Davies the first Lake Macquarie Shire Clerk serving for 25 years. Durie Road Built in 1966 by Milne Browne & Co. and named after George Durie who served for many years on the Lake Macquarie Shire Council and was Deputy President for four terms. Edward Street An 1889 street, the original landowner was Michael MacNamara and probably named after a relative. There is a theme of US town names in Cardiff streets Fern Valley Road Around 1902 the Fern Valley area was owned by Thomas MacNamara and his sister Margaret Harrison. Old residents said the area justified its name. H Ford had a shop in 1931 in Fern Valley Road. The Fern Valley Montessori Primary School is here. Fifth Street This street was part of Shadrach Morgan s 1875 Coalbrook subdivision. Land sales were held in Florence Street An 1889 street, the landowners were Samuel Quintrell or Michael MacNamara. There may have been a connection with Florence subdivision held by Charles Ellis in the area around Gillian Crescent Gillian Crescent was built in 1960 by Country Estates Pty Ltd. A first name street. Gorleston Terrace Built in 1927, the owners were (Council records indistinct) Robert (B?), Christopher (?Wallace) and (?) Neil (surname). Gorleston is a town in the UK. Government Road Subdivided in 1918 by Assurance & Thrift Association and Lang Wood & Co. Tickhole Creek flows under Government Road into Winding Creek. Hansen Street An 1889 street. Longworth Avenue Had been an unnamed street and was named on 10 September1940 by a resolution of council, Herb Longworth was an old resident; his parents had been early Cardiff orchardists. Louisa Avenue Louisa Avenue was built in Lovell Street A 1926 street and named after the owner (Council records are indistinct) Lovell. Lowry Street Lowry Street was built in 1926 and possibly named after the first and long serving Lake Macquarie Shire Engineer A H Lowry. Mac Street An 1889 street, the landowner was Michael MacNamara and the street was named after him. A later subdivision named Macksville Estate was held where A F Hall was the surveyor and Creer and Berkeley were the auctioneers. McIntyre Street McIntyre Street was built in 1961 by Leo Kosiuk. Maclean Close A 1976 Newcastle Gas Company street development. Horace Maclean was an old resident, his parents coming to Cardiff in1882 had been early orchardists. Mrs C Maclean had been the local nurse. Macquarie Road A rough bush road existed between Cardiff and Warners Bay from early times. This was called Government Road. In the 1889 Macquarie Subdivision, it was named Macquarie Road, leading towards Warners Bay. The Newcastle Wallsend Coal Co, the landowner, held subsequent land sales and the L.M. Shire Council began road improvements after Cardiff s first railway platform was named Winding Creek. It was almost opposite the R.S.L. Club. There 5

6 were level crossing railway gates on Macquarie Road; the gatekeeper was Mrs F Williams. Cardiff public school is in this street. In earlier times, Macquarie Road used to connect with Kelton Street before the Harry Ford Reserve and fountain were built. The reserve and fountain were opened by P.D. Hills MLA on 2 August Harry Ford had a shop in Macquarie Road in The RSL Club was built in There were many more shops and businesses too numerous to mention here. With petrol rationing during the war special buses for miners ran from Cardiff to John Darling, Burwood, and Lambton Collieries. The Winding Creek Bridge on Macquarie Road was built by DMR in In 2008 the Harry Ford Reserve was rezoned by Council and Woolworths acquired the land for inclusion in a new shopping centre being built. This was to replace the Food For Less grocery store lost in a fire in The Woolworths Shopping Centre reopened in Macquarie Road is part of Main Road 527. Main Road An early road leading towards Newcastle, Main Road became part of Main Road 223. It was only the second road in Lake Macquarie Shire Council area to be tarsealed. This was done in The railway station was completed in 1904 and the Royal Hotel (Iron Horse Hotel) was built early in the 20 th century. A branch of the Wallsend & Plattsburg Co-op Store was here and taken over by Newcastle Store in 1961 and finally closing in Community singing was held in the Star Theatre during the 1930s and early 1940s, led by resident John Miner who had a fine singing voice. The early Southern Cross Picture Theatre was above the railway station until 1929 when the Star Picture Theatre opened in the shopping centre, lasting until One of H Ford s three Cardiff shops in 1931 was in Main Road. St Kevin s Primary School is in this street. The library opened in 1951 in the School of Arts and the library building was built in The early fire station building was here. There have been many more shops and businesses over the years too numerous to mention here. Maple Street Was in the Greenlands Estate part owned by H Merrion and developed by Burke Naughton Pty Ltd in 1952, their streets were named after trees. Margaret Street Margaret Street built in 1914 was part of Michael McNamara s property and named after his daughter Margaret. The Masonic Hall was built in Marianne Street Marianne Street built in 1914 was part of Michael McNamara s property and named after his daughter Marianne, also known as Mary Anne. (Source: P. A. Haslam NMH 10 August 1968). Mary Street Mary Street built in 1914 was part of Michael McNamara s property, and named after his wife Mary. May Street An 1889 street, the landowners were Samuel Quintrell or Michael MacNamara. 6

7 Medlow Street Medlow Street was built in Merewether Street Built in 1930, the owners were C B Thompson and (?) Archer, records are indistinct. A cricket club was founded in this area in Merrion Way Merrion Way was an unnamed lane until named by Government Gazette on 19 August Named after Herbert Merrion s bakehouse that began in Mr Merrion served his time as a baker with William Arnott at Cooks Hill. The Woolworths complex is on this street. Michael Street Built in 1914 by John Alexander Harrison and named after his relative Michael MacNamara the original landowner. Mitchell Road Built in 1972 and named after explorer Thomas L Mitchell. In Qld and ACT Mitchell is named after him. Munibung Road An Aboriginal word believed to mean fruit although this has not been substantiated, a 1919 street the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Company were the landowners, its name coming from Munibung Hill nearby. Munibung Road leads to a large industrial area. The Cardiff Workers Club opened in 1957, later called Club Nova, and now named Panthers Cardiff. During the war years a small open cut coalmine operated here. Murray Road Believed to have been built during the 1920 s. Robert Murray was an orchardist in Myall Road An early road. In the 1889 subdivision part of this road was named Railway Parade. Cricket was played here in 1901 on Peter Honson s property. Myall Colliery opened in 1918 near Garden Suburb. The Cardiff Bowling club began in 1952.This name remained until about Myall is an Aboriginal word meaning a small silver grey wattle, this meaning is given for the Myall Lakes. (Source: Australian Place Names by B& B Kennedy). Myall Road is Main Road 7769 leading through Garden Suburb to the West Charlestown Bypass Road. Nelson Road Built in 1966 by Milne Browne & Co. Newcastle Street An 1889 street it connects with Main Road going to Newcastle. This could be the reason for its name. It is said to have been part of Peter Honson s original land grant. A signal box was near this street for the coal trains to enter the (then) main line. In 1919, the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Company held land sales. The Newcastle Street railway bridge crosses over a cutting, which accommodates the mainline. Norfolk Street The Greenlands Estate part owned by H Merrion was developed by Burke Naughton Pty Ltd in Their streets were named after trees. 7

8 Old Main Road Old Main Road existed between Oxley Parade and Macquarie Road (north). However, not a direct extension of Willie Street it was recommended that it be named Willie Street on 17 June Oxley Parade Built in the 1919 subdivision by the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Company in conjunction with Macquarie Road. Named after John Oxley, explorer. Eventually its name was changed to Main Road possibly in Today it is part of Main Road 223. Palm Street The Greenlands Estate, part owned by H Merrion, was developed by Burke Naughton Pty Ltd in Their streets were named after trees. Park Street Subdivided in 1918 by Assurance & Thrift Association and Lang Wood & Co. Paul Street Paul Street built in 1956 was part of the Stewart Estate. Pavilion Place Built by Erolmore Pty Ltd in It is located in the industrial area where a number of firms exhibit their products and services. Pearce Street Pearce Street was built in 1929 and named after the owner G Pearce. Pendlebury Road Was originally part of May Street and renamed on 7 October 1966 after Thomas Richard Pendlebury Lake Macquarie Shire councillor and president for five terms. Pennant Street On a LMCC street name list. Pennant is a town in Wales. Pennant Street is in an industrial area. Penylan Street Was an unnamed road until named by a resolution of council on 25 September On a LMSC street name list. Penylan is a town in Wales. Queens Avenue An 1889 street the landowner is believed to have been Samuel Quintrell. There was a King Street planned also but this apparently became a reserve. Mrs Margaret Edwards from the early Cardiff family gave a substantial donation for the forming of Queens Avenue. The Cardiff dairy farm used to be in this street. Railway Parade An 1889 street, the landowner was Michael MacNamara. This street was named Alfred Street until about The early coal company s rail line had been near this street giving it this name. Ranton Street On a LMCC street name list. Ranton is a town in the USA. There is a US theme in Cardiff. 8

9 Reservoir Road Named by Edwin Lowery who had a large poultry farm at the intersection of this street and Lake Road in the 20 s and 30 s. There were reservoirs near both ends of the street at that time. Roath Street Was an unnamed road until named by a resolution of council on 25 September On a LMSC street name list.
