Morgan s Vale and Woodfalls History Trail (You could start at any point and follow the trail round)
1) MORGAN S VALE & WOODFALLS PRIMARY SCHOOL Built in 1869, it served as a church on Sundays until the Church was built. Modern extensions have been added to blend in with the original building. 2) ST. BIRINUS CHURCH Designed by C. Pointing and built in from local bricks in the Italianate Style. The roof tiles were also manufactured in the Parish. It cost 2000 to build.
3) LYNTON (OPPOSITE) This was Braybrook s Butchery from about 1911 until the mid-1970s. Sausages and faggots were made in the premises. Alfred Braybrook first opened it and it had its own slaughter house. (Walk along Morgan s Vale Road towards The Ridge) 4) CORNER of MORGAN S VALE ROAD Previous site of the War Memorial, erected in memory of those who had died in the Great War and unveiled on 6 June Moved in 1976 because it was considered to be a traffic hazard. (Opposite corner. Site of Herbert Smith s Iron Works and later, engineering works/garage until the 1970s. A restaurant and take-away now occupies the site). Look across The Ridge to:
5) BOWER S HILL Named after Peter Bower ( ) Clockmaker known for his 30-hour long case clocks. 6) THE LODGE (to Redlynch House) Built in the mid-victorian period, it is a Listed Building.
7) WAR MEMORIAL Moved to this site and re-dedicated in A large pond was originally here, which was used by horses pulling carts. Kiln Lane, alongside, had brick and iron industries in the mid-18 th century until about (Turn right along The Ridge)
8) MORGAN S VALE & WOODFALLS VILLAGE HALL Built as a Church Hall in on land given by Frances Robinson of Redlynch House, in memory of her husband Octavius (see plaque on wall). (Continue along The Ridge, noticing the Manse which was once used by the Methodist Ministers. Just before this, where a modern house now stands, was in the early 1900s, a small shop managed by Frank Hayter, a baker) 9) WOODFALLS CARE HOME Formerly Highcliffe Walter Hickman opened his Corn merchants in 1880, but the building was re-built in 1900 when the original taller, steam driven mill was destroyed by a fire.
10) WOODFALLS METHODIST CHURCH Built in 1874 by Charles Mitchell (see date on building). It has been extended several times. In 2003 there was further refurbishment and the present porch was added. 11) THE OLD INN Originally called the New Inn, it was re-fronted and re-named in There was a village pond here. A Whitsuntide Fair used to be held on a large field to the rear, where houses now stand. The Old Inn closed a few years ago and was converted into a house.
12) WOODFALLS POST OFFICE There has been a shop on this site since about 1900, but the present store and Post Office opened in The first sub-postmaster was Frank Knight. It is now the only local shop. (The Drove leads to Tinney s Firs, which was planted by John Tinney and owned by William Tinney. It is now managed by the Woodland Trust. A footpath also leads to Harthill Drove, where there was a brickworks from the mid 18 th century until 1900) 13) THE AVON CARRIAGE COMPANY Original site of Skylark Motors. In 1926, Frank Shergold & Sons, who were carriers, started a motor bus service to Salisbury on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Later Budden s coach company and workshop operated from here.
14) THE WOODFALLS INN Formerly the Bat and Ball, the present building dates from the early 20 th century, but has been altered and extended. 15) REDLYNCH PLAYING FIELD Site of Chalk s timber yard. The Chalk brothers also had another yard in Vale Road, near the Band Hall.
16) WOODFALLS CROSS SHEDS FOR BUSES Wilts & Dorset Bus Company built 2 sheds to house two buses, a double decker and a single decker, in the 1930s. It is now a private house and wine store. (Return along The Ridge and turn into Vale Road) 17) WOODFALLS BAND HALL The band was formed in 1874 and the Mission Hall was built in 1882 (See date).
18) GREENS MEADE John Green s timber yard and sawmill operated here in the 20 th century, closing in the mid-1970s. You can see the entrance. Weeks timber yard was nearby, on The Ridge (top right corner in the photo). (Continue along Vale Road)
19) CASTLE WOODS (off end of Vale Road) Nearby, in the Vale, was the site of a brickworks, which closed in It had a 100 foot chimney which was demolished in The brickworks here was started prior to 1878.
. (Turn right into Morgan s Vale Road)
20) TOWER HOUSE The Turret Clock dates from 1883 and was made by Edwin Smith. (Morgan s Vale is named after a man called Morgan who was the first to build his cottage at the bottom of the Vale. On old maps it is called Morgan s Bottom. We are not sure which house it was. As you walk through the Vale you will notice many older properties, showing the use of thatch and cob).
21) THE RED HOUSE In the 1900s Mrs Elizabeth Elkins ran a shop here and her husband had a butchery and slaughterhouse.
22) THE EBENEZER CHAPEL The Chapel was built about 1875 by Mr H. Read, but was sold in 1901 to the Primitive Methodists and became the Ebenezer Chapel. It closed in the mid-20 th Century (see date). (As you proceed you will see a track on your left. At the end of it there used to be a village well, which superseded a spring off Orchard Road)
23) VICARAGE PARK Site of another brickworks from just after 1900 to about This brickyard was developed initially by the Atkey family who from the late 1880 s also owned the Kiln Lane brickworks. It was sold in 1950 to Stewart Mitchell. The shorter chimney and kilns were destroyed in Modern houses now stand on the site. The Old Vicarage remains but is a private dwelling. 24) FOREST DANCE STUDIO In the 1930s this was a branch of the Wilton Carpet Factory. It has since been used by companies involved in light industry, including Wort & Sons. Since 2003 it has been a dance studio. This trail may be downloaded for personal use but is not to be used for any commercial purpose. Copyright Redlynch Local History Society 2017
