1 Discover Devon & Cornwall Homewood Museum Study Tour May Dear Friends, Ancient, mysterious, picturesque. Devon and Cornwall offer a treasure trove of fascinating sights. England s southwestern coast is in the midst of a quietly sophisticated transformation yet retains much of its rural charm as an historic center of fishing and agriculture. The countryside, wild as it is, has long been a magnet for artists and the mild climate has nurtured some of the world s most arresting gardens. Castles, secluded gardens, spectacular coastlines, historic architecture the best of Devon and Cornwall will be the subject of Homewood Museum s 2014 biennial study tour (May 15 23, 2014). As supporters of the Johns Hopkins University Museums, we are offering you the opportunity to join us on this adventure. The trip price is $5950 based on eighteen travelers, of which $350 may be considered a tax-deductible charitable contribution to Homewood Museum. As you ll read in the following itinerary, the trip includes luxury accommodations, land and ferry transportation, visits to private estates, and fine dining. Please complete the enclosed Reservation Form and return it with your deposit of $1000 per person ($850 is refundable up until December 15, 2013). Full payment for the trip is required by March 1, 2014, after which time deposits cannot be refunded. This trip has already generated significant interest and the number of travelers is limited. Reservations will be recorded in the order the completed form and deposit are received. All schedules mentioned in this itinerary are contracted for at this time but are subject to change if necessary. We ll explore the many horticultural treasures here, including several very different, charming gardens. Lunch is at Quenington Old Rectory, the home of art collectors Lucy and David Abel Smith, whose idyllic fiveacre garden estate features a tranquil millrace and works of contemporary sculpture. Continuing to the Devon village of gittisham, we ll check-in to Combe House, a luxury country house hotel with stunning views across Dartmoor. You ll have time at your leisure before our welcome dinner. Friday, May 16 Breakfast & Dinner Begin the day in exeter with a visit to Killerton, a 6,400-acre estate with landscaped gardens by John Veitch ( ). We ll tour the Georgian country house that was built for Sir Thomas Dyke Acland by John Johnson ( ), and see the museum s spectacular historic costume collection. Continue to exmouth and the 18th-century marvel A la Ronde, a 16-sided house built for the Parminter cousins following their Grand Tour of Europe, with fascinating interior decoration and eclectic collections. Lunch is at your leisure before a visit to Cadhay House and Gardens, one of the most interesting Tudor manor houses in Devon. Owner and furniture-maker Rupert Thistlethwayte will escort us through the house, which he has restored to its former glory since inheriting the estate in Return to the hotel and dine locally in gittisham. Enjoy luxurious accommodations at idyllic countryhouse hotels. Journey down the Devon and Cornish coastlines and experience exclusive, specially arranged private visits and guided tours. 3 Saturday, May 17 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Begin the day in tiverton at Knightshayes Court, a rare survival of the work of William Burges ( ). This extraordinary gothic delight boasts rich Victorian interiors and one of the finest gardens in Devon, with formal terraces, unique topiary, and an outstanding plant collection. Continuing to cheriton bishop we ll lunch at a classic Devon thatched pub before touring the dramaticallysited Castle Drogo, with commanding views of Dartmoor and the Teign Gorge. England s so-called last castle, this granite fortress is one of the most remarkable works by Edwin Lutyens ( ), who also designed the Arts and Crafts style garden with plantings by Gertrude Jekyll ( ). Dinner is at Combe House. Sunday, May 18 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Spend the morning in modbury as the guests of Lucy and Sebastian Fenwick, who will give us a tour of the walled gardens at their home, Shilstone. Anne and Anthony Mildmay-White will host us for lunch at Mothecombe, their Queen Anne house with Lutyens additions surrounded by thatched cottages and beautiful gardens on the South Devon coast. In the Cornish town of torpoint we hope to visit Antony House, an early 18th-century mansion with paintings, furniture, and textiles. Landscaped by Humphry Repton ( ), the grounds include a formal garden with topiary, modern sculptures, and the National Collection of Daylilies. Reaching mawnan smith, we ll check-in to Budock Vean, our luxurious home for the next four nights and where we ll dine this evening. Monday, May 19 Breakfast & Lunch Begin the day at Trebah Garden, a magical subtropical valley that descends to a pebble beach on the Helford River. We ll board a ferry to falmouth and meet our local guide, Charles Fox, a garden designer whose family has lived in the area since the early 17th century. A short walking tour of this worldfamous port city will include a visit to the National Maritime Museum. Ferry to st. mawes for lunch at the fashionable Tresanton Hotel with spectacular views of Falmouth Bay, followed by a special, private visit to Glendurgan Garden, founded by Charles great-great grandfather. We ll see the restored, early 19th-century maze and many exotic plants, before a Cornish cream tea with Charles and his wife, Caroline. Dinner tonight is at your leisure. Tuesday, May 20 Breakfast & Dinner Travel to st. austell to visit the Eden Project, a galactic crater holding two massive domed greenhouses that present the world s major plant systems in microcosm and tell the story of man s relationship with the natural world. This socalled Eighth Wonder of the World contains more than 70,000 plants. Lunch is at your leisure before we continue to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. This sprawling, overgrown Victorian estate was unearthed and restored in the early 1990s with Victorian productive gardens and pleasure grounds, a sub-tropical jungle, and walks through ancient woodland and beautiful Cornish countryside. Refresh at the hotel before a dinner at Indaba on the Beach, highlighting the bounty of the Southwest s waters. Wednesday, May 21 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner We ll board a scenic coastal train in st erth and travel to the idyllic seaside resort of st ives, an art mecca among the old tin mines of Cornwall. Sunk into the cliff face, the Tate St Ives is devoted exclusively to modern art. Its adjunct Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden gives remarkable insight into the work of Barbara Hepworth ( ), one of the great sculptors of the 20th century, and is housed in Hepworth s studio. After a beachside lunch we ll continue to penzance to visit the Penlee House Gallery and Museum, with paintings by members of the so-called Newlyn School from about 1880 to 1930 and exhibits devoted to West Cornwall history. On St. Michael s Mount, a spectacular granite-and-slate island with wonderful views and fascinating gardens, we ll visit the legendary 14th-century castle, home of the St. Aubyn family since Dinner tonight is at Budock Vean Hotel. Thursday, May 22 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Travel to wells where we ll visit the glorious gardens of Milton Lodge, an 18th century house with spectacular views of Wells Cathedral and the Vale of Avalon. The gardens were conceived in 1900 by Charles Tudway, the great-grandfather of current owner Simon Tudway-Quilter, who will escort us through the gardens before a private lunch. Continue to tetbury, where we ll check-in to Calcot Manor, a stylishly renovated 14thcentury farmhouse-turned-boutique hotel amid the leafy rural roll of the Cotswolds. You ll have time at your leisure before our farewell dinner in the hotel restaurant. Friday, May 23 Breakfast Before leaving Gloucestershire we ll visit the iconic gardens of Barnsley House, the former home of English garden legend Rosemary Verey ( ). Publicized through the designer s books and television appearances, the partly walled garden is planted in the Jekyll manner and has a lime walk, a lily pond, an ornamental vegetable garden, and statuary. Participants are expected to purchase travel insurance.
