In 1919 pioneer orchardist Clarence George (Peter) Morris and wife, Minnie bought nine acres of virgin land in Fairfax Road Speers Point, (now Warners Bay). Inala Street Inala Street was gazetted on 25 July 2008, the Applicant was De Witt Consulting (Folio 7341). Kanangra Street Kanangra Street was gazetted on 25 July 2008, the Applicant was De Witt Consulting (Folio 7341). Kanangra is an Aboriginal word meaning beautiful view (Source: Aboriginal Words & Their Meanings by JH Sugden). Kanangra is also the name of a house that was on the land prior to subdivision. King Street The royalty theme used to be popular for naming streets. Originally called Myer Street, after an early resident. The land between King Street and Queen Street was once intended for a railway station and line. The High School is in King Street. It is part of Main Road 527, major roadworks were completed here in Mac s Timber and Hardware Shop was established in 1960 by Don McIntyre with one staff member. King Street was still a gravel road until sealed in the late 1960s. The business continued to grow over the years and in 2006, the family owned business employed more than fifty staff. Lake Street Leads to the foreshore. Seems to have been originally part of Warner s early subdivision. The Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre is in this street. During the 1960s, Frith s Foodland Store opened in Lake Street and in 1970, this was sold to Savemores Ltd. The first dentist in Warners Bay, AR (Bob) Chapman opened his surgery in Lake Street in1958, opposite the Community Hall (now the Performing Arts Centre). Lawford Close Developed by landowners James Mullen Developments, From LMCC's street name list. There is a town in the UK named Lawford. 4

5 Lisa Avenue Owned and developed by Albert Hawkins & Sons, Named after a member of the Hawkins family. Lymington Way Named by LMCC 2002 and built by Civilake. Jonathon Warner s chosen name for his township has originally been Lymington, his hometown in the UK. The Lymington Mine was connected by skip-line to the colliery line in Cardiff South. Macquarie Road On Major William Parrott s map of 1892, the track from Warner s house to Cardiff is shown following the same course as present day King Street and Macquarie Road (Source: Warners Bay the Early Years by Peter Murray). In the early 1920s a skip line from Lymington Colliery crossed Macquarie Road with horse drawn skips taking the coal to the railway in Cardiff South (Source: Coal Railways and Mines: The Collieries of the Newcastle District by RB Andrews). Along Macquarie Road on former mining company, land there is a large industrial area. This is serviced by Enterprise Drive, a private road. Macquarie Road was proclaimed a Main Road, notified in NMH on 5 November, Macquarie Road is part of MR 527. Margaret Street This street was named after JC Bonarius' daughter Margaret. It was in his 1885 subdivision. Martin Street One of the early streets. Martin Street was in JC Bonarius' 1885 subdivision. Maurie Avenue Maurice Avenue was built in Medcalf Street Part built in 1908 from William Brooks land grant of 1280 acres. Biddabah Primary School is in this street. It is part of Main Road 674. A viewing platform is provided at Lakelands artificial lake. Milloba Close Built in 2002 by W Stronach Pty Ltd. This was one of the names given to the area by the Awabakal Aborigines and means place of fun a variation in spelling of this name is millabah (Source: Aborigines of the Hunter Region by Dept of Education Hunter Region). Mills Street Mills Street was declared on 5 March 1927 DP by the owners, Cardiff Borehole Colliery Ltd. The Infants School is in this street. Minnesota Way A James Mullen development. Minnesota is a state in the USA. Several Warners Bay streets are named Myles Avenue Thought to have originally been part of JC Bonarius' subdivision that failed. Later owned by Cardiff Borehole (Lymington) Colliery. It was named after Phoebe Myles, the first woman president of the Warners Bay Urban Committee in Ms Myles was a foundation member (Source: NMH 30 November 1966). Panorama Parade Developed by landowner May Veronica Taylor, Being located at the top of a hill may have been the reason for this name. Peachwood Close Owned by Eric James Williams. The Williams family had a peach orchard here. Plumridge Close Chosen from an RSL supplied list of Lake Macquarie WW2 veterans by LMCC, Postmans Lane An unnamed lane around John Street car park was named Postmans Lane in 2006 due to its proximity to the post office. Pring Street Seems to have been part of Warners subdivision, where little development occurred for some considerable time. Punt Road Punt Road is named in Warners land sale, Perhaps there had been a punt (or a proposed one) crossing of South (Snake) Creek before the first bridge was built. Queen Street The royalty theme used to be popular for naming streets. The land between King Street and Queen Street was once intended for a railway station and line. Poor land sales were the reason it was never built. Ramsbury Close From LMSC's street name list. Built in 1975 by landowners Marstan Holdings Ltd and others. Ramsbury is a town in the UK. Rayford Street Landowner was Eric James Williams, an orchardist. Part built in Robert Avenue Built in Royal Street The royalty theme used to be popular for naming streets. Developed by landowner May Veronica Taylor, Royal Street is a companion name with Coronation Street. 6

7 Ruswell Avenue Was part of Baybreeze Estate. Owned by A Lewis. Built in Originally called Ruswel, it was renamed Ruswell in 1990 by LMCC. Sadlier Close Built in 2002 by W Stronach Pty Ltd. Named after R Sadlier, the earliest known settler in the Speers Point area. This was before William Brooks received his land grant of 1280 acres. (Lake Macquarie Past & Present) Seaman Avenue Developed in 1938 by landowner Francis Feighan, originally called Park Street. The Boolaroo Urban Area Committee in 1954 decided to rename it Seaman Avenue due to confusion over the fact that there was an existing Park Street in Speers Point. Seaman Avenue was named after Alfred Seaman who had been President of the Committee for 6 years and a member for 15 years. There used to be a private museum owned by Harry Morton, described as a wonderland in a backyard shed. Newcastle Sun 1/10/65. Spencer Street Spencer Street was named in 1965, the signatories for the landowner South Newcastle Mining Co Ltd were; Henry Leighton Campbell, Phyllis Lorence Werrin and Allan Blythe Rowe. Starling Street Seems to have been part of one of the Warner family s subdivision, where little development occurred for some considerable time. Sweet Street Sweet Street was named in Bonarius s 1885 subdivision. Taylor Crescent Taylor Crescent was named after landowner W Taylor in Terone Close Terone Close was owned and developed in 1973 by A.A. Alam. The Esplanade In Warner s subdivision map of 1879, the Warners Bay section of the Government Road from Boolaroo was named simply Esplanade. The Esplanade is part of Main Road 527 going to Eleebana and 674 going to Speers Point from the King Street intersection. In the early 1930 s local residents erected the first dance hall in Warners Bay on land adjacent to the corner of The Esplanade and the Charlestown turn-off on Warners Bay Road. The first Pharmacy in Warners Bay was opened by Margaret Cunninghame Penfold in c This was bought by pharmacist Moiya Patricia Chapman in A few years later, her dentist husband Robert moved his surgery upstairs above the pharmacy. The Chapman family retained the pharmacy until Urban Lane Urban Lane was named in the Government Gazette in Vennard Street Seems to have been part of JC Bonarius' subdivision that failed. Later owned by Cardiff Borehole (Lymington) Colliery. Vermont Place A James Mullen development. Vermont is a state in the USA. Several Warners Bay streets are named Vincent Street Named after Charles and Elizabeth Feighans' son. The Feighan family came to Warners Bay in

8 Virginia Street The Council said Virginia Street was not part of the subdivision that named streets after US states. Possibly, this name relates to a girl s first name and was developed in Walker Street Part of Bonarius' 1885 subdivision. Little development occurred for many years. Warner Street Named after Jonathon Warner, one of the earliest settlers in Lake Macquarie. His land grant was two square miles. Warners Bay Road Originally, parts of this road were Mary Street and William Street, named after members of Jonathon Warner's family. These streets were renamed Warners Bay Road. On Major William Parrott s map of 1892, the track from Warner s house to Charlestown is probably the same track cut out in 1825 by Threlkeld and his helpers. The following quote featured in the Newcastle Herald on 4 June1903: The main thoroughfare from Warners Bay is in good order, it is intended to carry this through to Charlestown. This is part of Main Road 325. The Lymington Village, a private over 55s resort living development opened in 2005 in Warners Bay Road. Watt Street This is the short driveway entrance to Biddabah School. Built in Wellham Close Named after Neil Wellham, LMCC engineer. Named by Clive Fry, landowner & developer, Wellings Street Part of JC Bonarius' subdivision that failed. Later owned by Cardiff Borehole (Lymington) Colliery. Wellings Street was tar sealed in Whitby Street Built in Named by landowner and developer, Clive Fry. This was his mother s maiden name. Whyte Street Named in 1988 by Clive Fry, landowner & developer, after Dennis Whyte, road sub-contractor. Wilton Close Developed in 1988 by landowner, Clive Fry. From LMCC's street name list, there is a town named Wilton in the UK. Winterlake Road Named and developed in 1976 by A A Alam. Yorston Street Named after landowner George Linklater Yorston who was married to Jonathon Warner s daughter, Naomi.
