1 Toronto Street Names By Clive Read 2001 Ada Street Ada Street was originally part of the Terzeny Park farm owned by Chapman and Lyster (or Leicester) and was surveyed in the Sunderland subdivision in There is an industrial area in Ada Street. Akora Street Akora is an Aboriginal word meaning 'camp, hut, dwelling' (Source: Aboriginal Words & Their Meanings by J.H. Sugden). Akora Street was built in Aldinga Close Aldinga is an Aboriginal word meaning 'plenty of trees and much water (Source: Aboriginal Words & Their Meanings by J.H. Sugden). Aldinga is a town in S.A. Aldinga Close was built in Anzac Parade Was originally called North Street but because there were a number of WW1 returned soldiers living there the name was changed to ANZAC Parade (Source: NMH 1 August 1944). This street was part of the 1891 DP 2505 subdivision by Excelsior Land Co. It is on a section of Main Road 217 and then goes along the waterfront. There is a BBQ picnic area and a boat launching ramp. The Lions Park holds Sunday markets. Arnott Avenue Named after the Arnott Family (the biscuit manufacturers) in Their residence is on the waterfront nearby. W. Arnott purchased land here in 1891 subdivision DP The Royal Motor Yacht Club began in 1927 and during WW2 became a RAAF Recreation Centre. Awaba Road An early government road named from its destination, Awaba. On a 1953 Council plan it is named Main Road and on a 1955 plan it is named Awaba Road. It is part of Main Road 220. The cemetery dates back to the early 1900's but there are earlier unnamed graves there. The NSW State Forest workshop depot is in this street. There used to be a plaster works and timber yards here. During the 1930 s cycle road racing was held here commencing at a shop (later called Eddy s Corner), the course was along past Awaba, with junior and senior events. The council owned Toronto Indoor Swimming Pool is at the intersection with Carleton Street. Early maps show a ford or crossing of Stony Creek nearby, perhaps a bridge had been proposed at one time. This crossing is known locally as Flaggy Crossing. Brighton Avenue Subdivided in 1891 DP 2505 by the Excelsior Land Co. Brighton is a commonly used name near holiday, water, and seaside places. There is a town with this name in the UK. A few items of interest - the Fire Station (built in 1967), the Anglican Church (built in 1965), the Station Masters Cottage, Toronto Anglican Care Nursing Home, and Goffet Park (where the War Memorial was relocated to). Claret Ash Close Claret Ash is one of the large families of ash trees, a feature of which is their autumn leaf colours. Dewrang Crescent was built in Donnelly Avenue Walter Donnelly was the proprietor of the Toronto Hotel for nearly 25 years, and he did much to promote Toronto in earlier times.
