2 Introduction In 1769 William Mackworth Praed built in Georgian style, as the Assembly Rooms, The Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter. In 1770, Pierre Berlon, the French proprietor of the Assembly Rooms placed an advert using the word hotel for the first time in England. Jenkin s 1806 History of Exeter described the hotel thus: The only house, worthy of notice in its parish is, The Hotel, a large commodious Inn, with elegant apartments and Hotel accommodation for people of the first quality, with a large assembly room in which assize balls, concerts and assemblies of the most distinguished persons of City and Country take place, in the front is a neat coffee room. The situation of The Hotel is very pleasant as it opens to the parade and commands a noble view of the Cathedral. Over the years famous visitors to the hotel included Queen Adelaide, Admiral Lord Nelson, Franz Liszt, Lord Louis Mountbatten, Clark Gable and Gary Cooper just to mention a few. The Clarence went through many changes over the years to accommodate the changing needs of the clientele. The historical heritage of the hotel was possibly unprecedented in the UK. Not since the blitz of 1942 had the historic heritage of Exeter suffered so badly until the devastating fire at The Royal Clarence Hotel on 28 October The following incident report details the fire s progress as it ravaged through The Royal Clarence and the operation to contain its spread and to extinguish it. The movement of resources, both physical and equipment wise, is a revelation. Topography The Royal Clarence Hotel faces the Cathedral and to the right, as you face the hotel, is Martin s Lane. The hotel is on the corner and on the opposite corner is The Ship Inn with the next property in Martin s Lane, going towards High Street, being the Mountain Warehouse store. To the rear of the Clarence, in High Street, is Sketchers Shoes, Laura Ashley s and Costa Coffee shops. To the left of the hotel, going towards South Street is the Gallery, Watches and Ridgway Shoes shops. The Royal Clarence Hotel is located in the busy retail centre of Exeter and the fire caused major disruption and inconvenience including the diversion of traffic and public transport. Devon & Somerset FRS put on record thanks for the public s overwhelming messages of support and assistance including complimentary food and drinks for the firefighters. Timeline Time Time elapsed Time of call First three appliances mobilised st Appliance in attendance (Danes Castle on-call) appliances mobilised appliances mobilised th appliance in attendance th appliance in attendance th appliances in attendance th appliance in attendance th appliance in attendance Total pumping appliances used, including repeat visits by the same appliance; 231 Total number of firefighters: 1,186 Different appliances that attended (does not include repeat visits): 95 Aerial ladders that attended: 5 Maximum number of firefighter on scene at the same time: 207 Maximum number of appliances on scene at the same time; 38 Total firefighter hours at the incident: 12, Total hours committed by on-call firefighter: 9, Fire Spread The spread of the fire is believed to have been aided by voids and spaces created by the age of the buildings and proximity of the buildings, together with the materials and nature of construction of the old, complex and timber built buildings involved. Water Supplies The FRS reported that the fire hydrants performed as expected throughout the incident. However, as the incident progressed the number of pumps being used overwhelmed the water supply from High Street and a High Volume Pumping Appliance was deployed to draw water from the River Exe. It was also reported that the pump on a fire engine supplying an aerial appliance failed. This appliance was replace within 20 minutes and whilst this took place fire fighting tactics were adjusted. Acknowledgements The Editorial Team wishes to thank Devon and Somerset FRS, Eddie Baker, Bob Smith and Eric Chapman for supplying information and material to allow this feature to be published. The incident report was held over from the South West Area Report in Fire Cover 216 with the agreement of the Area Secretaries, to allow it to be delivered in a more comprehensive format. fire scale Modelling Correspondent: Ralph Horton, 21, Hollybank Grove, Hayley Green, HALESOWEN B63 1BT fbsfirecover@gmail.com All model photos, unless stated: Ralph Horton Notes on the incident At the height of the incident there were approximately 150 firefighters actively involved and 207 were at the scene during one handover period. There were around 100 firefighters at the scene for the first three days around the clock. At the height of the incident 27 pumping appliances were actively involved in firefighting operations. During one handover period there were 57 fire service vehicles at the scene including 38 pumping appliances. There were four aerial appliances at the scene at the same time. 17 I have been reminded that in Fire Scale 206 (November 2014) I said I would report on progress with the restoration of my Buddy L Ladder Truck. Sadly my spare time has been absorbed by many things, of late being a member of the Management Working Party, hence restoration has stalled. However, my plan is to move this project forward over the coming winter...well that s the plan! In the late 1980s our model company, RSH Fire Models, was the first in the UK to produce a one-piece fire engine body model in resin, our Green Goddess. This was a great leap of faith as traditionally such models had been constructed from flat slab panels cast in white metal. We were uncertain if the fire engine market would accept this new material and approach. They did and over the years many cottage industry model manufacturers followed this lead. Little did we realise that the full size fire engine manufacturers would also adopt our approach and produce one-piece bodies in composite materials. With the rise in costs for tooling to manufacture models in metal, such as Mazak, a growing number of major model companies are adopting resin for the production of short run models. If the complete model is not resin often the bodywork is.
5 For the niche market of model fire engine the use of resin for their production has increased over the past decade. What is impressive is the quality and detail of resin fire engine models from the main manufacturers. In fact they are putting some cottage industry model manufacturers to shame. In the photo parade that follows the Neo, Masterpiece Collectibles and the rear body of the Eligor are all made in resin. The Masterpiece Collectibles models pictured boast stainless-steel shutter, front wheel steering and the ladders are constructed of individual stainless-steel, photo-etched, side rails with separate ladder rungs fitted between them.a real work of art! The Hong Kong Major Pump was produced in resin, in 1/50th scale, as a promotional model for Dennis / Carmichael in the late 1990s by RSH Fire Models. The next model from Masterpiece Collectibles, due in September, is the Scania P310 FROST vehicle of Singapore Civil Defence. FROST stands for Fire and Rescue Operations Support Tender. The actual vehicle is very impressive. I hope to bring full details of the FROST model in a future Fire Scale. Until next time, good collecting! : Front and rear images of Masterpiece Collectibles superb, 1/43rd scale, Dennis Sabre Pump Ladder in the livery of the Singapore Civil Defence.
