To the right yo ll find a map of the camps, with a sggested rote for yo to take. As yo make yor way arond, yo ll be able to get a sense of the things that make Goldsmiths special from or interesting history and creative se of space, to the talented individals that stdy and work here. 3 Start yor jorney from the front of the Richard Hoggart Bilding A Richard Hoggart Bilding (part 1) Bilt in 1843, this bilding originally hosed a Royal Naval School. In 1891 the Worshipfl ompany of Goldsmiths sed the bilding to set p its Technical and Recreative Institte, providing edcational opportnities for the people of New ross. The University of London acqired the new Institte and re-established it as Goldsmiths ollege in The bilding is home to the epartments of Theatre and Performance, History, Visal ltres, and Msic (inclding prpose-bilt rehearsal rooms). It s also where yo ll find the Stdent entre. B Lewisham Way Rows of large period terraced hoses on both sides of the street contain academic and administrative offices, inclding the epartment of Anthropology. Looking to yor left, yo ll see a parade of shops and restarants which offer cheap eats and local amenities for or stdents. Trn left and take the steps down to ixon Road Behind this is the 12-storey Warmington Tower. It was bilt in 1969 as a prpose-bilt halls of residence, and was the first mixed halls at Goldsmiths. It now contains office space for some of or spport departments, and the epartments of nglish and omparative Literatre, Politics, and Sociology. Trn left and walk along ixon Road ntil yo are nderneath the walkway that crosses the road Rtherford Bilding dcation Bilding Warmington Tower With yor back to the Richard Hoggart Bilding, look in front of yo. Lewisham Way is the road that rns parallel to the bilding To yor right yo ll see the Rtherford Bilding, which contains or Library, open access compters (Macs and Ps), stdy spaces, Assistive Technology entre, igital Media Site, Media qipment entre and IT help-desk. The bilding was designed by Allies and Morrison, and won a Royal Institte of British Architects (RIBA) Award when it opened in irectly in front of yo is the dcation Bilding. Bilt in 1968, it hoses or epartment of dcational Stdies, which has been training teachers since Stdents Union Yo re now standing by the entrance to the Stdents Union. Inside there s a gallery and performance area as well as a bar and nightclb. The Union has an extensive entertainment programme, from comedy and karaoke to live msic and clb nights. id yo know that Blr held their first ever gig here? Now follow the road arond to the right and trn into Larie Grove 4 5

4 G Larie Grove (part 1) The Victorian hoses on this road contain the offices of academic and administrative departments, inclding the entre for ltral Stdies and the evelopment and Almni team. At Goldsmiths we re prod of or former stdents, many of whom have achieved great things in their chosen fields. They inclde Antony Gormley, Sam Taylor-Wood, Steve McQeen, Alex James, Katy B and Linton Kwesi Johnson. stdios and the entre for Urban and ommnity Research, althogh it retains many of its original featres. The bilding is open to the pblic each smmer dring or postgradate degree shows. The bilding had been described as one of the jolliest pblic bildings in London, bt had fallen into a state of disrepair before it was prchased by Goldsmiths in 2000, and restored to its former glory. The bilding hoses administrative offices and the old oncil hamber, which is reglarly sed as a performance vene for msic recitals. These performances are open to the pblic; find ot more at gold.ac.k/events. The bilding s architectral featres commemorate the area s maritime history, inside there are states of naval figres and mermen, and yo ll see a galleon weathervane poised on top of the clock tower. Looking to yor right across the road from the bilding, yo can see New ross Gate station, which has London Overgrond and National Rail connections to the centre of London. Goldsmiths is also served by another station, New ross, as well as bs rotes to the city and other areas of Soth ast London ontine along New ross Road and then take the first trning on the left into St James. Larie Grove Baths Bilding ontine down Larie Grove ntil yo get to New ross Road, then trn left and walk along to eptford Town Hall Bilding St James Hatcham Bilding Yo ll also see the distinctive Larie Grove Baths Bilding, which was bilt in 1898 and is Grade II-listed. The bilding was converted by Goldsmiths after the baths closed in the 1980s, and it now hoses postgradate art H eptford Town Hall Bilding Among the more notable bildings on the Goldmiths camps is the wonderfl eptford Town Hall. This Grade II-listed bilding opened in 1905, and originally hosed local government offices. I St James Yo re now on St James. On yor right yo ll see Loring Hall one of Goldsmiths halls of residence. Loring Hall contains self-catering accommodation for 388 stdents. The 6 7

5 Accommodation Office is on the grond floor of the Loring Hall Management entre. Many Goldsmiths halls are within walking distance of the ollege, and some are less than five mintes walk away. Opposite Loring Hall is St James Annexe, which contains or interactive design stdios, where stdents carry ot grond-breaking research. Look down St James and yo ll see the former parish chrch, the St James Hatcham Bilding, which contains stdio and performance space. The epartment of ompting and the epartment of Social, Therapetic and ommnity Stdies occpy several of the hoses along St James. At nmber yo ll find Hatcham Hose, which contains the Research Office a resorce that nrtres and promotes research activity at Goldsmiths. J Ben Pimlott Bilding Yo re now standing by the Ben Pimlott Bilding, named after a former Warden of Goldsmiths. The striking bilding was nveiled in 2005 and designed by Will Alsop and partners, who also designed Peckham Library. It hoses the entre for ognition, omptation and ltre and the Goldsmiths igital Stdios, as well as stdio space for stdents in the epartment of Art. The soth-facing bilding gets a lot of natral light, and is the perfect setting for the Art degree shows every smmer. the contry. The areers Service offers spport, gidance and practical advice to stdents and recent gradates, ensring they re prepared for life beyond stdy. Many of the Victorian hoses and bildings on Larie Grove and neighboring streets hose academic departments and ttors offices, inclding those from esign, Msic, and Theatre and Performance. The onfcis Institte for ance and Performance is at nmber 17. L ollege Green As yo walk towards the ollege Green yo ll see the entrance to the George Wood Theatre on yor left. Part of the epartment of Theatre and Performance, it s named after the Goldsmiths first Registrar, and seats 160 people. The theatre was originally the Naval School s chapel and was converted in the 1960s. Straight ahead is the ollege Green sitated at the heart of the camps. It s sed for sports training, and dring or Gradation eremonies. After a ceremony in the Great Hall, gradates move to a marqee on the ollege Green to celebrate with family and friends. Now walk towards the Green and to yor right, stopping otside the white and yellow bilding The bilding s sclptral scribble has become a featre of the Soth- ast London skyline. It weighs 27 tonnes and wold be 534 metres long if stretched ot twice the height of the anary Wharf Tower. 6 Whitehead Bilding Lockwood Bilding lb Plse Yo re now otside the Whitehead Bilding. Bilt in 1968, it had a mltimillion pond makeover in It hoses the epartment of Psychology (as well as labs for dcational Stdies), the Gradate School, and some Professional Services departments. Inside, the Ian Glland Lectre Theatre seats 300. On the far side of the ollege Green, to yor right, is the Lockwood Bilding. Bilt in 1962, it hoses the epartment of esign, inclding a variety of specialist workshops. The bilding is also home to or camps gym, lb Plse, which is open to stdents, staff and members of the pblic. It boasts a gym, stdio space, exercise classes, and an impressive view of the ollege Green from the treadmills pstairs! Now walk arond the perimeter of the Green, and p the steps towards the Professor Start Hall Bilding P M O M N O P Professor Start Hall Bilding Opened in 2010, the Professor Start Hall Bilding, is the biggest investment in the Goldsmiths camps for a generation. It s home to the epartment of Media and ommnications, the Institte for reative and ltral ntreprenership (I), and the Institte of Management Stdies (IMS). In all of or media practice areas we have prpose-bilt facilities that emlate crrent indstry practice. These inclde radio and TV stdios, post-prodction facilities, video and sond editing sites, digital animation facilities, photography stdios, and a 120-seat screening room. Other facilities available inclde open access compters and wireless hbs. Behind the bilding there is workshop space for the epartments of Art and esign. Walk along the side of the Professor Start Hall Bilding and past the tennis corts.
