We are in the thick of an active season, with numerous activities and opportunities and many wonderful people to thank. We started June with the Flat Point Clam Fest hosted by Ross and Anne Worley in their usual smooth style that makes everything look easy. The Flat Point picnic grounds were spotless. A campfire was prepared in case the weather turned on us; and the shelter, tables with umbrellas and clam pot burners were ready to go. During the event, we had beautiful weather and a great potluck provided by club members while Washington State ferries chugged past during lunch. Brian Duncan surprised us by bringing five gallons of his homemade American Amber Ale. And, with Judy Welker s labeling help, he named the brew Commodore s Reserve and put my photo on the keg. Gary Zerbsts s second and shortest (6 miles) Slo-Mo cruise to Blind Bay (Shaw Island) on June was another great success. Seven boat owners participated during the weekend, with Tom and Susan Patty arriving by Washington State Ferry. Club members participated in Geo Caching, touring an artistic and whimsical Shaw Island home, and dining on Sam and Gayl Beller s Kinship. It was also reported that Tom Patty went up Gary Zerbst s sailboat mast for repair work. The next Slo-Mo cruise is to Matia Island, July But, Gary is looking for a Matia Island host for the cruise. He and Linda are unable to attend because of a previous engagement that will take them north with the Windseekers from Olympia, Washington. Gary s is zeman@rockisland.com. The June Commodore s Cruise to Victoria, B.C. was a delight. We had twelve boats in front of the Empress Hotel, a finger food buffet on the dock, a restaurant dinner at Milestone s for 28 people, shopping, pub hopping, carrot cake and tea. Oh my! Prospective LIYC members Richard and Christy Miklich arrived on Shanti, their 35 sailboat, Rod Duncan and Karen Bistrin sailed on the big green Washington State Ferry and Steve and Andrea Clark (also prospective members) arrived in their 55 Fleming. It was Steve s birthday and he invited all the cruise participants on board for birthday cake. Continued on page 3

Continued from Cover Page Meanwhile, the Fourth of July is fast upon us and parade float coordinator Judy Welker is looking for participants to help with the decorating, walking/riding being in the moving diorama float. Join the fun! Be in the parade and see Lopez Island s Fourth of July from a different angle. Also on the immediate horizon is the July 9th Fisherman Bay Raft-Up. Staff Commodore Dave Welker plans on tying a section of a floating dock to a mooring buoy in front of his house. Boats will raft to the dock-on-the-buoy-in-the-bay. Bring your folding chair, umbrella and picnic table. This will be good! As we hit the midpoint of our cruising season, I especially want to thank Rear Commodore Duane Bordvick for his hard work and coordination. In the cold weather of winter, before Opening Day, Duane was lining up cruising information. Those efforts are now filling the sails of all our activities. He made beautiful cruising posters with information about each of the sites, signed up cruising hosts, and coordinated dates with old school (regular) cruisers as well as with Gary Zerbst and his Slo-Mo opportunities for closer to home adventures. Duane enlisted additional clam chowder chefs for the Clam Fest, suggested Victoria for the Commodore s Cruise, and now is working on the July 9th Raft-Up and July cruise to Port Ludlow Marina and Resort. This may be the farthest we have thrown our club cruising net in many years. We are participating in nine cruises and, after heading 43 miles south, we will return home and start our long North Cruise. By the way, I m having a great time! I hope you are, too. Jerry NEW LOPEZ ISLAND YACHT CLUB MEMBER APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED Philip and Bonnie Henault (below left) divide their time between Lopez Island and Lincoln, Montana. They own a 28 Harbercraft Kingfisher and are looking forward to fishing, crabbing and exploring. Ted and Susan Sanchez (below right) are long time residents of Lopez and former LIYC members. Ted and Susan have been sailing and racing for 45 years. They recently purchased a 29 Ranger (yet to be named.) the Lopez Island Fire Department and Fire Chief. Ted is retired (but busy) and Susan works for
FLAT POINT S ANNUAL CLAM FEST was another rousing success, thanks to hosts Ross and Anne Worley, whose set up and organization made everything seem easy; and to great food, great weather, wonderful chowder chefs, and Brian Duncan s surprise brew. < Doug and Barbara Allan Commodore Jerry and are also Flat Pointers. Lori Taylor O ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF MAY SLO-MO CRUISE TO PROVOST HARBOR was the SPAM carving contest masterminded by Gary and Linda Zerbst. Dick Bangsund (at left) begins his masterpiece. Chris Bangsund and Linda Zerbst (bottom left) show off their entry. (The winner of the carving contest was Gayl Beller, who has shamelessly admitted to bribing the judges. Per Gary, everyone else came in second.) (Below) Down time on the docks: Joe Golberg, Dave Welker, Sam and Gayl Beller, Bill Pugerude, Dick Bangsund and Gary Zerbst.
2011 s COMMODORE S CRUISE TO VICTORIA included spectacular moorage in front of the Empress Hotel and High Tea. < Bob Hall and Doug Cram in front of the Empress Hotel. >> Commodore Jerry Hancock and Vice Commodore Diana Hancock. Judy Welker and Lisa Cram (below left). And (below) Joanne Bryant, Jane Simonson and Christy Miklich pouring??? Does that look like tea? << The boys had their own tea party : Dave Welker, Sam Beller, guest Steve Clark from Sidney, Russ Johnson, Doug Cram, Duane Bordvick, Rod Duncan, Bob Hall and Jim Ghinazzi.
ALASKAN ADVENTURE FOR LIYC S THORNTONS WHY MEN SHOULDN T WRITE ADVICE COLUMNS Dear Bob, I hope you can help me. While parked at the dock on last weekend s yacht club cruise, I told my husband I was running over to the marina store in our motorized dinghy. The motor stalled, I had to row to the closest shore and walk back to the boat. When I got there, I couldn t believe my eyes. My husband was in our v-berth with the daughter of the marina owner. LIYC members Joe and Judy Thornton left May 14 for a summer long cruise to Alaska (and back). This picture was taken before departing from Fisherman Bay. So far, they report, the voyage has been challenging including Grizzly bears and this 100 floating ice berg in Tracy Arm Cove. I am 32, my husband is 34 and the owner s daughter is 19. We have been married for 10 years. He won t go to counseling, and I m afraid I am a wreck and need advice urgently. Can you please help? Dear Sheila, Sincerely, Sheila An outboard stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be the fuel pump itself, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors. I hope this helps. Bob THANK YOU! DID YOU FORGET THIS KNIFE? at the Flat Point Clam Fest? If so, contact Jerry Hancock at or jerryhancock@rockisland.com. Duane Bordvick, Judy Welker, Linda Zerbst, Jerry Hancock, Gayl Beller and all of you who took such great pictures of the June events while the Newsline Staff was off loafing.
