15 Flying Eagle Program (ages 6 12) This program visits various Green Shack sites each week of the summer at the same time as Green Shack programs. The Flying Eagle program allows children and families to learn about the first peoples of this land and Treaty 6. The Flying Eagle program uses the medicine wheel as a guiding principle. Activities may include storytelling, bead crafts, dream catchers, double ball, lacrosse, bannock making, smudging and talking circles. Incorporating Indigenous teachings into community recreation helps to build a relationship of understanding and respect among the program participants. It also encourages discussions about the history of the land and celebrates the relationship among all Edmontonians today. The Flying Eagle program leader helps create a safe space for these conversations and teachings to be shared. For the 10th year anniversary of Flying Eagle in 14, a story book was created in Cree and English. It is available at edmonton.ca/flyingeagle.
