1 Dawlish & South West rail restoring the railway 19 February

2 Dawlish storm 5 February Dawlish sea wall breached on 5 th Feb the most destruction caused since Victorian times 19 February

3 Dawlish storm make the site safe Following the storm on 5 February we had to cut away the track. To protect the site from further damage we: Placed 11 steel containers filled with stones, weighing 70 tonnes, to act as a breakwater Sprayed the hole with concrete to help prevent further loss to the sea 19 February

4 Dawlish storm 12 February Progress as of 12 Feb Temporary sea wall built and debris removed work now starts to repair (6hrs on, 6hrs off) services scaffold nearing completion. Base foundation precast materials 60% on site. 65% of the sea wall debris (400m of damage) recovered. Town centre road debris cleared and ballast restored in readiness for re-fencing. 19 February

6 After last weekend s storm on 14 February Concrete spray generally sound with some minor washout Scaffold cable bridge requires checking for safety and associated remedial work Additional 20m 40m of Track panels require removing on both sides and access ramp reforming Breach Length 100m (top) A volume increase of 25% - 30% 11 No Units in place, but distorted/di slodged and require filling and strapping Four more containers have been filled and placed in this gap with eight more ordered for placement this weekend Additional 20m of Higher Level Sea Wall and Parapet Lost 19 February

7 After last weekend s storm on 14 February There was further damage to the main sea wall increased by approx 22m, approximately 10% (right). However, our container wall did hold up and potentially saved properties from falling into the sea (left) 19 February

8 Restoring the railway at Dawlish Our engineers have made a heroic effort to rebuild the line The further damage caused by the second storm made us reassess our work plan for Dawlish Now we have assessed the damage from both storms we can confirm the railway will be open by mid-april in time for Easter If the weather and other factors allow we may be able to restore services sooner However, this relies upon: Fair weather A smooth supply chain The progress of the work at Dawlish can be viewed here through our live feed 19 February

10 Top 10 resilience interventions - secured 19 February

11 Long term planning process Western route study started last year and is due to conclude spring Its purpose is to determine where best to invest. We will accelerate the part of the western route study to focus on the options west of Exeter. This accelerated study will look at ALL reasonable options and will consult openly with relevant stakeholders. We are finalising the remit of this study with operators, government and local stakeholders. We will then confirm the precise timing of the next steps on these long term options. 19 February

12 Alternative route options (1) We need to be thorough and provide long-term solution for the railway. Currently we are taking views and exploring all options. Suggested options include: a) Reinstate the Okehampton line (between Plymouth-Exeter, via Okehampton), which closed in 1967 b) Create a new line connecting existing freight lines from Alphington (near Exeter) and Heathfield (near Newton Abbot) c) Options between Newton Abbot and Exeter (with new tunnels) but current level of trains via Dawlish route could be maintained i) Exminster Newton Abbot ii) Starcross Newton Abbot iii) Dawlish Warren Newton Abbot d) Make the coastal railway more resilient 19 February
