2 . Welcome Croeso cynnes iawn a warm welcome to Wales Rally GB, one of the UK s leading motorsports events. We re looking forward to the 05 event and to building on the past two years which have been such a success with fans and competitors alike and have given a major boost to the north Wales economy. It s widely recognised that Wales has some of the finest rally stages anywhere in the world. The spectacular scenery and landscapes of North Wales will again provide the perfect backdrop for Wales Rally GB. RallyFest stages set against stunning backdrops such as Chirk Castle proved to be a big hit and extended the appeal of the Rally. The Welsh Government s support for the Rally also shows our continued commitment to Wales Rally GB, which has significant links with the automotive sector in Wales. Wales is home to around 50 component and systems manufacturing companies and has 7,000 people employed in automotive manufacturing with an annual turnover of 3 billion. Enjoy your time in Wales and at the Rally of Legends, and I hope you find time to visit some of the outstanding attractions our country has to offer while you re here. Ken Skates Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism Welsh Government

3 Welcome to Wales Rally GB an award-winning event that just keeps getting better and better since its move to a new base in north Wales. This will be the third year that the concluding round of the FIA World Rally Championship has had its headquarters in Deeside and November s finale will continue to build on the many notable successes of the past 4 months. While we are delighted that these achievements have been recognised recently with the award of the coveted Best Event (Large) accolade at the National Tourism Awards for Wales 05, we are far from resting on our laurels. As a result, we are confident this year s Wales Rally GB will be the best yet. For starters the competitive route for 05 sees the re-introduction of the famous Myherin and iconic Great Orme stages last seen in 03. The former is always is great favourite with competitors while the latter provides one of the most stunning backdrops on the globe-trotting WRC calendar. As tradition dictates the majority of the thrilling timed sections are set on some of the world s finest gravel tracks in the awe-inspiring Welsh forests. Adding to the challenge and spectacle, two of these epic stages will be held after sunset on Saturday. Thanks to our enthusiastic partners in Conwy County Borough Council the event commences on Thursday evening with a sparkling Ceremonial Start on what s sure to be a crowded Mostyn Street in Llandudno. The dramatic high-speed action then blasts off early Friday morning on familiar Wales Rally GB territory in mid-wales. There are double runs through the well-known Hafren, Sweet Lamb and Myherin stages, either side of a lunchtime regroup on the busy streets of central Newtown. Saturday offers an even longer and more challenging day starting with back-to-back runs through the classic Gartheiniog and Dyfi forests to the north of Machynlleth. The route returns to Deeside via the fast and tricky Dyfnant and Aberhirnant stages and the well-established, family-friendly RallyFest at Chirk Castle. After a short service, the intrepid crews then set out for a second run through both Dyfnant and Aberhirnant, this time under cover of darkness. Sunday is a shorter but no less spectacular day set entirely in north Wales. The Brenig and Alwen stages introduced last year both feature again, with the second run through Brenig being Wales Rally GB s concluding Power Stage. In-between comes the wonderful test around the Great Orme. This year s Ceremonial Finish and prize-giving have been relocated to the Service Park at Deeside, ensuring that celebrations can take place among the teams and fans to create a memorable finale to the 05 WRC season. It all adds up to 9 Special Stages and 3 kms (9 miles) of fiercely fought competition for what we are certain will be a brilliant conclusion to this year s FIA World Rally Championship. The popularity of the National Rally is another important factor in the recent success story and, ensuring crews from all levels of the sport within the UK can be part of a World Championship rally, the route for the WRGB National Rally shadows the international event and, by popular demand, the teams are also based in Deeside. It s been written that this year s route is a celebration of everything that s good and great about the present and past of Britain s round of the WRC. Praise indeed but we are confident the 05 Wales Rally GB will build on all the recent massive accomplishments and fully live up to everyone s everescalating expectations. I wish you all a very safe, enjoyable and successful Wales Rally GB and thank you for being such an important part of this great event. Alan Gow Chairman, The Motor Sports Association 3

73 Safety Tracking System Manual 3 Antennas The SIT Sports Tracking unit needs three antennas: UHF, dual GPS-GSM and GPS Antennas. UHF and dual GPS-GSM antennas must be installed on the roof of the car and the GPS antenna inside the car with a clear view to the sky, i.e. attached to the rear window. Please check the following drawing and install the antennas according to the recommended set-up: Antenna Set-up UHF GPS- Dual GPS-GSM IMPORTANT! All the antennas should be separated at least 700 mm from any other antenna (live TV patch, live TV UHF antenna, voice radio VHF antennas, etc.). The antenna cables should be routed away from the vehicle wiring when possible. UHF Antenna. Should be installed centered in the middle of the roof. A hole should be made to fix the antenna on the roof. IMPORTANT! Carefully match the PL59 antenna connector antenna to the radio and do not use any adaptor or connector. If there is any excess coax cable do not coil the cable. Coiling coax cable will cause transmit problems and limit radio range. 4 SIT SPORTS, S.L. Ctra. 74 Safety Tracking System Manual Dual GPS-GSM Antenna and GPS- Antenna Dual GPS GSM Antenna Cable length: 500 mm Connector: Fackra x (Blue GPS / Red GSM) GPS Antenna Cable length: 3000 mm Connector: SMA male 4 Installation SIT Sports will provide with only one Y power splitter cable, the main end of this cable should be connected to the tracking box and the two other ends to the safety console and power supply (+VCC, Ground and Ignition). Please ensure direct connection to power (+VDC) before the circuit breaker with a 5A fuse protection. The ignition line must supply +VDC too (it can be connect to the same terminal that +VCC). Do not cut, shorten or bend the cable especially near the connector. Signal VCC (+V) GROUND IGNITION Cable Red Blue Yellow Wiring and power supply The red and blue wires should be directly connected to the battery before the master switch. The yellow wire must be connected to volts (it can be connect to the same terminal that VCC red wire - ). During installation, try to route the DC battery leads, the antenna lead or any accessory wires away from the engine compartment, ignition or alternator wiring. Higher frequency electrical interference caused by electric motors can be suppressed directly at the motor terminals. Please pay special attention to the grounding. It is important to guarantee a good ground in 5 the UHF antenna. This grounding practice is especially important when there are other sensitive electronic components (e.g. MCUs, analog circuits) as the noise induced in the SIT SPORTS, S.L. Ctra. Barrio de la Fortuna nº 0, Hangar 8054 Madrid ground loop by the ground current can be significant if not taken care of properly 74

75 Safety Tracking System Manual 5 IMPORTANT REMARKS In order to reduce the level of RF interference, please observe the following precautions when you install. Place the tracking unit as far away from the motor as physically possible. Keep the antenna cable separated from the engine compartment and power cables. Place all antennas away from the motor. Install the UHF antenna as far as possible away from the ECU and sensors of the vehicles electronic system. Install the antenna feeder at least 00 mm (7.87in.) away from the ECU and sensors of the vehicles electronic systems. Avoid winding the antenna feeder together with the other wiring as much as possible, and also avoid running the antenna feeder parallel with other wire harnesses. Check that the UHF antennas is correctly adjusted and recheck the RF ground system, the RF grounding system is highly recommended to be separately from the DC or electrical ground. Please inform about any other mobile communications system installed that may be affecting the UHF communication. Check the grounding you are using. Please also remember: The SIT Sports tracking unit and base must be fitted and connected before arrival at scrutineering where it will be checked by SIT Sports engineers. If you retire from the rally you must return all tracking equipment to SIT Sports at the Service Park as it was given to you, as soon as possible. Any damage to the system will have to be paid for by the competitor. A complete price list is available from SIT Sports. The SIT Sports Tracking unit, base, transponders and any other loaned equipment must be removed during the final service and returned to SIT Sports within 30 minutes of the closing of the final Time Control. 6 SIT SPORTS, S.L.
