3 A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT 3 Hello everyone and welcome to Spring. I wonder if sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live in a town like Torquay and we may even take for granted the fun and friendship we have with this club. We are fortunate that we have some wonderful convenors that bring a variety of activities to you all. There is one convenor in particular I would like to draw your attention to and that is Maurie Dean. Maurie has been putting our members through their paces at Resistance Training sessions for the last fourteen years. Actually Maurie has been training our members since the inception of our club and he is revered amongst all members who participate in his sessions. So it is with great sadness that I must announce Maurie s retirement. According to the president at LAC Victoria we are the only club who has had our own fitness trainer so we have been very blessed. However, although Maurie is leaving I am happy to announce that Resistance Training will continue. We have sourced the services of two trained local ladies, Kylie and Zarah who will share the classes on Monday Wednesday and Friday mornings from Bernie Convery and Ros Leary will be the new convenors and Bernie will also be in charge of the maintenance of the equipment. Our new trainers are qualified with current relevant certificates and their own public liability insurances, therefore, all sessions will be $5.00. I hope you support the changes and continue to enjoy keeping fit together. Of course we may put in extra classes if the demand is there. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Maurie on behalf of the Committee and all the members for the years of service he has given to our club. Thank you Maurie and enjoy your retirement. Cheers, Anne G Our Thursday walking group on their recent visit to the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne (thanks Anne) Farewell to Maurie. On Monday August 29th the Resistance Training group got together at morning tea to thank Maurie Dean for 14 years help and encouragement. His efforts have been much appreciated in helping members fitness and also giving people the chance to interact socially, as the sessions are conducted in a friendly sociable way, followed by a cuppa and chat. Maurie was presented with gift vouchers as a token of appreciation. (Thanks Dave for pics) THE CHUM DIET AGAIN Yesterday I was at Coles buying a large bag of Chum dog food for my loyal pet. In the checkout queue a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.. What did she think I had, an elephant? So, since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Chum Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn t, because I ended up in hospital last time, but I'd lost 2 stone before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Chum nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in queue was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off the kerb to sniff an Irish Setter's backside and a car hit me. I thought the bloke behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. I'm now banned from Coles. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of daft things to say.
