leadership award frm Ecnmic Develpment Australia. He is als a Justice f the Peace. Alex Zimmermann Deputy Chairman Alex is a member f the Suth Australian Plice Frce and is the Lcal Service Area Cmmander fr the Barssa regin. He is the Chairman f the Plice Credit Unin Bard, PCU Financial Planning and als Wrkskil (an emplyment services prvider). As well, he is the Deputy Chairman f the Federatin f Plice Mutuals. He has successfully cmpleted the SA Gvernr s Leadership Fundatin prgram cnducted by the Leaders Institute f SA, which has prvided him with a strategic verview f the issues facing the Suth Australian and brader Australian cmmunity int the future. Lynette grew up in the district and has been invlved with cmmunity and sprting grups fr the ver 30 years, primarily in a vluntary capacity. A fundatin and life member f the Tw Wells Sftball and Hckey Clubs, past president f the Tw Wells Tennis Club, she is a current cmmittee member f the Tw Wells Ftball and Netball Sprting Club. 17 Rlf Binder Rlf Binder is an icnic name frm the Barssa Valley, knwn amngst true wine cllectrs and cnnisseurs as a prducer f rich Shiraz f cult status. With his sister Christa, Rlf has built up Rlf Binder Wines thrugh cnsistently high standards and uncmprmising wine quality. Rlf is a keen supprter f the Arts having hused a number f exhibitins, SALA events and live music events including a series f recrded cncerts fr ABC Classic FM at the winery. Rlf is a strng believer in place and peple, and in the value f the Barssa regin and its future generatins. Chris McCann Chris McCann mved t the Barssa in 1989 and has wrked fr TAFE SA Reginal as a lecturer in the Cmmunity Services and Health prgram, Reginal Manager and nw as Directr f Educatinal Prgrams, with a rle that cvers all f reginal Suth Australia. Anne maintains active dialgue with the three levels f gvernment and reginal industry. Her pririties are infrastructure and a diversified ecnmic base. Her gals are fr sustainable ecnmic grwth in a thinking and innvative regin. Barbara Lightburn (until June 2013) Manager, Business Investment and Jb Creatin Barbara Lightburn cmmenced with the bard in July With expertise in Small Business, Educatin and Organisatinal Behaviur she had a wealth f infrmatin n the issues facing businesses in tday s envirnment. When his is nt ut and abut prmting the regin, he divided his time between the RDA Office and the Turism Barssa Office. Nathan stepped int the turism rle after almst 10 years as a jurnalist and editr. He grew up in the Barssa and is nw bringing up a family f his wn here. He lves telling stries and getting peple enthused abut spending time in the Barssa. Cathy Wills (cmmenced February 2013) Manager, Reginal Turism Cathy Wills cmmenced as Reginal Turism Manager after recently returning hme t the Barssa. She has extensive prject management experience in the cmmunity, cultural and events sectrs, and is lking frward t cntributing these skills t supprt Turism develpment within the Barssa. Cathy has wrked acrss a diverse range f prjects, including festivals & events, gurmet fd events and research & prfessinal writing prjects. Meagan Stapletn (cmmenced March 2013) Administratin Trainee Meagan is underging a traineeship with RDA Barssa whereby upn cmpletin she will receive a Certificate IV in Business Administratin. This will build n her knwledge and experience frm the Certificate III in Business she received in 2012 and prepare her fr her desired future in Administratin.
