1 DECEMBER 2011 Happenings December Board Meeting Wednesday, 6:30 December 7 Commodore s Holiday Party Wednesday, 6:00 December 21 HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Commodore Jerry Hancock Vice Commodore Diana Hancock Rear Commodore Duane Bordvick Secretary Gayl Beller Treasurer Judy Welker Trustees Dave Welker Bill White Chaplain Bob Maxson Historian Patty Maxson July Fourth Float Chair(s) Bill White and Judy Welker Reciprocal Chair Dave Welker Newsline Editor Shanley Lett COMMODORE S CORNER This is my last Commodore s Corner. I have really enjoyed my tenure, but will soon be handing over the talking feather to Vice Commodore Diana Hancock as she steps into the leadership role of our club. The entire process of going through the chairs has been fun and rewarding. I have learned a lot about our club, met and worked with wonderful people and watched our club grow. Next year, as Past Commodore, I will continue working on the Board with this great team of active and energetic people. When I was introduced as Rear Commodore three years ago, I wore a colorful red hot chili pepper apron and told the group, I have to be colorful because the previous Rear Commodore David Welker, is the life of the party; and following in his footsteps will be a challenge. At first, it appeared as though I had stepped out on the skinny branches of life. I was aware the Rear Commodore is in charge of Opening Day and scheduling cruising events on the water. The process seemed daunting. Of course, David, club members and the Board helped me with ideas and the cruises were accomplished smoothly. I have also been fortunate in accomplishing LIYC tasks by enlisting the aid of my wife Diana. As this year s Vice Commodore, she has been responsible for arranging meals and programs. However, any problems with video equipment has been solely my responsibility. During both tenures, we have met many enjoyable people with the same interests. As Membership Chair Gayl Beller says, Our friendly and outgoing members have attracted 15 new friendly and outgoing members. Flying the LIYC burgee is another excellent way to meet people. Allen and Frankie Clark recently purchased an LIYC burgee for their airplane ride to Costa Rica. They purchased one-way tickets because they are not sure which month they will return. However, they plan on meeting new friends and exchanging their burgee for another club s burgee that will grace our club house wall in the Spring. Continued on page 3
2 Commodore s holiday party Wednesday, December 21, :00 pm The Bay Café See blue cover sheet for details COMMODORE S CORNER, continued from cover page New incoming Board members are Rear Commodore Jim Ghinazzi and Secretary Julie Duncan. They have already attended November s Board meeting and are up to speed and ready for their tasks. I want to thank Barbara Carver and Lane Langford for being hosts at the November general member ship meeting. They are an example of club members who step forward after a telephone call asking for help. On short notice, they decorated, greeted arrivals, and made sure everything was clean after dinner. Of course, I am looking forward to the 2011 Commodore s Holiday Party. The venue, food and decorations will be special. Our hosts, Jay and Jane Simonson and Richard and Christy Miklich have been working with Rear Commodore Duane Bordvick and Video Production Producer Extraordinaire Audrey Bordvick to entertain us with local music and funny pictures. Even though the plans are secret, I am aware my twin brother sent photos from California. As only he would say in his articulate way, You are in trouble, Captain Jerry. Thank you for the opportunity to be Commodore. I ll see you on the water. Jerry
3 NOVEMBER S GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING was well attended and members unanimously approved the proposed slate of officers for Special Thanks to Barbara Carver and Lane Langford for hosting and providing fun table decorations for Nov. Sam and Gayl Beller with Barbara Carver and Lane Langford Ivan Brown had the winning 50/50 Raffle ticket sold (of course) by Vice Commodore Diana Hancock. HAPPY HOLIDAYS Duane and Lori Taylor and Rod Duncan WITH NEW MEMBER APPLICATION AND INITIATION FEE CHECK IN HAND, Adrian and Carolyn Cameron were introduced. Carolyn has done a lot of cruising (but only with about 3000 other crews members at a time.) Adrian has done a bit more sailing, and belonged to the Darwin Yacht Club in Australia. He was lucky enough to be there when Australia launched another challenge for the America s Cup (and won!) He crewed on his only blue water race from Darwin to Ambon, capital of the Moluccas, an Indonesian territory. He also has a copy of Encyclopedia of Nautical Knowledge and 3 books on how to sail, from which (by his own estimation) he has learned very little.
