In 1841 Ellen s parents and brothers and sisters had moved to live in Dragley Beck Ulverston. She however was a servant to the Kitson family in Lancaster. By 1851 her sister had also come to Lancaster for she was a maid to the Housman family in Skerton. Ellen was newly married to Thomas Ball who was originally from Leek in Staffs and a draper. They were living in Leonardgate, as they also were in By this time Thomas was a book keeper. The Lancaster Gazette of 17 th September 1870 announced that Ellen had died after a protracted illness. Leek, Staffs At the time of the 1871 census Ellen s sister, Margaret, was living with the family of the recently widowed Thomas still at 16 Leonardgate, and was with them in 1881 as well. Thomas was now a ship broker, as he was twenty years later in 1891 at which time he lived with three of his children in Lindow Square. Thomas was on the Board of Guardians of the Lancaster Union. It appears that ever since the death of her mother Ellen Dunn filled the role of family housekeeper.
