Report by the Chair of the Yorkshire & Humberside CIH Region Annual Meeting June 2012 This year we have worked hard to ensure that our activity plan is structured against key objectives of the region. Our 4 key areas of activity are Membership, Events, Policy and Education. We believe that these areas support the regional members and encourage growth in membership. By promoting membership through our events seminars and conference we hope to encourage new members. In addition we are keen to encourage student involvement both at branch level and sponsorship at events including the CIH conference in Manchester and we are linking the work of membership through our education sub group. Policy debate is a standing item at all our committees with key policy themes reflected in the range of seminars and at our regional conference in May. We are in the process of updating our manifesto to reflect our work and priorities. We continue to enthusiastically run a programme of events throughout the year. May 2012 saw our annual conference address the new landscape with themes around localism and welfare reform looking at what this means to us. This is supported by a series of seminars to support topical debate including the ageing population and challenges for society that affects how we deliver housing and support. Member feedback from seminars provides us with information on topics that they would like to see at seminars and we hope that we are satisfying our members by providing vital practitioner support in this way. We have strengthened feedback to members by commissioning work to provide post event briefings so that those who are unable to attend can capture the debate in a succinct way. The regional committee is working to put in place the new governance arrangements for the transition to regional boards. This will be a challenge for the Yorkshire and Humber region as our current committee membership is thriving. However we will be sad to see long standing members stand down to make way for new members. We are confident they will bring to the region a wealth of experience and knowledge to assist us in continuing to operate a successful committee. Our thanks go out to those standing down with particular acknowledgement to Ian Richardson, John Shepherd and Amanda Garrard for their long standing commitment to our work which has brought about over a decade of commitment to the work of the regional committee and housing. We wish them all the very best. I stand down as chair too so I would like to thank my colleagues for supporting me over the past 12 months and wish our incoming Chair Stephen good luck in his new role. Jayne Hellowell Chair of the CIH Yorkshire and Humber Region June

Report of the Treasurer to the Yorkshire & Humberside CIH Region Annual Meeting June 2012 The outturn for 2011 is reported at 9,131 against a total budget of 20,409. The total budget was made up of a budget allocation of 16,141 plus a carry forward of 4,268 from the previous year. One of the main strands of the Region s activities is the seminar programme which has continued to be well received by members and guests. These were augmented by a very successful AGM event in June which was extremely well attended. These activities accounted for the biggest element of expenditure during the year. Only a certain proportion of unallocated monies can be carried forward from one year to the next. A figure of 4,035 from the overall surplus for 2011 has been carried forward into The budget allocation and associated Regional Activity Plan for 2012 has been set at 14,541, thereby bringing the total available for branch expenditure in 2012 to 18,576. Helen Wordsworth Regional Treasurer June

Yorkshire and Humberside Policy Officer s Report Annual Meeting 2012 Policy work in the last year has focussed on engaging the Regional Committee in discussions on policy topics relevant to the region. These have included: - Promoting a single housing voice for the region - The impact of the Localism Bill - How housing organisations around the region are preparing for Welfare Reform - Rural housing issues (with a view to further activity later in the year as part of Rural Housing Week) The committee is currently considering a project to commission a piece of good practice research regarding effective preparation for the impacts of Welfare Reform around the region. Other key discussion items at Committee have been the CIH Governance changes, and feedback from the CIH Learning and Development Review As Policy Officer I also represented the Region at one of the last two Council meetings prior to the introduction of the new CIH Board of Governance. The Policy Group was represented at the Regional Policy Officers meeting, and we have continued to engage with the CIH Policy team on an on going basis. We are grateful for their continued support over the last 12 months In the coming year, as well as continuing with the policy discussions and programmed work we will be considering how we can develop the operation of the Policy Group within the context of the new Governance structure. We would welcome interest from members would like to contribute to regional CIH policy activity. Martyn Broadest Policy Officer, Yorkshire and Humberside 7

Chartered Institute of Housing Yorkshire & Humberside Annual General Meeting 2012: Membership Officer s Report Membership Benefits The CIH strives to offer its members the best possible benefits and services. Some of the membership benefits include: Free weekly copy of Inside Housing and bi-monthly Housing Practice magazine CIH News & Views e-newsletter Practice briefs (looking at detailed policy and legal backgrounds of each topic) Member alerts (sent as hot topics as a result of government or legislative change) Practice online (comprehensive online housing manual to help your organisation s policies and procedures) Regional events, seminars and conferences Career mentoring and access to careers related workshops and webinars Access to the job shadowing scheme, careers information sheets and the careers and employment helpline Discounts on CIH products, services and training An extensive list of all member benefits can be seen online at Membership Levels At the end of 2011/12 Yorkshire and Humberside had a total of 1,491 members. This equates to 7% of all CIH membership and makes Y&H the 6 th largest of the 10 regional branches in England. Compared to 2010/11 Y&H saw a significant decrease of 1,046 members, the vast majority arising from the end of a formal strategic partnership with a regional housing provider. The distribution seen across the two membership levels at the end of March 2011 was 64% (952) CIH Members and 36% (539) CIH Chartered Members. Membership Demographic By Gender & Ethnicity The CIH Yorkshire and Humberside membership profile by gender was 60% Female and 40% Male. The profile by ethnicity was 90% White British, 4.4% Black, 3.1% Asian, 1.2% Mixed Race, 1% Other. This exceeded the target for Y&H BME members. Membership Activities During 2011/12 Membership activities have increased during 2011/12. There has been greater emphasis upon promoting membership at regional events and conferences, greater promotion of tenant membership, and the creation of a student representative role on the committee. Discussing membership issues across different regions has also been undertaken to share knowledge and identify best practice, and the new Member Get Member campaign (where new members get 3 months membership free) has been launched. Work continues to trial a regionally-focussed online social media platform for CIH Y&H Members, and this will hopefully be finalised in 2012/13. Simon Williams, CIH Yorkshire and Humberside Membership Officer, June

Chartered Institute of Housing Yorkshire & Humberside Education and Training Officer s Report Annual Meeting 2012 The CIH as a professional body continues to support personal and professional development. The Yorkshire and Humberside Committee continues to actively promote education and training opportunities across the region and has attained the following achievements in the past year: In 2011, 46 people from the region successfully became Chartered Members. They achieved this by various routes, either by completing a recognised academic programme, the Direct Final programme or the APEX Express route. A student from Leeds Metropolitan University was jointly awarded the CIH National Student Prize in November 2011 for her academic achievements and was invited to the CIH Presidential Dinner in February 2012 to receive her award. There are currently 4 accredited centres delivering various CIH housing qualifications at Levels 2-4 in the region: Dutton Fisher & Associates Leeds College of Building The Centre for Partnership (Bradford) Wakefield and District Housing. There are also 2 universities delivering courses leading to CIH Chartered Membership: Leeds Metropolitan University and Sheffield Hallam University. To date in 2012, 8 people have achieved Chartered Membership. The Yorkshire and Humberside Committee has worked closely with the CIH, local universities and providers to improve the services that the CIH offers to students as well as addressing the viability of maintaining the provision of professional housing qualifications in the region. The committee continues to promote the benefits of CIH membership by attending various forums and events. I would like to thank all members of the Committee who have contributed suggestions for how work could develop in this area and the team at Coventry, for all their enthusiasm and support throughout the year.
